Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic Emergency medical technicians (EMT’s) and paramedics are the first responders to emergency calls to transport patients to hospitals. People's lives depend on EMTs and paramedics quick arrivance and reaction to emergencies. They respond to a wide range of emergencies, from someone having a stroke to a person hurt in a car accident.They are trained to provide first-line medical or emergency care for sick and injured people at the scene, whether it's at the person home or an accident on the street. EMT’s and paramedics are trained to operate on patients that have suffered from an accident or sickness outside the hospital. They provide the following services when responding to 911 emergency calls for medical care, they perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or bandaging a cut. They provide urgent lifesaving care during life threatening injuries. EMT’s are trained to have skills on how to handle cardiac and respiratory arrest, heart attacks, seizures, strokes, diabetic emergencies and breathing or choking problems and other critical emergencies that occur outside the hospital setting.They have the skills to treat trauma injuries such as wounds, burns, and fractured bones. They perform oxygen control, and take patients vitals. Important qualities EMTs must have, provide emotional support during accidents, interpersonal skills, listening skills, physical strength, problem solving skills to be able to find fast solutions, and speaking skill to give orders to the patients. They provide patients with basic life support to keep them alive until they reach the medical facility.EMTs and paramedics serve anybody in the population from newborn babies to elderly people in any community in the United States. All states have an age requirement of 18 years. All states require EMTs and paramedics to be licensed or certified but some requirements vary by states. All states require that applicants must be trained a minimum of first aid and CPR certification before applying for license. Many fire departments in California require firefighters to be EMT certified. To become an EMT in State of California minimum training requirements hours must be complete total of 160 hours, 136 hours in classrooms, labs and 24 hours clinical. In order to become eligible for certification National Registry of EMTs ‘written and skills exam must be passed. After passing the written exam a background check will be ran on the applicant, then certification may be given by a local EMS agency or public safety agency. Certification is valid for two years then recertification must be complete by completing 24 hours of training. Certification is recognized statewide. Paramedics require more training requirements than EMT’s because it provides more advanced skill care to patients. The minimum number of hours of training is 450 hours in didactic and skills, 160 hours in hospital and clinical training, and 480 hours in field internship a total of 1090 hours.
