The United States placed an embargo on Japan by prohibiting exports of materials essential to them. In September 1940, the United States decided to put a ban on Japan. This ban stopped exports of steel, scrap iron, and aircraft fuel to Japan. The reason for the ban was because Japan got the land North of French Indochina. In April 1941, Japan signed a treaty with the Soviet Union in hopes to stop an attack from them if they were to get into a war with Britain or the United States, while trying to get Southeast Asia. Then, in June 1941, until the end of July Japan had Southern Indochina (Pearl). The U.S., Britain, and the Netherlands then stopped Japan from getting their assets.
