There are a handful of love songs that have been written. One of the most famous love songs written is by the king of rock and roll. Elvis Pressley, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” has been a popular wedding and love song for several decades. Released in 1961, Elvis debuted the song in his movie, Blue Hawaii. Over the years, artists have been recording this hit love song, giving it their own twist. In an article that was printed in the Telegraph, “the devotional words to the song, which featured in Presley's 1961 film Blue Hawaii, describe the mood of love better than any other, according to respondents” (Swaine, 2008). Along with Pressley’s original version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, we can consider studying the covers performed by The …show more content…
Piano Guys and Barry Harry Connick Jr. Elvis Pressley’s original version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, has been around for more than 50 years. It is one of his greatest love songs. The song starts out with a piano and the drums giving the beat. As Elvis comes in, he has a deep, vibrato tone feeling in his voice. The instruments that can be heard in the set of the song include a piano, drums, and a guitar. It has a light, breezy feel to it, as Elvis moves from one verse to the next. The song also has the assistance of backup vocals as the song progresses, giving it the feeling of being a blues song.
As the song begins, wise men say that only fools rush into love, but like the river flows, some things are meant to be. It means that only suckers rush into love, but just like the river flowing, it is meant to be. Falling in love is something that cannot be helped. It just happens. He goes on to singing, take my hand, take my whole life too. This means to take my hand, and spend the rest of your life with me. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” has a strong impact for the audience. Though the lyrics are short and repeat, it gives the listener the impression that love can come fast, and stay a lifetime. It gives you the sense that true love and forever after still exist. The melody of the song is just a short verse, but repeats several times throughout the song. As Elvis sings this song, he brings out the emotions that grab the attention of the listeners. The tone and rhythm of his voice serenade the listeners. People tend to think that Elvis Pressley performed the best version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Though he was the original performer of the song, many artists have made a cover of the song. The Piano Guys definitely took on a whole new spin with the
song. Their version is entirely different than any other that has been performed. The Piano Guys perform the song strictly with a piano. There is no singing or any other instruments used in the performance. The actual person that performs the song is Jon Schmidt, a pianist for The Piano Guys. The song was published on March 16, 2012, after Schmidt fell in love with a version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” performed by UB40, one of his favorite bands. He took their version and put a Beethoven twist on it, giving it a classical feel of music for which he was raised on (The Piano Guys). His reinterpretation of the song gives the listener a different feel. Several things are comparably different which include the tempo of the song and the instrumentation. Although Mr. Pressley used a variety of instruments in his performance, Mr. Schmidt’s full length version is completed entirely on the piano. He played different chords to lead the melody and chorus. It gave the impression that there could be more than one piano was being played. In addition to the instrument being different, the tempo was obviously distinct compared to the original. The temp began at a moderate pace at roughly 140 beats per minute (bmp).Around thirty seconds in to the song; the tempo picks up. The notes began moving at a faster pace, going an estimated 160 bmp. For most of the song, the pace continues pretty constant. The notes are being played in a staccato manner, giving off an articulated sound. Roughly two minutes and forty-two seconds into the performance, the tempo dramatically slows down, almost coming to a halt. Making it sound like the song is coming to a conclusion as Mr. Schmidt draws the notes out. At that instant, at three minutes and eighteen seconds, the tempo shifts back to the moderate pace that was being performed in the beginning of the song. Although the tempo speeds back up toward the end of the song, Mr. Schmidt winds down by playing different chords and keys until the song comes to a complete stop. Harry Connick Jr. released his performance of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” on September 9, 2009, on his Your Song album. The total performance by Mr. Connick adds a new feel to the music. His version has a jazz mood as it plays. The instruments that are being used to assemble the sound for his track is the drums, guitar, piano, and a strong use of a trumpet. The trumpet is used at one point in the song to play the melody, rather than having Mr. Connick sing it. The overall vibe of the song is similar to the performance that was perfected by Mr. Pressley himself. The motion of the song has a constant tempo. The tempo is performed at roughly 90 bpm, more of a lagging feel than the version performed by The Piano guys. The actual Elvis Pressley performance is more heavy and slower than both of the others. Harry Connick Jr. reinterpreted the song from Mr. Pressley. The changes involved the style of music that he performed. The original version was considered to be a rock genre, while Mr. Connick Jr. went toward a more Jazz genre while keeping the sound of the vocals equivalent. Mr. Connick Jr. performed his lyrics more legato instead vibrato, like the original. He also makes sure that his words are more pronounced and understandable. The vocals in his song are clear and coherent. Harry Connick Jr. shaped his cover of the song, adding his own distinct feel to it while keeping a semblance to the initial version. The variation in instruments and vocals make it distinct enough to keep it from sounding like the original.

Presley grew up in an era where racism was strong; his music brought all races together. His music had Caucasians singing black R&B despite the racism. Teenage girls all over the world would go hysterical over Elvis and his crude moves. Elvis received one of his nicknames “Elvis the Pelvis” with his sexual moves that could not be recorded on television. 1955 and 1956 was when Presley exploded in his musical careers with his single “Heartbreak Hotel” which sold over one million copies. As I listened to this single that sold so many copies I can hear the different genres and the way his voice was so different compared to other artist in this era. The main instrument being played in this single is a guitar. There is actually a hotel named after Elvis’s first hit single. It is located in Memphis, Tennessee. Unfortunately, the hit song was inspired behind a suicide note that one of Pre...
The article “ In Defense of “Trap Queen” as our generation’s Greatest Love Song” by Hanif Abdurraqib, who is a poet, essayist, and cultural critic from Columbus, Ohio, writes about todays modern “love song’s” and their meanings. Hanif believes that todays modern generation love songs are not the same as they once were, because the meaning of love has evolved over time. Love songs have a different kind of passion then the once did, they have evolved the passion of love towards each other to a whole different level of passion. The meaning of a love song has changed its not all about only love towards someone, its changed to the love for the life style they live with the success they 've made to be where they are. This life style involving money, drugs. and sex, which is very blunt about how they describe it, is what “love” is to them and the young crowd
Loss. Grief. Mourning. Anger. Disbelief. Emotions are in abundance when a loved one passes away. People need to find a way to cope with the situations and often need to express themselves by writing their feelings down in order to get them out. This is exactly what Paul Monette does in his book of poetry title “Love Alone” in remembrance of his companion Rog. Through writing his poetry Monette describes his emotions and the events that occurred during Rog’s battle with AIDS. By Monette’s transitioning through different emotions, the reader begins to understand the pain the author is dealt. Touching upon Kubler-Ross’ five stages of death including denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, Monette transitions to Rog’s decline in health. Using different fonts and no punctuation, the lines are interpreted by the reader using instincts to know when to begin and end a sentence. Evident in the poems “The Very Same”, “The Half-life”, and “Current Status”, Monette gives a description of loss that makes the reader tingle.

“My love, she keeps me warm.” Without context, these song lyrics have no impact or power behind them. However, if told that these words were sung by a female vocalist, and preceded by the lyrics “I can’t change, even if it tried, even if I wanted to,” suddenly the words have meaning as a woman sings of her love for another woman (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). These lyrics come from the 2012 song “Same Love” by Macklemore with Ryan Lewis and featuring Mary Lambert. In the song “Same Love,” Macklemore raises his voice against the issues of discrimination, gay rights, and marriage equality that we see in today's era. He uses two fallacies in the song, but Macklemore’s use of the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos in his song “Same Love,” have a great level of success in proving the importance of gay rights and marriage equality.

His song, “I Walk the Line”, is a good first example of the nature of love. There are two interpretations of this song, one marital and the other spiritual, but for this argument the marital interpretation will be used. This was Cash’s first number one Billboard hit which he recorded in 1956 (“I Walk The Line”). This song was inspired by Johnny’s wife Vivian, and is about how their love will stay strong and how he will stay faithful through his rise to stardom (Beck). He opens the song with “I keep a close watch on this heart of mine; I keep my eyes wide open all the time” (Beck). Before his career even took off, Cash had to prove his love for his wife. Simply being married to her for years and raising your children was not enough prove it. This song also shows the twisted hold that love can have on your heart, visible in the lyrics, “You've got a way to keep me on your side; you give me cause for love that I can't hide”. Here, Cash tells us that he is blinded by love and that he has no option other than following his love for his wife. Ironically, this turns out not to be true. Cash’s marriage ended up falling through as he fell in love with his singing partner, June Carter. So, “I Walk the Line” tells us that love is binding, powerful, and cannot be
Through his music lyrically he explained two things between dance and music he said: “Rock ‘n’ Roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can’t help but move to it.” (needs citation) Therefore, when he performed songs like “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You)” he changed the rhythm and melody to an up tempo, the lyrics talk about him losing a woman and he then starts crying over her. Unlike “Tutti Frutti” which was originated by “Little Richard,” he is singing about two different women he is having a hard time figuring out why they drive him crazy the song can be taken as sexual or depending on the thoughts of the listener. So, when he performed this new sounds Country combined with the Rhythm and Blues that was exhilarating to his mixed audience. He was not only telling a story through his new founded discoveries of music he had a distinct voice, style, and deliverance like the African American artists in the 1940’s and 50’s Elvis helped the music in 1954 give rise to this new genre Rock and
On the surface, ?The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock? is about an older man who is distressed by his own inability to tell a woman of his desire for her. He tries to relay his feelings to her but comes up with all kinds of excuses not to, and ultimately does not. The speakers? real problem is not that he is just too timid to confess his love for this particular woman, it is that he has a somewhat unproductive, bleak life and has a lack of willpower and boldness to change that life.
One of the earliest controversies involving an artist’s actions and songs in in the music world came on June 5, 1956 when rock and roll legend Elvis Presley performed a rendition of his song “Hound Dog” that had the public outraged. He received backlash for his pelvis-shaking intensity his fans screamed for while television critics described it as “appalling ...
Love has many definitions and can be interpreted in many different ways. William Maxwell demonstrates this in his story “Love”. Maxwell opens up his story with a positive outlook on “Love” by saying, “Miss Vera Brown, she wrote on the blackboard, letter by letter in flawlessly oval palmer method. Our teacher for fifth grade. The name might as well have been graven in stone” (1). By the end of the story, the students “love” for their teachers no longer has a positive meaning, because of a turn in events that leads to a tragic ending. One could claim that throughout the story, Maxwell uses short descriptive sentences with added details that foreshadow the tragic ending.
“Same Love” is a title of a song by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert. Ryan Lewis and Macklemore are classified as a hip-hop duo. Ryan Lewis and Macklemore send the message that individuals in homosexual relationships cannot control how they feel, and can therefore not change. Homosexuality is still a problematic issue because different groups in the society feel different about it. In the lyrics, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis lament about the judgment placed against people who are gay (Josephs, 1). The individuals are looked down upon and criticized for choosing a type of sexuality that is different from the norm. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis feel that there is too much pressure on gay people to be “straight” yet the same individuals that judge them preach that God is fair and preaches that everyone should be loved. Individuals should be loved regardless of their sins, but the “right-wing conservatives” strongly advocate against gay people and homosexuality. Mary Lambert joins in and furthers the message that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis communicate that she cannot live her love. According to Mary Lambert, her parents disapprove of the same-sex relationship that she has with her girlfriend, but she keeps her warm (her girlfriend).
