Successful female performers can have a lot of similarities and a lot of differences. For instance, Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey have a lot of differences. Both women live in the United States; however, Ellen resides on the west coast, while Oprah is established in the northeast. Ellen enjoys exercising and art. Meanwhile, Oprah enjoys fine furs and designer clothing. Ellen is lean; Oprah is plump. Despite their differences, these two women have similarities in family circumstances, minority challenges, and career paths. To begin, Ellen and Oprah had similar childhoods. They are both women who were born in the southern United States in the 1950's, came from single parent homes, and attended college. According to Current Biography Yearbook, Ellen was born in Metairie, Louisiana on January 26, 1958, to Elliott and Betty DeGeneres. She attended many public schools in New Orleans until her parents divorced and she moved to Atlanta, Texas with her newly remarried mother. After Ellen graduated from high school, she moved back to New Orleans and attended college for half of a semester at the University of New Orleans with a concentration in speech and communication (Graham 97-100). Like Ellen, Oprah is also from the South. Oprah was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on …show more content…
Both women started out with small supporting roles on television, secured their own television shows, and wrote books. Ellen appeared on the Tonight Show and on various television programs until she obtained her own show, These Friends of Mine, which was later renamed just Ellen in 1994 (Graham 97-100). She has written a variety of books containing her memoirs, humor, and hobbies. Likewise, Oprah appeared on television, not as a Tonight Show guest, but as a co-anchor and reporter for two news stations, WTVF-TV and WJZ-TV. She later co-hosted the morning talk show People Are Talking and anchored A.M. Chicago, which was later
Ophelia & Nala are both similar but very different. They are both in love with a prince. They are the main attraction of the two prince’s in the different scenes. They are both innocent and did not know anything of the kings Mufasa and Hamlet’s death. They are different because Ophelia makes Hamlet angry and crazy. Nala makes Simba be a man and become more responsible which makes them different emotionally for Hamlet & Simba. Ophelia is helpless and Nala is tough. Ophelia dies in Hamlet and Nala doesn’t die. Nala was the only child and Ophelia had a brother. Ophelia's dad Polonius was apart of the story, Nala’s father was not.
There is much similarity between Gertrude and Ophelia in the play. Both are attractive and simple minded, and are easily shaped by opinion, desires and ideas of others. Ophelia and Gertrude seem to be the same women at different stages in their lives. This may be one of the reasons why Hamlet was first attracted to Ophelia and now the reason why Hamlet rejects Ophelia.
In Hamlet and The Little Mermaid, the characters Ophelia and Ariel can relate the most. They have the same circumstances in each book/ movie. With Ariel living under the sea and being a mermaid to Ophelia living in the same castle as hamlet just as a fathers daughter.
Oprah Winfrey is as American entrepreneur and a popular talk show host. She was born on January 29 1954 in Kosciusko Mississippi. She was the result of a broken teenage relationship and teenage pregnancy so as you can imagine it had quite an impact on her development as she grew up. Against all odds she became a very successful woman and is currently worth 2.8 billion USD.
Oprah’s childhood was not the greatest. Her unmarried parents split up, and she grew up on a farm with her grandmother. She developed rapidly and could read before she was three. Also, she was tested out of kindergarten and second grade, thus only taking first grade and skipping to third grade. When she turned six, she started to live with her mother and was very lonely. However, she began her speaking profession around that time. “She was invited to recite poetry at black social clubs and church teas, where she became known as ‘the little speaker.’ At 12, during a visit to her father in Nashville, she earned $500 for a speech she delivered at a church” (“Winfrey, Oprah”). As you can tell, Oprah started young in her profession and was determined to make a living off of this since her prior experiences.
Despite being successful women, Oprah and Ellen were not always as well known as they are today. Oprah Winfrey grew up in Milwaukee, Mississippi, whereas Ellen DeGeneres was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. At a young age, Winfrey was sexually abused by various men. She eventually escaped the toxic environment she was exposed to when she went to live with her father. When Ellen was younger, her family moved around quite a bit and she learned to use comedy as a way to fit in with the new peers she encountered. When she was a teenager, her parents got a divorce; she used
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi living with a poor Baptist family (Wikipedia). Her parents, Vernon Winfrey and Vernita Lee were unmarried and still teenagers during the time she was born (Wikipedia). She lived with her grandmother where she would learn how to read aloud and recite sermons by the young age of 3 (America's Beloved Best Friend). At the age of 13 she would move to Milwaukee with her mother and that's when the trouble would start (America's Beloved Best Friend). She would face sexual abuse and molestation from her family relatives as a teenager, by her cousin, family friends, and her uncle (Victoria Walker). Oprah would keep this a secret and would bottle up her anger, which lead to trouble (Victoria Walker). She would repeatedly run away from home and was sent to juvenile detention, but her admission would be denied because the detention's overcrowded area (America's Beloved Best Friend). At the age of 14 she was impregnated by one of her abusers, but the baby would become stillborn, and this would devastate Oprah (Victoria Walker). Her mother would send her to live with her father as a last resort. She vowed to change her life (Victoria Walker).
She is very dependent on everyone else and has the mind of a child. The fact that both these characters are very different physically and mentally doesn't change that they are both women. It is because they are women that makes them less of a person in both films. Sugar Cane because she is a replica of the stereotypical image of a dumb . blonde', and Ellen Ripley because of the fact
Oprah Winfrey lived a very rough early life until Vernon Winfrey took her into good hands. She lived in Kosciusko, Missippi for the first 6 years of her life, and then she moved to Milwaukee to live with her mother who was a housemaid. When Oprah lived with her mother she was sexually molested during the daytime when her mother would work the long days. This abuse went on everyday possible for 4 years until she was out on her own at age 14. Oprah had given birth to a baby, which had unexpectedly died during infancy. After the baby had died she moved in with her Father who lived in Tennessee. “Vernon Winfrey was a strict parent, but he gave his daughter the secure home that Oprah needed. He saw to it that she met a curfew, and he required her to read a book and write a book report as well. “As strict s he was,” says Oprah, “ he had some concerns about me making the best of my ...
In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore, where she hosted a hit television cat show, People Are Talking. Afterwards, she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show. She later became the host of her own, widely popular program, The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired for twenty-five seasons, from 1986 to 2011. That same year, Winfrey launched her own TV network, the Oprah Winfrey Network
Oprah was born on a farm in 1954 to a poor family. Winfrey enjoyed reciting African American poetry, and became known as the "little speaker" in her town. When she was 12, Winfrey won $500 for a speech she gave at her father 's church. From then on she wanted to "be paid to talk." When Winfrey was a teenager, her dream was put on hold. Some of the trusted men of her family began to sexually abuse her. She lashed out in anger at the world by lying to her mother, running away from home, and stealing. Unaware of what Winfrey was going through, her mother sent her away to live with her father. If her mother never sent her away, Oprah 's life would have been much different. At age 17, Oprah Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant and was offered an on-air job at WVOL, a radio station for the African American community in Nashville. Oprah continued to work at WVOL in her first years of college, but her broadcasting career was already taking off. She left school and signed on with a local television station as a reporter and anchor. In 1976, she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV News as a co-anchor. There, she co-hosted her first talk show, People Are Talking, while continuing to serve as anchor and news reporter. In January 1984, she was invited to Chicago to host a half-hour morning program on WLS-TV. In less than a year, she turned AM Chicago into the hottest show in

Winfrey used almost every communication style throughout her career, but there is one that I want to go in-depth on, which is assertive communication. Oprah Winfrey is so successful because she expresses how she feels without demanding an answer. Celebrities and other guest are so comfortable speaking with her because she’s so down to earth and she really listens to what you have to say. Oprah knows how uncover what someone is going through without coming off too strong, and that’s what people want. Assertive communication is how you get the job done, and Oprah is phenomenal at using this particular communication style. An example of her using this style brings back to the interview with Michael Jackson. There was so much that everyone wanted to ask Michael but he felt comfortable speaking with Oprah because she didn’t come off too strong or that she wanted his information for personal gain(whether that was the case or not). She asked Michael questions that the world wanted to know, but she also paid attention and cared about what came out of his mouth. Mrs. Winfrey’s assertive communication method is impeccable. This style encouraged and led others to believe that they could follow in her footsteps and become a substantial interviewer/media personnel like
