Kaye Gibbons, the author of the novel Ellen Foster, believes that a quote from the Emerson’s “Self Reliance” is connected with Ellen’s struggle to survive and find her way in the world. The first line of this quote says, “Cast the bantling on the rocks” is related to Ellen herself. A bantling is an abandoned child. Ellen is a bantling even though she was not abandoned, she was deprived of a normal childhood. Her life as a child was extremely hard, physically and emotionally. She never had a mother or father take care of her through her entire youth. You could say that her childhood was “cast on the rocks”. The last line reads, “Power and speed be hands and feet”. This reminds me of how Ellen ran from her problems at home and stayed away from her house as much as possible. The line also represents strength and Ellen was a strong person. She dealt with losing a mother, father and grandmother within one year. She never even had a good relationship with her father or grandmother. The short inscription to “Self Reliance” is almost a short summary of Ellen’s character. In it, a child without parents is raised by someone that is a lot different than she is. After Ellen’s mother died, she is unwillingly left with her alcoholic father who mistreats her. Ellen spent a lot of time at her friend, Starletta’s house and at the house of her grandmother. Life with her grandmother was no better than life with her father. She did not want to be in either situation. After living with her grandmother, Ellen’s struggle to find a suitable, comforting home comes to an end. For the second time in her life, a family member has died right next to her, basically in her arms. Ellen is able to overcome this, even as a

“In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit….” This short monologue is the opening for Dick Wolf’s fictional television show, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. This show follows the detectives of the Sixteenth Precinct in Manhattan, New York City through their lives and the cases they work day after day. In this unit, it is Detective Olivia Benson who has inspired me with her dedication and strength to her job and the real life connections that have been created from this character.
Ella Josephine Baker was born in Virginia, and at the age of seven Ella Baker moved with her family to Littleton, South Carolina, where they settled on her grandparent's farmland her grandparents had worked as slaves. Ella Baker's early life was steeped in Southern black culture. Her most vivid childhood memories were of the strong traditions of self-help, mutual cooperation, and sharing of economic resources that encompassed her entire community. Because there was no local secondary school, in 1918, when Ella was fifteen years old, her parents sent her to Shaw boarding school in Raleigh, the high school academy of Shaw University. Ella excelled academically at Shaw, graduating as valedictorian of her college class from Shaw University in Raleigh in 1927.
The poet explores this notion in the poem ‘Kornilia’, when written Kornilia the other of Peter is reluctant to the change that Is occurring as her son adapts to the western culture. Kornilia questions herself as to where she went wrong with Peter “Where did I go wrong?” the tone and imagery in this is reluctance and regret towards her son and the overall cultural displacement. This influences the mindset that change is a given. This poem portrays change as a device that influences our thinking, that change at times is undesired. Over time within the poem it is a clear image of unwillingness to adjust to the change she is now forced to face which in hindsight is a positive progression for the family, Kornilia has not progressed she begins to be withdrawn from her “new world” and stilling longing for the old. To further highlight the uncertainty of change the use of metaphors helped convey the concept “Her feet make no imprint” Kornilia stayed constant she was at a halt, she didn’t change she refused it. The change in her life wasn’t only altering her lifestyle but was changing her only son
Ellen Gates Starr, who was born in Illinois in 1859, enrolled in Rockford Female Seminary. Here, she met what would be a long-time friend, Jane Addams. Together, they founded a mansion in the city of Chicago. After fixing it up, the Hull House was formed. This became the first settlement house in Chicago and in the United States, officially opening in 1889. This mansion was surrounded by the slums of Chicago. They felt no need to move it to another part of the city, but where it would feel more welcoming to the female immigrants and their children. The reason for opening the mansion was to give women a place to stay. Starr felt that the slums obviously weren't sufficient enough.
Jackson surrounds himself with people that are like him. Rose of Sharon and Junior both have rough stories, and so does Jackson. However, the bar scene is where the author really gives the reader a look into the intellect of Jackson. “Indians like to belong, so we all pretend to be cousins” indicates that it is not fear that separates whites from skins, but merely that they are more comfortable with people with the same skin color. Belonging is a vital human sense, woven into a person’s DNA. Therefore, since Jackson yearns to belong again after being left by his friends, he does something to make sure that he is seen as part of the family. He buys five shots for every person in the bar. This act seems to qualify him to be part of a new clan. It does not take long for him to make new friends, as others seem to feel the same way. This seems to be similar in Alexie’s poem. Although the Indian Killer is someone the cook has never met, he still feels a bond with him, even going to the extreme of tasting his food with the same utensils the convict will use. It seems strange that the cook is willing to go to such lengths to ensure that some part of him will remain with the Indian Killer, but it becomes obvious that he simply does this to belong—to be a part of the Indian Killer, just like a family member. Although in returning to Jackson’s story, one notices that the other Indians are willing to
Green roof can protect the roofing membrane against ultra-violet (UV) radiation and prevent physical damage due to degeneration of insulation and roofing materials. It can block solar radiations and decrease daily temperature fluctuations during summer and winter. All of these benefits make the roof lifetime longer [19].
Ralph Waldo Emerson believes he writes quite the persuading argument in 'Self-Reliance.' Wielding his pen as if it were Excalibur, he vies to stimulate and challenge the down-trodden mind in his classic work on the American Spirit. His lines are affecting, romantic, and hypnotic, especially at the first reading; his thoughts on the page beget inspiration for the reader. 'Self-Reliance' has its value in its boldness, its construction, and mature attitudes toward consistency and failure. In addition, Emerson's confident logic seems impregnable. At a second glance, however, it becomes apparent that this logic bases itself on a flawed philosophy which does injustice to the value of society. To Emerson, not only is self-doubt absolutely out of the question, but it is a virtue to believe that everyone believes as you do. He writes that there is no value in life but personal principles and goals, and that society is irrelevant. Readers are often charmed and disarmed by his brave, fresh attitude; it may take a few readings to break through this wall of seemingly godly wisdom in 'Self-Reliance.' The glittery facade, however, eventually fades. With time, it becomes clear that Emerson precisely constructs and calculates the wording and paragraphs of his essay to appeal to readers' emotions rather than their reason.
Despite major and exciting medical advances – spurring an overall survival rate of 10 percent just fifty years ago to nearly 90 percent today, for many rare forms of childhood cancers, the survival rate is much lower.

“There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance”. This part proves to the audience the greatness of being a humble individual and the envy that we have about other people, can no longer remain with us when becoming adults. It is important to be respectful and mature and overall being a polite human being. Ralph Waldo Emerson insists that society does not want the individual to have strength; it wants he or she to be dependent. I think that society’s desire of an individual to not have strength should only push the individual to improve himself and develop toughness and durability. It is very important that an individual is independent because this makes the individual hard worker and successful person. The essay by Emerson proves that self independent mentalities should be considered by individuals of society, and that being yourself is
Studies show that one in five kids who are diagnosed with cancer will die. This horrifying disease is the second cause of death in children and infants. Pediatric Cancer can not only affect the child who is going through various tests and therapy, but also the supporting family who watched their son or daughter grow. Millions of money is donated every year, but yet there still will be, in 2015, more than 10,000 reported cases of children under 15. Out of those 16,000, more than 1,000 are expected to die (Cancer Facts and Statistics). This statistic is horrible, and maybe if more money were funded, then those children will live. Pediatric Cancer is severely underfunded and overlooked, especially in the United
My answer to case study question is “Yes, they are”. There are proofs showing that petrol (gasoline) cars are more powerful compared to diesel cars. The main difference between diesel cars and petrol cars is the ignition. Petrol engines use spark ignition whereas diesel engines utilize compression ignition. This gives petrol cars a faster, more powerful start and higher BHP(brake horse power), which means higher KW. Chris Rosamond, an author from Auto Express, a weekly motoring magazine in the United Kingdom stated that diesel engine power band was usually relatively narrow when compared to a petrol engine(Chris, 2017). However, Chris was not the first one who said that. Daniel L. Hittler, A.M.C’s director of power-plant engineering
This piece of the text shows that society stresses too much about fitting in and other people's opinion about them when they should focus on what they doing in the moment and what they are need to do in the future. He also says that if you can forget what other people think about you you can strive for greatness. I completely agree with what Emerson said because you see it in everyone around you just by looking through the hallways you can see that people want to have their Jordan shoes and their nike socks because if it’s not the top company then it's not considered cool. This excerpt out of Self Reliance proves how this piece shows who we try to be as people and it shows what I try to fit. Ralph Emerson’s piece Self Reliance really shows what is wrong with society and we we need to change. In middle school I wanted Nike
