The book, Ella Minnow Pea is focused a girl named Ella, and describes events happening on an island a small ways off the coast. The name of the island, Nollop, is derived from a man, named Nevin Nollop, who is the ruler and founder of the island thus explaining why the island was named. Nevin, now deceased, created the pangram, “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” In honor of their leader, a statue was built, containing the pangram, that Nevin created, which unwittingly, created a domino of disastrous events that almost destroyed the island. But that’s enough of the backstory, let's get into the real meat of what we're talking about here. The story is written in the form of letters. Characters communicating back & forth through
this format. Ella, who is one the main characters of the story, the other being her cousin Tassie, receives a letter from the council, along with the rest of the town, Telling them that they are removing a letter from the alphabet *pause for effect* permanently. Why? Well going back to the statue with the pangram written on it we find that one of the letters has fallen off. The government takes the as a sign that Nevin Nollop, is communicating with them from the grave, telling them that they need to stop using that one specific letter. No big deal right? Well, actually, it is. Ella then wrote a letter to Tassie, explaining how she not only didn’t mind the change, but actually accepted it as a challenge showing that she would rather avoid conflict. Tassie however, is a fighter and a rebel. She tells Ella how she really feels about what is becoming to be. Within a few days the first offences are committed, and people begin to turn on each other. If the letter is spoken, the authorities are alerted. The first person to be banished is a young boy who committed his third and final offence is banished. Ella, starting to doubt and even despise the law ever being passed becomes afraid. Then, another person purposely commits his third offence to escape the madness. Tassie becoming very angry tells Ella, “A rage burns deep within me, dear Ella, the likes of which I have never felt before.” An uprising starts, slowly and quietly. Another letter is banned. And Ella’s mother who as a school teacher commits her first offence. She is shamed by her colleagues and by her students who now no longer have respect for her.
The novel, Birdie by Tracey Lindberg, has a variety of characters with both attractive and unattractive characteristics. If I had to be friends with one character, I would probably choose Lola. First, she is a strong and independent woman. She is all by herself but she is able to run her own restaurant. At the beginning of the novel, when Bernice is looking for employment, she comes across a sign. It is described as, “... a Help Wanted sign in an immaculate-looking window with precise letters that read ‘Lola’s Little Slice of Heaven’ ” (Lindberg 8). The restaurant was owned by Lola. She is capable of running her own restaurant successfully. It is nice to have a friend who can support herself and doesn’t need to rely on anyone else, especially
We are told of Phoenix?s journey into the woods on a cold December morning. Although we are know that she is traveling through woodland, the author refrains from telling us the reason for this journey. In the midst of Phoenix?s travels, Eudora Welty describes the scene: ?Deep, deep the road went down between the high green-colored banks. Overhead the live-oaks met, and it was as dark as a cave? (Welty 55). The gloomy darkness that the author has created to surround Phoenix in this scene is quite a contrast to the small Negro woman?s positive outlook; Phoenix is a very determined person who is full of life. As Phoenix begins to walk down the dark path, a black dog approaches her from a patch of weeds near a ditch. As he comes toward her, Phoenix is startled and compelled to defend herself: ?she only hit him a little with her cane. Over she went in the ditch, like a little puff of milk-weed? (55). Here, the author contrasts the main character?s strong will with her small, frail phys...
Likewise, even though the book was not as solemn as the current events in today’s society, discrimination is still brought upon between characters. As the characters were put the blame on, hatred was brought to them causing an arousal of fear. Many characters were innocent; although, that did not stop other people in the book to make the innocent look guilty. An example being, the author composed, “I never kept no poppets, not since I were a girl” (Miller 69). This statement was spoken by Elizabeth Procter as she discovered the allegation. There was a young character in the book, Abigail Williams, and she blamed Elizabeth Proctor for playing with poppets. Poppets are dolls that individuals in the late ages had used to cast a spell on a certain

Storytelling can be found in every corner of the world. It is used to pass the time, tell of past or current events, and is the way that we communicate with each other. In Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie, storytelling occurs during times of hopelessness when life seems hard and allows the characters to live vicariously through the tales told. The narrator and Luo use storytelling as an escape from reality in times of desperation. The tailor is influenced by the stories to the point where he changes the style of clothing he creates to escape the boundaries of Mao approved clothing. The importance of storytelling to the little seamstress is that she learns the importance of beauty, and is able to leave the current life she lives. Throughout the novel the characters use storytelling to escape the reality of life in either a mental or physical way.
is a true story. The reader is left at the end of the book to draw their own
The impact of Jack’s savagery on the island leads to the boys forgetting the real truth about about themselves. The boys on the island are able to explain that human are evil from the beginning and that they aren’t impacted by society. The boys see the island as a place where they are free from the adult world and without any rules. The boys don’t realize that a world without rules causes the chaos on the island and the savagery within the boys. Jack’s authoritative power forces him to push the rest of the boys out of their comfort zone by making them evil being that was not there true identity before. Upon realizing that the savagery they had obtained was only destroying themselves they “wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart”(202). The power that was developed by Jack impacts everyone and destroys all of the lives that rejected him. Piggy who was the most knowledgeable character and also the weakest character was often disrespected by Jack because he opposed Jack’s power and recognizes that his power not voted for. As as result, Piggy is killed by Jack’s own boys because they too have been impacted by brute force. They killed piggy just like how they hunted pigs. Next, Simon's death reflects the rejections of religion and the idea that the
Throughout the book the characters experienced personal growth; they learned something that changes how they look at life. In this essay I picked a character that I feel experienced the most growth and change and discuss what caused this change to happen and what they were like before the change occurred.
When the boys arrive at the island after a plane crash, they are forced to find a way to keep everything in order and under control. “At first they delight in their freedom and in their pleasure of the island”( Saidi, Hasan1). Then the boys begin to explore, Ralph and Piggy find a conch shell on the beach. When Ralph and Piggy first see the shell Piggy says "S'right. It's a shell! I seen one like that before. On someone's back wall. A conch he called it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It's ever so valuable--" (Golding15). They use this shell as a symbol of how fragile order and democracy is. The sound from the shell gathers all the boys together after the plane crash. The plane crash seperated them in th...
A narrative is specified to amuse, to attract, and grasp a reader’s attention. The types of narratives are fictitious, real or unification or both. However, they may consist of folk tale stories, mysteries, science fiction; romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, and personal experience (“Narrative,” 2008). Therefore, narrative text has five shared elements. These are setting, characters, plot, theme, and vocabulary (“Narrative and Informational Text,” 2008). Narrative literature is originally written to communicate a story. Therefore, narrative literature that is written in an excellent way will have conflicts and can discuss shared aspects of human occurrence.
In the Lord of the Flies the boys where in a plane and the boys got shot down and ended up on the island. Piggy and ralph found a shell and blew into in to gather the boys together and they only way you were allowed to talk is if you had the shell. Ralph was the boy’s leader. They figured out there were pigs on the island that they could hunt. The found a bestie on the island and some of the boys do not believe it. Ralph said they need to keep a fire to get rescued. A six-letter word that no individual wants to hear; a six-letter word that has the audacity to take away, change, and mold not only an individual but everyone around that individual. In the book One True Thing, by Anna Quindeln Kate a wife and mother of three becomes diagnosed with cancer. Ellen, Kate’s only daughter drops everything and moves back home to take care of her mom. Through this paper I am going to discuss the relationship between Ellen and her mother as well as the concept of social support. Specifically, the coping mechanisms Ellen and Kate use throughout Kate’s diagnosis. Next, I will analyze the concept of control and how it plays an important role in Ellen and Kate’s relationship. Finally, I will examine how the term normalcy
Ellen Toliver changed from the beginning of the novel to the end of the novel in three ways. The first way Ellen Toliver changed in the story was going outside her comfort zone. An example of this claim is on page 16 when Ellen states “ It would be good to stay in the safe warm kitchen and never go out. Ellen overcame the obstacle by going on the mission to deliver the bread to Mr. Shannon that would end up going to General Washington. In the book, it states the Ellen overcame her obstacle of staying inside her comfort zone when Ellen’s mother shouts “ I’m proud of you Ellen.” But, I hope you will never do this again.” That shows that Ellen went out her comfort zone because her mother really was proud of her that she even took a step out her
