Elizabeth Blackwell
Elizabeth Blackwell was a great woman. She was the first woman to receive a Medical degree in America. She opened an Infirmary for women and children in New York.Elizabeth Blackwell was born on February 3 1821 in Bristol, England. But was raised differently then most children at this time. See women were treated differently than men. Women were given little education and were not allowed to hold important positions. They were not allowed to be doctors, bankers, or lawyers, and all the money they made had to go to the men in the family. Since women couldn't become Doctors their were few around. Many women would lose their babies because there was no medicine around. This happened to Elizabeth's mom. Her parents wanted a big family but almost every time her mom gave birth she would lose the baby. This made made Elizabeth sad. Elizabeth was determined that when she grew up she would become a doctor, so that she could help babies and children to stay healthy. She was going to study and work hard to reach her goal.
Elizabeth studied very hard. She read every book in her house and was the teacher's best pupil. She never got bored of learning or trying new things; and years later she became a medical student. All the young men teased her in her class, but she learned to deal with it.
For a long time the Blackwell's ran a sugar business. It was very successful, until one day the business started to loose money and they had to...
Before Elizabeth Cady Stanton had any impact and attempts to start speeches like her “the solitude to self” speech or her speeches at Seneca Falls. Most women were treated as a cook and a maid, they stayed home to take care of the children. They were to be bossed around by their husband. It was actually better off if a woman was single or widowed. Also, all women were not allowed to vote. Women had a say in typically nothing that is until Elizabeth finally took a stand.
The tutor immediately understood that the only way he could educate and keep her attention was to amuse her. He shortened their lessons and only gave her just enough to help her commit to memory the habits and the histories of the families she would be meeting to hopefully give her an edge and seem more appealing to her suitor. I was very enthralled by the wedding and marriage between Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI.
Victor and his monster share many similarities, which isn't very surprising. The apple never falls far from the tree. Both creature and creator tend to use nature as a place to vent anger or despair, or as a place to rest their minds. For example, Victor often goes out on lakes to calm himself, and comes back in a much better mood than before. “But the fresh air and bright sun seldom failed to restore me to some degree of composure, and on my return I met the salutations of my friends with a readier smile and a more cheerful heart.” (M. Shelley,pg. 154.) He also seems to enjoy yelling at Nature and asking why it's so cruel to him. Though Nature usually responds by sending him his monster or some horrible storm, he finds this a source of solace. As for the monster, after he was shunned by De Lacey and his family, he went into the woods and ripped up whole bunch of trees. When he was first made, he learned how to create fire and find food. Later, after being shot by a frightened passerby, the monster stayed hidden in the woods for a while, nursing his wound. Also, both Victor and the monster are scientifically connected to nature in some way. Victor used and twisted nature to try to recreate life. He studied anatomy and the cycle of life intensely. The monster is the result of the same sick scientific
(2014) experimentally measured the changes in the honey bee colony performance and fitness due to chronic sub lethal neonicotinoids, thiamethoxam and clothianidin, exposure through diet. The study consisted of 24 honey bee colonies with two different sister-queens from different breeding populations, one from Germany (A. m. carnica) and another from Switzerland (A. m. mellifera). The bees were fed pollen with concentration of 5.0 ppb thiamethoxam and 2.0 ppb clothianidin (Sandrock et al., 2014). The results of the study were such that: there was a decline in the total population of adult bees by 28%, brood by 13%, decline in total production of honey by 29% and total amount of pollen collected by 19%, over two brood cycles of 1.5 months The honey bee colonies were able to recover and successfully survive in the winter of 3.5 months. However, over the one year period, the colony growth declined significantly due to increased queen supersedure and decreased swarming during the next spring (Sandrock et al., 2014). Overall, A. m. mellifera were more vulnerable to the exposure than A. m. carnica. These different results were most likely due to different honey bee ecotypes and differences in their genetics (Sandrock et al., 2014). Therefore, the study suggests that neonicotinoids have negative effects on the honey bee colony performance due to sub lethal
He was a kind creature who longed for acceptance and love from others. Sadly, society only saw him as a wretched being who should be cast aside. The monster, in order to implement his revenge on Victor, kills those closes to him, his brother, friends, and wife. These deaths could have been prevented if only society could have accepted the creature. “…I am miserable, and they shall share my wretchedness. Yet it is in your power to recompense me, and deliver them from an evil which it only remains for you to make so great, that not only you or your family, but thousands of others, shall be swallowed up in the whirlwinds of its rage” (87 Shelley). This quote shows the true nurture, which he received, from society. His own creator wishes to never see him again and to listen to him, so the monster blatantly mentions that if Victor does not listen then the rage he feels towards man and Victor will cause death to befall
This presents Victor showing unfair judgement towards the creature that he made “There can be no community between you and me; we are enemies” (55). This is unfair to the creature because he was born against his will and already Victor claiming to the creature that he has no community; a home. This is also unjust because Victor shows his hatred towards his creation that they are enemies before even giving the creature a chance to show himself and show who he really is and can be. Victor and his poor character towards his family and close friends make him more monster than the creature he had created “I could cope with the sullen despair that overwhelmed me: but the whirlwind passions of my soul drove me to suddenly leave” (51). With his family having hardship during this time and Victor knowing that and knows he needs to be there decides to chase his passion and leave without giving much thought. Victor knowing that his family problems and hardship are happening because of him doesn’t tell them what’s going on or what's happening in his current situation leaving them with no answers. This makes Victor a bigger monster because of his poor character he has towards his family and his poor statements towards the creature, a being that he
As the novel continues, Victor and The Monster both experience anger, sadness, and depression. They also seek revenge for one another after The Monster killed William Frankenstein, Elizabeth Lavenza, Henry Clerval, and caused the trial that led to the death of Justine Moritz . The Monster seeks revenge from Victor for making him so unappealing to the general eye “Cursed,
Did you know, that one of every three bites of the food eaten worldwide, depends on pollinators, especially bees, for a successful harvest? These small and hard working insects actually make it possible for many of our favourite foods to reach our table. In addition, Honeybees are known to be the most important insect/pollinator that transfers pollen between flowers and plants, and the word “pollination” is used to describe the service of providing bees to pollinate crop plants. However, under the condition of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD: honeybee decline) which is increasing each year, honeybees and other pollinators are in sharp declines across the United States and all around the world. Beekeepers were first alarmed about the mysteriously disappearing bees in the United States during 2006, when healthy bees were leaving their colonies in search of pollen and nectar, however never returning back to their hives. From then, this large ongoing decline in the bee population has been continuously leading to different threats, having a great impact on social/society issues, raising concerns relating to possible risks of global food security, and on the economy, where agriculture takes up a large portion of the economy. Therefore, in order to overcome these various threats, there has been many previous and recent studies/experiments, and the three solutions that science have concluded to solve the problem of these issues are: 1. Ban the seven most dangerous pesticides 2. Protect pollinator health by preserving wild habitat 3. Restore ecological agriculture(ref.).
The collapse of the honey bee population is an issue that is rarely talked about, and few realize the effect it has on each of us personally. In America the honey bee is responsible for pollinating almost every food that is seen in the grocery store. The population of this interesting insect has been on a decline for over a decade. According to United States Department of Agriculture, “The total number of managed honey bee colonies has decreased from 5 million in the 1940s to only 2.5 million today”. The debate is not if the honey bees are truly disappearing, there is enough evidence to be found that there is a decline in total population. The true question is why are the hives collapsing? Scientist have devoted many hours trying to find the one true cause, no clear answer has presented itself. Amongst the beekeeping community three major reasons for the collapse of the honey bee are the most accepted, which are pest and diseases, the use of poisons such as herbicides and pesticides, and lastly the human impact such as bad beekeeping practices and urbanization.
The argument to support the fact that global weather patterns have changed, draws its evidence from a number of sources and documented events, and by observation of what is happening in the environment. The increase in carbon emissions from industry, transportation and farming practices is widely accepted as being responsible for the greenhouse
Victor abandons the monster because he didn't turn out how he wanted him to be. That's one of the main reasons why the monster acted the way he did. It's also the fact that he was basically thrown away before he could even say his first word. The monster was only doing what all children do when they are brought to life, seek their mother or in this case their creator. When Victor ran out on the monster the monster had no clue what was going on. It expected Victor to come back, so when he didn’t you can imagine how much hurt the monster must of felt. His own creator didn’t want him because he didn’t look
The monster had a much worse formative “childhood” than Victor. At the beginning of its life, when the monster, similar to a newborn in naivety, awoke in a desolate location, he exclaimed, “ I was a poor, helpless, miserable wretch; I knew, and could distinguish, nothing; but feeling pain invade me on all sides.” This monster was simply abandoned by its creator and left to fend for itself in a harsh, painful world. But the monster yearns for someone to take care of him and says, “ where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me
There are billions of pounds of pesticides that are produced annually, despite the research showing how dangerous this overuse is. In fact, “recent research has documented the fact that certain pesticides use may actually increase pest problems” (Pojman, 2017, p. 800). This further demonstrates how pesticides are generally harmful rather than helpful. There are multiple organisms which pesticides affect, including poisoning humans, domestic animals, bees, while also causing a loss in crops, reducing populations of natural enemies, and growing pesticide resistance. Specifically, in the case of bee poisonings, the overall death of these bees results in the loss of 135 million dollars each year. There is also evidence that recently there have been more bee poisonings since 1962, since highly toxic insecticides are being used, while greater amounts of insecticides are being dispensed. Pesticides are also deployed through aircraft, allowing drifting problems. Additionally, insecticides are used by many populations other than farmers, including “golf-course managers, gardeners, and other landowners” to simply deal with their daily unwanted pests that will damage their flowers and crops (Williams, 2014, p. 33). If these insecticides are sprayed near a bee’s habitat or nest site, they will be harmed either immediately or subtly in regards to their behavior. Even worse, there are certain pesticides which treat seeds and thus allow it to be present in the plant’s tissue. This means that bees are being exposed to pesticides through pollen and nectar. In a study by Guseman, the goal was to discover which combinations of compounds were causing bees the most harm, so that a solution could be found. According to the study, bees are exposed to potentially dangerous pesticides in two distinct ways, through “in-hive miticides to control parasites and through the foraging activity of adult bees who collect pollen
What started as a curious creator and his science experiment became an insane man and his worst nightmare. Their feelings for each other escalated into pure hatred. They both sought to destroy each other. Victor chased the monster across Europe and through the arctic for a very long time. His feelings of vengeance were so strong that he knew he would not end the chase until one of them dies. The monster knew egged him on and taunted him the entire way. The creature even supplied food for Victor in order to lengthen his misery and prolong his
Universities minister David Willetts said in August that he wanted to encourage more UK students to study overseas, partly to increase their skill with foreign languages. He pointed out that, for example, there were 40,000 Indian students in Britain, but only a few hundred*had travelled the other way” (3-4). “The CBI added in a report this year that three-quarters of UK firms were dissatisfied with students ' language skills, while more than half saw "shortfalls in their international cultural awareness"’ (5). “The property world is certainly one in which awareness of other markets and good language skills can be very useful, whether working abroad or in dealing with foreign clients in the UK. So there are good reasons to consider studying abroad” (6). “It is not surprising, then, that the RICS list of accredited courses has included an increasing number of foreign institutions in the past few years. Marcus Potter, RICS director of developing markets, says that currently the institute has 578 accredited courses, of which 367 are in the UK. He adds: "It hasn 't quite got to being 50:50, but it is going in that direction" (7). “Part of the reason why more foreign institutions are joining the RICS list, Potter says, is simply that most within the UK have already established their accreditation, so the RICS is actively
