Pride and Prejudice Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are the two main characters in Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Darcy is presented as pride and Elizabeth prejudice but, that's not entirely true. Darcy is prejudice to the people lower than him which builds up his pride. Elizabeth is proud of who she is and also takes pride in her family even though they are considered poor. She's very prejudice against Darcy and judges him before she even knows him. Darcy first shows his pride at the Meryton Assembly when he says, “There is not another women in this room, whom it would not be a punishment for me to stand up with.” He ignores all the other girls except Mr. Bingley’s sister. Darcy judges Elizabeth's family for their ill-mannered behavior,
ascribing it to their lower rank in society, but the bad family behavior with which Darcy does not wish to associate himself by marrying Elizabeth is not confined to her class. Darcy’s proposal is deeply prideful. He states repeatedly that he has struggled to fight his love and overcome obstacles to make the proposal but, the fact of it is that Darcy wanting to marry Elizabeth because he was attracted to her personality shows that he has some good in him. Elizabeth's first real act of prejudice, I think, is how she trusts wickham’s word and what he says about Darcy. This puts Darcy in even more of a bad light in her eyes. Her prejudice against Darcy comes directly from his attitude, but ironically, she is passively guided by her pride in herself. Her change starts when she reads the letter in which Darcy explains the Wickham situation. On chapter 36 page 18-19 you can tell how bad she felt after reading Darcy’s letter when she says, “How despicably I have acted! I, who have prided myself on my discernment! I, who have valued myself on my abilities! Who have often disdained the generous candour of my sister, and gratified my vanity in useless or blameable mistrust! How humiliating is this discovery! Yet, how just a humiliation! Had I been in love, I could not have been more wretchedly blind! But vanity, not love, has been my folly. Pleased with the preference of have courted prepossession and ignorance, and driven reason away, where either were concerned. Till this moment I never knew myself.” Elizabeth’s primary features at the beginning of the book made her out to be strong-willed, quick to judge, and stubborn. She knew what she wanted or thought she knew until she met Darcy. Darcy’s Primary features were prideful. He thought he was better than Elizabeth because he had more money than her and his family was more sophisticated that hers. Both of them really mature throughout the book and learn that if you love someone then those things shouldn’t matter and that’s what I think the author is trying to say. I also think the author is trying to say don’t judge a book by its cover. Elizabeth judge Darcy from the start and it almost ruined her chance at finding love.

In today’s society, almost any woman could have the career of their dream if they apply themselves. They can choose to marry or not to marry, or choose whether they want children or not; Women have the option to be independent individuals. However, in the 19th century none of those were choices for women. Women weren’t allowed high educations or careers, they had to marry men for social and economic purposes, have children and be housewives. The women of Hamlet and Pride and Prejudice appear to have no exception; both texts show women to be dependent because of their gender, birthright and social class.
Throughout Jane Austen’s, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennett faces many challenges to realize that she was in the wrong and her prejudice against Mr. Darcy was misguided. Austen emphasizes the importance of wisdom through Elizabeth who faces the challenge of overcoming her prejudiced judgement to reach maturity and recognize the man she loves.
As a retaliation Elizabeth stuns Darcy by refusing his proposal very harshly stating "I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry." This shows the extent of her prejudice against Darcy as she says that even from the beginning she disliked him. She condemns him for his arrogant manner in which he proposed his actions to separate Jane and Bingley and his actions of unfairness on Wickham. He accepts these accusations without apology, even with contempt. However, he flinches when she accuses him of not behaving like a gentleman and when Elizabeth finishes her denunciation of him, Darcy angrily departs.

This passage occurs shortly after Elizabeth has received a letter from mr.darcy. The reason for the writing of the letter comes from the fact that Elizabeth had accused Darcy of two main issues. The first accusation against darcy was that he was a dishonorable man because he cheated Mr.Wickham out of land. The reader is first acquainted with Mr. Darcy's arrogance at the Meryton Ball.
