Elizabeth Bennet Character Analysis

In Pride and Prejudice, the main character is introduced by her father in the first chapter when her father states: "They have none of them much to recommend them, 'they are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters'(p.2). Elizabeth Bennet- also known as "Eliza" or "Lizzy"- is the second oldest daughter in the Bennet family. She lives with her parents and four sisters near the town of Meryton in Hertfordshire. Her introduction by her father gives the reader a sense that Elizabeth is not silly and is different from other girls. Having "quickness" means that Elizabeth has a quick mind and has the ability to make quick decisions without difficulty. Her beauty, intelligence and positive character appeals to the reader as she values love and is not impressed by wealth, high ranks or titles. The only barrier that stands in the way of her perfect personality is her habit of making quick, hasty judgments that often lead to regrets. Her character symbolizes the element of prejudice in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is an important character in the book as she completes the title of Austen's book. Her character intrigues the book and makes the story compelling. Evidence of her importance is first revealed through her initial prejudice against Darcy- who is wealthy and holds an excessive amount of pride in himself. Her tendency of making judgements based on the first impression creates the plot of this book. Elizabeth's first impression towards Darcy leads to many misunderstandings as his proud character does not attract her. ...d." This proves that her opinion about people is hard to change. She tries to convince herself that Darcy is telling a lie to ruin Wickham's attractive image. Elizabeth's character was important because the author used it to write an interesting conflict, as well as an enthralling end for her story.. Her character, throughout the entire book, was a proof that she symbolizes the element of prejudice and that the book would not be captivating without her character. Without Elizabeth, the title of this book( Pride And Prejudice) would not be suitable for the plot because the element of prejudice would be missing from the story. Her disposition piques the reader's curiosity and the reader becomes impatient to know the outcome of Elizabeth's moral dilemma, as well as the consequences of her prejudiced character which leads to the irresistible conclusion of this book.
