The novel Night is a memoir because it is a book about historical events. Its title night can either be literally or figuratively because when the “Night” comes bad things happen. Also the title brings fear and safety that the night brings. They are many ways to know if it is figuratively. The book has many figurative languages and they help out the title. For example, Elie fears that at night something will happen in the concentration camp. They are comparing the “Night” into personification because it does not feel. When it is Night scary things happen. While they were sleeping a jew tried to escape at midnight. Consequently, the Nazis heard a strange sound coming from the fence, and noticed that one of the jews was escaping. He was
Throughout his novel, Night, Wiesel’s use of figurative language paints a picture of the emotional impact on the Jews to help the reader visualize how traumatizing the Holocaust is for the prisoners. One type of figurative language Wiesel uses throughout this novel are metaphors. The first example is during the trip the trip to the concentration camps of Auschwitz on the cattle cars. Aboard the car that Wiesel is also on is an old lady named Mrs. Schächter. Wiesel establishes that Mrs. Schächter is becoming mad, when she shouts, “‘Jews, listen to me,’ she cried. ‘I see a fire! I see flames, huge flames!’ It was as though she were possessed by some evil spirit” (Wiesel 25). Wiesel uses a metaphor here to help the reader visualize how mad she
When the Holocaust happened there were many Jews killed due to gas chambers and fires that hid their remains. The book Night is about Elie wiesel (a survivor of the Holocaust) and what had happened to him in auschwitz. Elie wiesel is an actual survivor of the holocaust who wrote this book to show the horrors of auschwitz. He was very changed after he came out of the concentration camp known as Auschwitz(the biggest concentration camp during the holocaust). In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character, Elie, was affected by the events in the book because he didn't care if he died, he wasn't mournful over death, and he was psychologically affected.
By writing, Night, Elie was able to convey his experience of the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible history of events. It scarred many lives to the point of staying silent. Elie was one of many who stayed silent; however, he soon realized that someone who had personally experienced the torture that the Nazi had inflicted upon the Jews had to talk about it. If not, history would be repeated. Elie wanted to alert the world of the danger
Night is an autobiography by a man named Eliezer Wiesel. The autobiography is a quite disturbing record of Elie’s childhood in the Nazi death camps Auschwitz and Buchenwald during world war two. While Night is Elie Wiesel’s testimony about his experiences in the Holocaust, Wiesel is not, precisely speaking, the story’s protagonist. Night is narrated by a boy named Eliezer who represents Elie, but details set apart the character Eliezer from the real life Elie. For instance, Eliezer wounds his foot in the concentration camps, while Elie actually wounded his knee. Wiesel fictionalizes seemingly unimportant details because he wants to distinguish his narrator from himself. It is almost impossibly painful for a survivor to write about his Holocaust experience, and the mechanism of a narrator allows Wiesel to distance himself somewhat from the experience, to look in from the outside.
One of the most significant metaphors occurs at the end of the novel. Shortly after Eliezer is rescued from the concentration camp, he sees his reflection for the first time since he has been invaded by the Nazis. Wiesel states in his novel, “He looks in the mirror and sees the face of a corpse staring back at him” (Tackach 3980). This is an extremely powerful message as Wiesel is demonstrating how the soul of every Jew died from what they experienced during the Holocaust. Most Jews could never look at themselves as the same person again. Wiesel uses this metaphor to illustrate the significant change that the concentration camps caused to each victim
In this world, people go through the process of dealing with both empathy and malice. As a matter of fact, almost everyone has been through times where maybe they feel understood by some and misunderstood by others. Specifically, in the book “Night”, by Elie Wiesel, a character named Madame Schachter goes through the experience of fellow Jews displaying empathy and malice during in result to her behavior. Along with this, the reactions reveal just how inconsiderate we can act when in uncomfortable situations. One example of the malice and lack of sympathy they provided her was during the cattle car ride to Auschwitz. During this ride, she went a bit insane due to the devastating separation of her family. Elie explains, “She received several blows to the head, blows that could have been
The significance of night throughout the novel Night by Elie Wiesel shows a poignant view into the daily life of Jews throughout the concentration camps. Eliezer describes each day as if there was not any sunshine to give them hope of a new day. He used the night to symbolize the darkness and eeriness that were brought upon every Jew who continued to survive each day in the concentration camps. However, night was used as an escape from the torture Eliezer and his father had to endure from the Kapos who controlled their barracks. Nevertheless, night plays a developmental role of Elie throughout he novel.
Diction Analysis: The diction in this quote sets the tone for the rest of the passage ahead because it shows how weak Elie and his family are compared to the Nazi’s. Repetition in this quote has a deeper meaning then some may first take it. The repetition of “first” shows in this shows a sign of internal defeat. Elie says “it was the first time” he had ever seen his father cry. By stating not only he saw his father cry but it was also the first time in Elie’s 14 years, shows how weak his father felt at this point. He continues on to say he “never thought it was possible” which shows how he saw his father as this strong, undefeatable man but now he is seeing him at his lowest point which bring Elie to the realization of how bad everything that's
The section in the novel night that painted a dark and angry picture of human nature is when the Jews were fleeing Buna and hundreds of them were packed in a roofless cattle car. The Jews were only provided with a blanket that soon became soaked by the snowfall. They spent days in the bitter cold temperatures and all they ate was snow. For these reasons, many suffered and died. When they stopped in German towns, the people stared at that cattle cars filled with soulless bodies. “They would stop and look at [the Jews] without surprise.” It was a regular occasion for the German people to see suffering Jews and not feel pity. The dark and angry picture of human nature was when a German worker “took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it
