Winter Night is a story about a little girl named Felecia and her mother along with the maid that takes care of the house. As the evening darkens one winter night, the maid tells Felicia that once again her mother will not be coming home to their apartment until after Felicia is asleep. Felicia’s father is away in the war, and her mother goes out almost every night so a baby-sitter will come when it is time for the maid to leave. Felecia is a young girl that often feels alone if not for the maid and the sitters that come to stay until her mother comes home which most times is late at night after Felecia is asleep. The maid defends the mother’s absence on the grounds that, after working hard all day, she deserves her freedom at night. I think she feels some guilt but her needs seem to outweigh her duty to her child. Felecia’s mother works at an office and makes her money and feels she is entitled to spend it how she likes and tries to make herself happy, (Boyle 2013). The sitter that came on this night was different and paid attention to Felecia. Seeing Felecia took her back to another time which was happy and sad. From the moment, she entered the room all she could think of is how much Felecia reminded her of the little girl from the concentration camp. Felecia enjoyed the conversation and listening to the story of what happened with the little girl. Suddenly, they began to bond and for a little while Felecia became that same little girl which made both happy. Sometimes when two people meet they can fill each other’s voids and in this case I feel that is exactly what took place. The sitter was missing the child she took care of and lost and Felecia was happy to be treated like she was loved and missed. For this one night Felecia was getting her hair brushed and did not have to bath and was being held until they both fell off to sleep. They two were so peaceful and comfortable neither of them even heard when the mother came home. When the mother did come home and saw the two together she was shocked beyond
