God is someone that people believe in. God is someone people have faith in. What causes people to lose their faith? Something really tragic and heartbreaking. Something such as the Holocaust. When someone is put in a situation such as this it can really take a toll on them. Seeing people being murdered or die of exhaustion can darken the soul. Elie Wiesel knows what it is like to be in this situation. In Night, Elie Wiesel uses repetition, characterization, and symbolism to illustrate the loss of faith within the concentration camps.

“ I did not fast…. there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God’s silence” (69). Elie did not fast. He did not believe he had any reason to anymore. There was no longer a God to him. Part of the reason was to please his father’s wishes because his father never wanted Elie to fast. Elie makes the decision not to do this which changes his character. In the beginning Elie believes in God and wants to learn more. Then now we see he does not even fast because there is no more God to him. The concentration camps changed him to no longer believe in something that he once was all about. Another time characterization was used to represent loss of faith was when the Akiba Drumer decided to give up. “Poor Akiba Drumer, only if he could have kept his faith in God, if only he could have considered this suffering a divine test, he would not have been swept away by the selection” (77). The Akiba Drumer gave up. When the selection came around, he simply did not try to save himself. He wanted to be chosen for the crematoria. He lost his faith and that resulted in him giving up his
