The idea of personal responsibility to other people helps show us that people’s lives can change in an instant, through the theme dehumanization. When Elie arrives at Auschwitz he is immediately given a number, tattooed to his arm, a permanent memory from these bad times. This replaces his name known by all guards and officials, this is shown through a very powerful and memorable line,“I became A-7713” (42). None of the Jews that came in any concentration camps went without a number on their arms. This is showing the reader how they are not really being cared about and just the Nazis are caring about themselves and making it easier for them. It is also giving an example of how Elie’s life was changing within the first hour of him and his family and friends arriving in Auschwitz. …show more content…

When Elie was later beaten and tantalized by the Nazis after he laughed and associated with people who were Jewish, he realized that he wasn’t allowed to have a normal life and was not allowed to have normal emotions towards things that would have been funny or fun to do outside of the war. During the Holocaust, all regards of the Nazis having a little bit of responsibility to other people were not even the slightest for them. They did not care about how they felt or what they wanted to do. They instead, labelled them as numbers and put them in cruel and harsh conditions that are unimaginable. The Nazis have no personal respect or responsibility towards the Jews or people that were inferior to the Nazis. They treated all of them like they were worthless and no to be cared
