In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Pit and the Pendulum,” Poe, uses the horror elements of isolation, explores violent sides of humanity, and plot twist to add suspense to the story. In the beginning of the story, Poe was standing before the judges waiting to see what sentence they were going to give him. He ended up being sentenced to death and then he fainted. When he woke up all he saw was blackness. “The blackness of eternal night encompassed me. I struggled for breath.
