Elementary School Counselor: The Spine of the School
The girl you see sitting at the end of the hall every day after school with her big hoodie practically swallowing her small body is not there because she actually wants to see everyone else go home… She stays there until the custodian tells her he needs to sweep, and says it’s time for her to go home. Next, she moves to the corner on the opposite side of the building and waits for the custodian to demand she go home now because they will be locking the doors. She grabs her things and heads to the door before she had the cops called. The reason the girl stays there is because home for her isn’t a happy place filled with love and motivation, so she’d rather spend all the time possible any place but there. Life at home can have a negative effect on school life too, so when feeling helpless just know a counselor is a possible way out of the darkness.

According to “State Requirements” claims, before becoming a counselor it is required to have been a teacher for a minimum of two years prior. Texas also states that after this has been successfully completed, then a Texas School Counselor Certificate will awarded (State Requirements). School guidance and counseling claims the minimum degree necessary in becoming a counselor is a masters degree (School Guidance and Counseling). The completion of a school counselor preparation program is also recommended by Texas School Counselor Certificate (Texas School Counselor Certificate). With the knowledge of these requirements the pathway to being an authorized school counselor will be made clear
Pashtana said she would rather die than not go to school and acted on her words. Her education is limited and she doesn’t have all the recourses to make school easier, yet she still loves and wants all the knowledge she can get. At the time when all children are adjusting to their ever changing bodies, the insults and cruelties of their peers begin and children who were once friends for many years, become strangers over night caught in a world of bullying. A child who is bullied can develop severe depression which can lead to suicide; and although schools have been educated in recognizing the signs of bullying, there is an epidemic that has yet to be fully addressed within our schools or society.
I believe the school psychologist was not acting ethically. According to Standard I.1.1, "parent consent is required if the consultation about particular child or adolescent is likely to be extensive and ongoing and/or if school actions may result in a significant intrusion on student or family privacy beyond what might be expected in the course of ordinary school activities." Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. Police have been involved in schools for a very long time (Morrison 2003; McNicholas n.d.). The origin of school resource officers (SRO) dates back to the 1950s, when Flint, Michigan, assigned an officer to a school in 1953. In the 1960s and 1970s, various towns in Florida also had local police that assigned officers to some schools—the term ”school resource officer” is credited to a Miami police chief (Griffin 2000). SROs also began in Tucson, Arizona, in the early 1960s. However, it’s also challenging as every child’s situation you encounter are never identical placing you through stressful decisions and circumstances. Pressures and trials may be situations you attempt to evade, but these situations in this line of work are inevitable. I desire a career where you’re put to the test and when that occurs, I am prepared to increase my skills and experience to become an overall human being. I crave a challenge and know will do whatever it takes to overcome it.
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
All states require teachers in public schools to be licensed or certified(BLS.gov,Web). Those who teach in private schools are generally not required to be licensed. High school teachers typically are awarded a secondary or high school certification(BLS.gov,Web). This allows them to teach the 7-12th grade. Requirements for certification will change by what state you are in. However, all states require that teachers have at least a bachelor’s degree. States require completing a teacher preparation program and supervised experience in teaching, typically gained through student teaching(BLS.gov). States usually require candidates to pass a teaching certification test, on top of test that shows their knowledge in the subject they will teach later
