One of my activities I am currently doing is volunteering for the Honors Academy at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) as head of the elder council. The Honors Academy is a six week long summer program for students 11 to 15 years old, and is an integral component for selecting students to enter college early through the Early Entrance Program (EEP). The elder council is a group of students in the EEP who have recently graduated or are at least entering their fourth year of college. These EEP students, elders, must be approved by the director of the program to be a good role model. Students felt comfortable approaching me to ask for help or advice, and I was well-liked for my enthusiasm and easy-going personality. During spring semester 2017, I selected elders who were available during the summer to be a part of the elder council, and then presented the list of students for the director of EEP to approve. Afterwards, I created time slots to conduct interviews during the Honors Academy, ensured that at least three council members would be present, and reserved a conference room. I was also in charge of compiling a list of interview questions with input from the other council members that were then approved by the director. During the Honors Academy, I am participating in interviews and representing the council during the admissions decision meeting at the end of the summer to select which students from the Honors Academy will be accepted into the EEP. Being head of the council required me to have strong leadership skills, manage my time wisely and to be constantly communicating with the other council members and the director to ensure everything would run smoothly during the …show more content…
My research investigates general chemistry students’ understanding of general chemistry using a model in chemistry education known as the chemistry triplet involving three multiple representations-- macroscale, nanoscale and symbolic. The macroscale refers to the phenomena that can be experienced with the physical senses, such as sight, hearing and touch. The nanoscale refers to the behavior of molecules, atoms and other particles that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and the symbolic refers to letters, numbers, operations and equations used to represent physical and chemical states and processes. I am revising a manuscript where I am first author, assisting other laboratory members in designing their studies and analyzing their data, and attending weekly lab meetings. Educating others is important to me, and I feel that publishing the manuscript may encourage general chemistry professors to think about how they assess and teach their students. Since I have been in the research lab the longest and I am on campus nearly every day to conduct elder council interviews for the Honors Academy, I have continued attending the weekly lab meetings and spending time with one of the undergraduate students who is continuing to conduct research during the summer. The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry by Larry Gonick and Craig Criddle is a non-fiction book that utilizes visual images and cartoons to cover the basics and intricacies of Chemistry. It consists of two-hundred and fifty-six pages and was published by Collins Reference on May 3, 2005. It covers topics such as chemicals reactions, solutions, acid basis, and chemical thermodynamics in unique fashion that makes chemistry fun and easy to learn as well as understand. The book has no consistent build up or story to it. It simply moves from chemistry subject A to chemistry subject B, explaining the various components that make up the subject of chemistry.

At Community Boards, the skills and disciplines that I learned was that I was able to handle clients through phone calls more effectively and in a manner in which I can be neutral. I also learned to be very patient with some clients over the phone, where some phone calls had spent over an hour of the client’s time talking to me about their issues at their residence. I was able to cultivate the skill of being able to use different communication styles in order to deal with certain people and their styles, for often I would have to deal with people that very emotional, because of their situation, whether they be angry, sad, or hopeless, I had to alter my style of communication to accommodate their needs and try to calm them down. I believe that I provide plenteous hours of service to my school and community. In my school, I am a member of Interact Club- a club that encourages volunteer work regarding the school and the community. I have participated in many Interact activities such as Make a Difference Day- cleaning trash at the Wildlife Refuge, Martin Luther King Day at Stockton University- helping organizations such as Circle K, and Project Green- cleaning trash and planting at the Atlantic City beach. In addition to these activities, I have volunteered at Seashore Gardens over the summer before my junior year. There, I was able to engage and interact with the elderly by coloring with them, distributing their lunches, and getting to know them. With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. There are several populations that interest me however possible preferences include families that deal with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families that have experienced domestic violence is an interest because in the past I had friends whose family was dealing domestic violence and the impact could clearly in all members of the family. Seeing the difference that was made by those who worked to help their family made this population a preference. Another population that is a possible preference is are those who are disabled. The interest to help those who were disabled started when a faculty called Edelweiss opened. Up to that point there had been no interaction with those who lead different lives than myself. Through the year that was spent volunteering the changes in those that had lessons became obvious. Being able to see the achievements of those who had lessons made it a continued interest. In the past couple of years a new side of this interest was shown. There is someone that is a close friend who is disabled because of seizures who has had trouble with employers. Seeing how she has been treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and has made it a continued interest professionally and personally.
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.
The participation in hospital committees was not part of my professional career until I have become a part of the workforce at the VA Hospital. Here, I realized that a partnership among nurses and other disciplines has tremendous value and a strong influence to achieve mutual goals focused on improving patients' care, promoting the safe nursing practice and supporting organization's reforms. Contacting organizations, collaborating with others, and creating meaningful service events are all activities in a day’s work for a leader of the ETHS Community Service Club. As a student run club, I, as a student leader, have to find, design, and plan service events for club members to participate in each month. These events range from wielding a hand saw for the North Branch Restoration Project to deciding which person, or group, in need to give a loan to with the Kiva Microfinancing Organization, and they require a considerable amount of planning. First, there’s brainstorming--what’s a problem that students at this school are passionate about? Then comes contacting--is there an organization near our high school that we can work with, or an event already happening nearby that needs volunteers?
I want to be able to provide guidance and support, as well as fun opportunities such as the Freshmen Flotilla and Bedtime Stories, in order to foster a sense of community amongst students and faculty. I have noticed that many of my friends that I lived with the Honors dorm who moved to live off campus have become disconnected with the community of the Honors College, and I would love to make an impact by keeping older students involved.
