Elder abuse is defined as a single or repeated act, often by someone in a relationship of trust that results in harm or distress to an older person (Post, 2010).
Sometimes in the eyes of society people believe that the older you get, the more useless you become which is a contributing factor in elder abuse and neglect. Population ageing is one of the most remarkable trends and is becoming a world-wide issue. Older aged people are often the most recognized, yet forgotten group in society because people over the age of 65 are often perceived as the wisest and most insightful about life and its experiences, however, they are occasionally forgotten due to the respect and value they once devoted to the world.

Just like most other cases of other types of crime in Canada, many elder abuse cases go unreported making it difficult to get the exact number of incidents. A reason they go unreported is because some of the victims are simply unable to report due to mobility issues and problems speaking, and fear of letting others know is also a major factor. Without reports, cases cannot be solved. Unfortunately, elder mistreatment has always been an issue, however, it is much worse and is expected to worsen in the future. There are laws pertaining to elder abuse In Canada, but not enough has been done to fully prevent the vicious acts from happening. We have not yet properly addressed elder abuse because it is still a major issue where elderly people are suffering from injuries, some of whom often on a daily basis.
The focus is always on what caused the abuse to happen and not on the victim’s health and well-being. Mainly because it is not taken as serious as abuse really is in this country. Until all aspects of the crimes are taken into account, unfortunately, elderly people will continue to suffer even though they should be living a peaceful and relaxed life. The hard work and dedication they have contributed to society should be allowing them to have a good relaxed life, but instead, some elders are worried because they are getting abused or in fear that they will eventually be
