How did El Chapo grew.
He born in Mexico, Joaquin Guzman Loera entered the drug trade as a teenager. By his teens, Guzman had been kicked out of the family home and was forced to make his own way. With little schooling in his background, he eventually found himself following his father’s path, growing marijuana for small amounts of cash. He founded the Sinaloa Cartel in 1989, over time building it into an immensely profitable global drug-trafficking operation. It’s believed Guzman has married at least three times and is the father of nine, possibly 13 children.
In April 2017 netflix released the first season of its crime drama, El Chapo, which depicts the rise and eventual downfall of the notorious drug kingpin, played by actor marco de la O. The second season was released in September in the same year. El chapo is an American crime television series, co-produced by Netflix and Univision, about the life of Joaquin El Chapo Guzman. The series premiered on April 23, 2017 at Univision before airing on Netflix worldwide. It starts Marco de la O as the titular
character. The series recounts the beginnings of Joaquin El Chapo Guzman in 1985, when he was a low-level member of the Guadalajara Cartel, his rise to power as head of the Sinaloa Cartel, and his downfall. On May 12, 2017, Univision confirmed that the series would be renewed for a second season. Season 2 premiered on September 17, 2017. Netflix released the first season, comprising nine episodes, on June 16, 2017. The second season was released on December 15, 2017. Guzman was captured for the first time in Guatemala on 9 June 1993, extradited to Mexico and sentenced to 20 years, nine months in prison on charges of drug trafficking, criminal association and bribery. He was jailed at Federal Social Readaptation center No. 1, a maximum-security for social Rehabilitation No. 2 (also known as “Puente grande”) in Jalisco, after being convicted of three crimes : possession of firearms, drug trafficking and the murder of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo( the charge would later be dismissed by another judge). He had been tried and sentenced inside the Federal prison on the outskirts of Almoloya de Juarez, Mexico state.

The arrest of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman was a victorious circumstance for the Mexican government, who have been closing down on his presence for the recent past years. Mexican authorities began taking down high ranked members of the Sinaloa Cartel including two of Guzman’s main associates. On February 22, 2014, the world’s most wanted man had also been captured. Although the biggest drug lord has been captured, the crime and violence left behind cannot be forgotten.
Recognized as one of the most fearless and violent cartels in all of Mexico, Los Zetas was brought forth by a need for personal security in the Gulf Cartel. This former hit man/security style operation, active since 1997, has since grown into its own ruthless and violent organization becoming the second most powerful cartel and easily the most feared in all of Mexico. Heavily trained and armed, members of Los Zetas are set apart from other cartels because of the level of brutality they are willing to administer to those who cross them, though they had initially hoped that by being more intimidating they would have to fight less. It is their command of the drug market, their lack of fear in using violent tactics, and the sheer level of brutality used by their members that sets this cartel apart from all others. It has said that it has gotten worse because about 1,000 people have died each month in drug violence since Pena Nieto took office, and the army is still involved in clashes with the cartels across large parts of the country.
It was a time of civil war between the Columbian Conservative Party and the Columbian Liberal Party. However, vast numbers of people were killed on his command. His particular way of handling any authorities questioning his actions was to bribe them or to kill them, or ‘plata o plomo’, Colombian slang for ‘money or bullets’. Escobar was believed to have had Medellin drug lord Fabio Restrepo murdered in 1975, in order to take over full leadership of the Medellin Cartel.

The Sinaloa Cartel was led by Joaquin Guzman who was a most-wanted Mexican drug trafficker worth a billion dollars. Under control of Joaquin, the Sinaloa Cartel became powerful and won the battle against the Juarez Cartel who was a former partner of the group. The battle, caused by want for more routes into the U.S. resulted in 12,000 deaths and led the group to employ gangs such as the Artist Assassins, Genre Nueva, and Los Mexicles to fight against the Juarez Cartel. The second half of the Guadalajara Cartel, the Tijuana Cartel was started in the 1990s and by the early 2000s became one of the “biggest and most violent criminal groups in Mexico,” as stated by the article, “The Five Most Famous Drug Cartels”.
When he first formed the cartel. He chose marijuana because it was the cash crop of the time and then in the 1980s he switch to cocaine because that became the new cash crop. His cartels cocaine made up 80% of the United States illegal drug market and made up 90% of Europe’s illegal drug market. On June 9, 1995 was arrested by the Colombian National Police during a house raid in Cali. He was found in a hollowed-out bathroom cabinet with an oxygen tank. He was sentence to 15 years. Then in 2002 he was temporality freed because of a controversial judicial order issued by deputy judge Pedro José Suárez, who considered that the above reduction was applicable through habeas corpus. He was recaptured by Colombian authorities in Cali, in March 2003. Then on December 3, 2004 he was extradited to the United States. Lacey, M. 2010. Many critics are now making comparisons between the Mexican drug cartels, like the one mentioned above, and legitimate corporations like Netflix, or Google. There are currently seven major Mexican drug cartels. Although, the cartels may all come from different backgrounds and have different approaches towards trafficking drugs, they all share a similar business style structure to their organizations and they all have well regulated rank and file systems. These drug cartels are adapting to the loss of their much-enjoyed freedom to move illegal drugs through Mexico and across the border into the United States.
In Jeanette Schmidt’s article, Transporting Cocaine states, “Colombian cartels would pay the Mexican groups as much as $1,000/kilo to smuggle cocaine into the United States” (Schmidt, 2). The Colombian cartels would then pick up the drugs and resume distribution and sales efforts, making personal profits that are unrecorded. In order to seize these individuals who are growing in power and numbers, the U.S. must control the connections between Mexico and Columbia.
