The Egyptian civilization evolved through a series of changing climate, technological developments and a population growing in skills and need for order in a chaotic environment. The earliest origins of Egyptian culture began in the Western Desert now known as the Sahara Desert, but sometime from 11,000 BCE to 6000 BCE the land was lush and full of life sustaining grasslands in which giraffes, hippopotamus and lions thrived alongside a burgeoning pastoral and hunter gather communities. Nabta Playa and Dakhleh Oasis brought about many of the basic cultural developments that were refined and embellished to become a significant part of what makes the Egyptian civilization so unique. As the monsoonal pattern shifted, the peoples of the Western …show more content…
According to Dr. Smiley (vlec 2, 2014), two striking inventions emerged around 7000 BCE, which changed the course of this areas civilization because when villages began to settle, pottery and wells were needed. Well digging and pottery worked hand in hand and gave people the ability to live in the region year round. Interestingly, Chandler (2006) discovered an area called Masara (9000 BCE) was technologically advanced and possessed pottery, stone tools, arrowheads and elaborate jewelry, indicating that these types of products were considered a significant part of the Egyptian early civilization that continued to progress and evolve into what is characteristically Egyptian. In the Fayuum during 6000-5000 BCE, Dr. Smiley (vlec 4, 2014) discusses a form of pottery that incorporated temper, necessary ingredient to help the clay hold together, was used more like disposable containers. Afterwards came Badarian pottery possessing noticeably different techniques having the classically Upper Egyptian look of burnished black rims and brilliant red bases. Drawings were used from early on in the Western Desert and symbolic of Egyptian origins, according to Dr. Smiley (vlec2, 2014) and two rock paintings that were symbolic of the civilizations’ origins and slightly later, animals appeared and tracings were made to document the finding. Additionally, at the time of Naqada III, both pallets and pottery (pallets originated in Naqada II as slate cosmetic pallets) became more elaborate and had distinctive drawings, whereas they appear to be the precursor to hieroglyphs, as we know them now and eventually a writing system. The most significant aspect of the emerging hieroglyphs is what they represent to the cultural advancement of Egypt. The idea that these drawings eventually became a writing system that brought about education and literacy. From Hierakonpolis through the unification of Upper Egypt by Scorpion I, Dr. Smiley (vlec 5, 2014) discusses how the hieroglyphs developed into a fantastic system of writing that allowed the rulers to manage and keep of track of taxes and tribute in regard to distribution of grains, beer, and other necessary items in their storehouses. These are remarkable achievements and an undeniable aspect of Egyptian culture. McDowell (1996) indicated that scribes used specific tools to decorate tombs, and the rate of literacy in workers at Deir-el-Medina increased dramatically due to their need to
The first civilization to rise was the Mesopotamia, located in present day Iraq, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and Egypt, along the Nile River. It’s split in two ecological zones. In the south Babylonia (irrigation is vital) and north Assyria (agriculture is possible with rainfall and wells). By 4000 B.C.E., people had settled in large numbers in the river-watered lowlands of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Archaeologists have shown that large-scale irrigation appeared only long after urban civilization had already developed, meaning major waterworks were a consequence of urbanism (population). Mesopotamia cities were made of people called the Summerians in the land of Sumer located on the south of Babylonia. The Summerian city was one of
Was it a gift or a curse? The Nile is the world's longest river at 4,160 miles. Of that total, approximately 660 to 700 miles of the Nile are actually in Egypt. It is one of the four most important river civilizations in the world. Land in Egypt was called Black Land (representing life) and Red Land (representing danger). For Egyptians, the Nile meant the difference between life and death. Today, we know that the Nile influenced ancient Egypt in many areas of life such as providing food, shelter and faith to the people. Specific areas dealing with settlement location, agricultural cycle, jobs, trade, transportation and spiritual beliefs will prove the case.
During its years of development, specifically around in 3500, the ancient land of Egypt was located close to multiple continents, these continents being Europe, Asia, and Africa. It was separated into different divisions, mainly geographical, there being four major physical geographic sections. The first was water-based, the Nile Valley and Delta, the second two were deserts, Eastern Desert and Western Desert, and the last was the Sinai Peninsula. The ancient Egyptians also considered their land to be separated in two more divisions: “red land” and “black land”. The desert surrounding Egypt was the “red land” section because it was barren. The area served as a means of protection, as it divided Egypt from enemies that wanted to attack and ...
Egypt officially the Arab Republic associated with Egypt, is a transcontinental nation spanning the northeast portion of Africa and also southwest corner associated with Asia. It would be the world's only contiguous Eurafrasian nation. Most of Egypt's territory lies inside Nile Valley. Egypt is a Mediterranean country. Egypt has one of several longest histories associated with any modern area, arising in the particular tenth millennium BC as one of the world's first nation states. Ancient Egypt experienced lots of the earliest developments associated with writing, agriculture, urbanization, organized religion plus central government in history. Egypt is the predominantly Sunni Muslim area with Islam given that their states hope. The percentage
The need for writing in Uruk was drastically different than that of the Egyptians, however. As evidenced at the archaeological site of Hierakonpolis, the Egyptian sy...
As archaeological work on Predynastic Egypt continues, in future years we can expect considerable new evidence that will further reshape our understandings of the rise of Egyptian civilization. The field is increasingly benefiting from the use of modern techniques such as remote sensing, physical dating, and analytical techniques. As the amount of evidence builds, the rise of complex civilization in the Egyptian Nile Valley during the crucial two millennia from 5000–3000 b.c. will become ever clearer.
A debate has been raging recently regarding whether Nubia was equal in strength, power, and was as successful as Ancient Egypt. Many people believe that the Nubians were just as powerful as Ancient Egypt but in my opinion from the information I have read Egypt was the dominate culture. Egypt had many great natural resources that gave it an advantage over nearby areas such as gold, copper and stone for building monuments and temples. Next, Egypt had an army that was stronger in force and also had more modern tools and weapons for their use. Finally the Ancient Egyptians proved they were a successful empire due to the length of time they remained in control. We will look at both cultures closely and compare strengths
Egyptian culture and the American culture are similar in their beliefs and industrialism, style and beauty. Egyptians and Americans both used and cultivated the natural raw materials around them, example Egyptian use silk for clothing and Americans use cottons and many different textual from the lands. Each culture thrived off the land and religion is a big part of life.
Over thousands of years, the ancient Egyptian civilization been closely associated with religion, mythologists have considered itself one of the most important fundamentals of the Egyptian civilization, more than five thousand years, and the pillars of the establishment of the Egyptian state and standardization. However, I was always fascinated about the myths in the middle east, not because I was born in Iraq and grew up in an Assyrian family, it’s because the ancient Egyptians have contributed in adding many civilizational achievements to the world through the knowledge of their agriculture, stability, creating the first major central country in the region, and may be accompanied by the presence of major achievements in various fields in
The overall point of this investigation is to determine the influence of feminine stature in the Egyptian culture. I explored in deeper into this topic because the Egyptian culture had a lot of facets in their own culture that had disappeared for some time, only to be assimilated into modern day culture. Their culture was before their time. The period of the Egyptians was from 3500 - 525 B.C., where in 525 B.C. the Persians conquered the Egyptians (more on that later). The method that I am using that determine the feminine importance is through various articles that are displaying the role of the women in the daily society, articles about the role of goddesses in the Egyptian people’s lives, and the crusade that the Egyptian people lost
The early prehistoric dwellers on the Nile inhabited the terraces or plateaux left by the river as it cut its bed. Tools and implements left by these early inhabitants of Egypt show their gradual development from seminomadic hunter-gatherers to settled agriculturists. By 4000 bc the civilization of Egypt was in its earliest formative stages; the Predynastic period, which lasted until about 3100 bc, had begun.
The ancient Egyptians were people of many firsts. They were the first people of ancient times to believe in life after death. They were the first to build in stone and to fashion the arch in stone and brick. Even before the unification of the Two Lands, the Egyptians had developed a plow and a system of writing. They were accomplished sailors and shipbuilders. They learned to chart the cosmos in order to predict the Nile flood. Their physicians prescribed healing remedies and performed surgical operations. They sculpted in stone and decorated the walls of their tombs with naturalistic murals in vibrant colors. The legacy of ancient Egypt is written in stone across the face of the country from the pyramids of Upper Egypt to the rock tombs in the Valley of the Kings to the Old Kingdom temples of Luxor and Karnak to the Ptolemaic temples of Edfu and Dendera and to the Roma...
The literature of Ancient Egypt is the result of a four thousand year period. Hieroglyphic, demotic and hieratic are the three types of writing it was written in. The characters first consisted of pictures of objects, and ...
Hieroglyphics were a traditional form of writing used by the Egyptian people. These carvings are one of the earliest examples contributing to current knowledge of ancient Egyptian mathematics. Inscriptions of early hieroglyphic numerals can be found on temples, stone monuments and vases. Such carvings typically include groups of inscriptions. Although hieroglyphs indicate the use of mathematics in early Egyptian civilization, they shed little light on any ...
Until today, architects and artists, draw inspiration and understanding from Ancient Egyptian art and architecture as they mastered it. The pyramids are masterpieces that bring wonders to other civilizations; they are marvel of human engineering and constructions. Also, the modern world has benefited greatly from the agricultural and irrigation techniques used by ancient Egyptians in the Nile Valley. Their success of their civilization depended heavily on their religious beliefs as it is what dominated and directed their lifestyle. To conclude, Ancient Egypt left an extraordinary imprint on the world today and many countries across the world value and houses their artifacts. The civilization of the ancient Egyptians was not civilized slip at the age of time. Ancient Egyptians civilization was a unique cultural characteristics and achievements that were authenticity. Ancient Egypt civilization has its own credibility among all civilizations, making Egypt the Mother of the World. Ancient Egypt originated in the valley, and the Nile Delta, where ancient Egyptians lived. Ancient Egypt’s cultural aspect refers to the language, worship, customs, organization to their lives, the life management, administrative affairs, their conception of the nature around them, and their dealings with their
