In today’s world, society stresses a lot of value on materialistic things. Whether it is the newest electronic gadget, or the latest trend of fashion; somebody somewhere is buying it. This materialistic idea is very evident during the holiday season when thousands of shoppers are standing outside in the cold for the latest trend. But, society’s materialistic ideology can sometimes be misconstrued with true self-identity. Meaning that society often times define their self-worth by what they own instead of by the content of their character. When this ideology is taken place, it brings about negative effects on society. Furthermore, the humanistic character of society becomes tainted. If this identity crisis is not resolved, then the next generation of society will be lost without a cause.
There are negative effects that identity crisis causes on society. Some of the negative effects that come from materialistic ideology are stereotyping and prejudging. Society stereotype other people who do not have the latest name brand clothes or whatever maybe the latest gadgets in electronics. When this is done they tend to put those people in social class as being in a low class, because not having these things to society makes the people seem like they are not as wealthy as those who do seem to have the latest things. With having society judging the people in the world who may be less fortunate than others, it makes those who are less fortunate fell as if they are not as important as those who do have all the nice and latest things. So, this makes people feel that there is something wrong with being in touch with their inner person. It would not fair for the next generation of society to be uneducated about true self-worth. Furthermore, society should display positive messages about self-acceptance through the media. For example, make more positive commercials about being true to yourself, and also, how material things do no always bring out the trueness in who you really are. It is okay for people to be themselves regardless of what the world would have to say. The next generation should not be punished for not understanding how to be themselves and understand their true identities. For that to happen it is up to this generation now to put a stop to this and help build a better foundation for them and let them know that it is ok to who they are. It is time for a change.
On the other hand, ideally one should be true to one’s heart, if Disney’s Mulan is to be believed. But these are neither solid pieces of advice nor wise counsel; they are at best hand-wavy, wishy-washy statements that offer no guidance on traveling the minefield that is remaining true to oneself. It is given that as we go through our lives and encounter different experiences our identity of yourselves and where we belong may change. As this happens we may gain or relinquish new values and from this identity and image our influenced. 'A bad self-image and low self-esteem may form part of identity?but often the cause is not a loss of identity itself so much as a loss of belonging.'; Social psychologists suggest that identity is closely related to our culture. Native people today have been faced with this challenge against their identity as they are increasingly faced with a non-native society. I will prove that the play The Rez Sisters showed this loss of identity and loss of belonging. When a native person leaves the reservation to go and start a new life in a city they are forced to adapt to a lifestyle they are not accustomed to. They do not feel as though they fit in or belong to any particular culture. They are faced with extreme racism and stereotypes from other people in the nonreservational society.

In his novel, Brave New World, Aldous Huxley provides stark warnings for contemporary American society by using the futuristic but relatable setting of the “World State”. When reading such dystopian novels as Brave New World, readers must consider the implications of the author’s warnings and how they are relevant to the world we live in. One such warning that deeply relates to contemporary American society is that of the dangers of consumerism and the materialistic view that results from it. Current research suggests some theorists believe identity as something essential, substantial, fixed and essentially invariable. Yet other modern theorists consider the creation of identity as existential for each individual, using the personal responsibilities for ones own actions which create ones own moral values. Identity in modernity is associated to individuality to developing a uniquely individual self.
As humans, are we allowed to determine our own individuality? If we are, how much of an impact can we make on our own originality? The answer to the first question is yes, however, the answer to the second question is one that has changed over the years due to the advancements of our world. Identity is, in a sense, “an unfolding story…continually recast in the course of experience” (Sennett 175-176). In other words, a person develops their identity through experiences they have in their lifetimes, usually while growing. Nowadays, people have more choice over who they become than they have had in the past. Some examples of this “control” are due to advancements in science and technology, curriculum in education, culture, and what is shown in the media. Because of (but not limited to) these factors, a person has more control but also more influence on the development of their own identity.
To begin with, we technically are not born with identity; it is a socially constructed attribute. Identity is a transient thing, which changes over time as we grow and mature. The self-concept, which is our own personal understanding of who we are, combines with self awareness to cultivate a cognitive representation of the self, called identity (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2010, p.118). In other words, who we are is controlled by internal and external factors that combine to make us who we become. Bring new media outlets into the equation, such as the internet, and media is now regarded as an "extension of everyday life and a tool of cultural change" (Singh, 2010). Thus, identity formation, as a social concept, is being transformed in new and even more global ways.
In today’s society, there has been a greater emphasis on identity than in the past. The perception of identity has changed due to the growing human population, and being able to distinguish oneself from the general population. Identity is the uniqueness of a person. As people get older, their identity might change since they become more aware of the society and also are more independent. By creating and recognizing an identity, one can interact with others who have a similar identity. Identity can be formed socially. There are several factors that influence an identity.
According to Erikson, when adolescents are unable to find ownership of an identity, their lives can spiral off in several directions. In some ways they will reverse the role of their desire, slipping into a socially unacceptable role or a role that does not match who they wish to become (Feldman, 2012). Other teenagers will forego social interactions, leaving them to feel sad and alone in the world (Feldman, 2012). Teenagers thrive off of finding an identity to center themselves around, and when they fail to identify one, the adolescent crisis ensues (Feldman, 2012).
