Police corruption is generally defined as a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers break their social contract and abuse their power for personal or departmental gain. Barker and Roebuck (1973) classified corrupt acts committed by police officers into eight different types. These types of corruption include corruption of authority, kickbacks, shakedowns, protection of illegal activities, the fix, opportunistic theft, direct criminal activities, and internal payoffs.
