Cognitive Development and Minecraft
In a few short years the game Minecraft has become the third most popular video game of all time and it’s quickly rising to the number one position. One cannot go into the average elementary classroom today and not hear constant chatter about this game from children of all ages and gender. As the popularity of this game reaches record breaking heights, more and more parents and educators are questioning the effects that playing Minecraft can have on cognitive development. Although some critiques only see this as another video game that is rotting children’s brains, there are others that can see the possibility of Minecraft being an educational tool with unlimited potential. This basic survival based game promotes cognitive development in children as earlier as the pre-operational stage and up through the formal operational stage by allowing them to practice skills that expand abilities in perception, attention, memory, thinking, and reasoning.
Markus Persson was the original creator of Minecraft in 2009 and then in 2011 he gave control to Jens Bergensten. The original audience for this game was largely adults, but with the help of the internet and videos uploaded to YouTube showing off what can be created in the game, it was not long until people of all ages were playing. It is currently available on almost every platform imaginable including computers, phones, tablets, and gaming consoles and its low price makes it easily accessible to everyone. In the game you use tools to collect materials which then can be used to build structures such as a house to protect you from zombies that come out at night in survival mode. A teacher by the name of David Vreman has constructed a three-dimensional periodic table of the elements and it uses sign posts to highlight key properties of each element while demonstrating their uses (Short, 2012). It’s easy to see how Minecraft can be used in other subjects as well including foreign languages, history, art, or computer programming. Most importantly, Minecraft brings creativity back to learning which some researchers have shown is one of the hardest mental tasks to develop and having a strongly developed sense of creativity can benefit all realms of cognitive development.

When I was younger, my favorite game to play was Minecraft. The game was a fun way to express myself and to make decisions like “It’s getting dark, maybe I should start heading home so I can sleep in my bed and avoid the mobs” and that’s most likely why I loved the game so much. I had the opportunity to do whatever I wanted and if I made a mistake the only consequence was to press “respawn” pretty simple right? At the time, yes, but as I matured and became curious, I wondered, could an online game possibly be the definition of life? Can something so many look for yet don’t find be right in the palms of my hands? Could Minecraft, a game that is made for children be the answer to a question asked for centuries?
As children begin to develop and grows, they all are curiosity and learning about the world around them that need to develop their thinking and learning more that included toys. Toys helps children to used their imagines and learning skills to play and imagines as heroes from the stories and children television show which Jean Piaget believe that toys can help and enhance the children’s cognitive development that is defined as the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. Piaget also stated that there are four stages in his cognitive development theory which are the Sensorimotor Stage-Birth through about 2 years where children will learn about

The types of games that children play change dramatically compared to early childhood. In addition to the activities that they already play, they start to strive for a challenge. Middle childhood is the time when children acquire skills such as reading and arithmetic. During this time children start to play games that are complicated and rule oriented. Because of these changes, children begin to play games based on strategy such as playing cards and other games that test their mind. They play games such as Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh. These card games require children to count, remember, and plan strategies. By playing these games, children begin to plan consciously, coordinate actions, evaluate their progress, and modify their plans and strategies based on reflection and evaluation.
It's always bothered me that Minecraft, a game that I love, is also filled with danger for young children. While they are able to express themselves in a world that is like an online version of Lego, they are also subject to cyberbullying from those their own age, a lack of self moderation from older players, and something called "griefing," which is when a player intentionally destroys what another player made simply to hurt their feelings. While I dealt with those myself, they can be major issues for many young video gamers. I wanted to give younger kids a chance to enjoy the game the way that I have, but in a safe space with less risk. This last summer, I volunteered to supervise a Minecraft room at the annual Princeton University alumni
Since the Early 70’s video games have been giving a bad name. Parents state that video games rot the minds of children and are influencing them do be violent. These accusations are far from the truth. In my research I found that there are many positive effects of gaming. Some of these effects are increased skills, creativity, general knowledge, and also help those in need. Parents can also take proper precautions and look into a game before buying it to see if it meets the criteria discussed in this paper.
There are several negative stereotypes associated with video games and those who play them; some of these may often hold true. However, there are plenty of learning opportunities in video games. While the direct purpose of some games is to educate or train, other games that do not directly have this purpose can still become a learning experience for the player. As Ntiedo Etuk, president of the educational video game company Tabula Digital said, “The traditional view of video games has been that they are distractions from the task of learning” (Electronic Education Report 1). Video games are an effective tool for learning and retaining skills both inside and outside the classroom environment. The basic cycle of game play--the introduction to the game, game play, collaboration, improvement of these between each round, and evaluation at the end of the game (Klievink and Janssen 159)--are nearly parallel to the traditional classroom learning cycle of reading a textbook or listening to a lecture, taking a quiz, studying, focusing on items missed on the quiz, and taking a test or exam. Within this cycle, there are many opportunities to develop and perfect both educational, life, and occupational skills.
Nowadays, video games are frequently accused of having detrimental effects on children and adolescents. The main arguments against video games are that they lead to addiction, that they provoke violence, and that they impair social development. Whether or not such claims are true has not been determined with certainty as scientific studies have produced contradictory results. Nevertheless, video games also have beneficial effects, which tend to be underrated, as they do not receive the same level of media coverage that adverse ones do, and are thus unknown to the general public. Some of the positive effects of playing video games on mental development include: stimulating analytical thinking, improving concentration, and encouraging planning and anticipation (“Video game controversies”).
Presently, video games aren’t merely toys that negatively influence the youth. They have become an alternative means for people to learn and train for work. Games teach values and essential information, and motivate its players to achieve goals. Soldiers and doctors benefit from video games as well. The collaboration of game developers and educators helps improve the quality of educational games. At present, as technology progresses, one can truly see that video games have become an important factor in learning.

American educational philosopher John Dewey once said, “ Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Education is the foundation of a permanent lifestyle. Parents should desire for their children to have educational stability to build upon. Any concerned parent should want nothing but the best for their child as they are well aware of the new forms of child entertainment. Since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, children in the United States have become subject to a new type of entertainment: video gaming (Nickson, 2010). Video games have become a big part of the average American household. Parents have begun to wonder how video games are affecting their children’s lifestyles.
Playing games on hand-held can be beneficial as it can be enjoyable but self-motivated way for children to learn and play “play is intrinsic to children’s quality of life, it is how they enjoy themselves. It is also a key component of a healthy lifestyle”. Children’s games on hand held devices such as iPad, iPhone and tablets give children access to a vast wealth of information which can develop children mind and knowledge surrounding a broad spectrum of subjects. Educational video games that are age appropriate have an inventive way of simulating a young child mind and sustaining a young child’s attention, while they are engaging in the practice of learning and problem-solving; for example a literacy letter game expands a young child’s language and literacy skill in a visual character and audio sounds as way of simulating the mind help the child retain the information in certain part of their brain. Then if games ask questions to challenge the child understanding further such as find the right letter?
Using creativity in the classroom will create strong students and help better them for the future. Now, students are just being taught to what is on the test. They do not learn how to be leaders, how to work in groups, people skills, or how to use their mind that is not just for memorizing the information. “The challenge now is to transform education systems into something better suited to the real needs of the 21st century. At the heart of this transformation there has to be a radically different view of human intelligence and of creativity” (Robinson K., 2011, p. 14). Using creativity and technology will allow the students to enjoy learning more. I noticed in my final project, that other students who weren’t education majors, saw this problem too. Many of them did not see creativity in a classroom, they felt that the school system was creating them into robots that taught them all how to think a certain way. Ken Robinson feels that, “we don’t grow into creativity; we grow out of it. Often we are educated out of it.” (2011, p. 49). Teachers should be teaching students how to be creative, and how to think on their own, so students will be able to go far in the future and succeed in any job they

Kids and teenagers have replaced riding there bike or playing with dolls for video games that connect people together all over the globe .We have all been there at one point and time, there are games for just about anybody. Video games are for all age’s yes us adults love to play them to. Playing video games are fun but not a lot of people realize the impact video games can have on the body physically and mentally. Excessive playing of video games can cause decreased social skills, deterioration in health and increased aggressive behavior.
