Small Acts of Kindness We live in a world today that is filled with so many negatives. When you think of a topic that matters or has a large impact on the world, what comes to mind: disease, terrorism, maybe poverty (pathos)? In contrast, I want to focus on one of the positive aspects of our world, because in a world where so many people are fixated on what is going wrong, we sometimes need to be uplifted by what is going right (parallelism). Surprisingly, something as simple as kindness can help turn our society in a more positive direction. I know that it may be hard to believe that kindness, something that takes little effort, can have such an effect (anticipate an objection), yet the impact of kindness can be incredible. The question is, if kindness is so easy, why isn’t our society filled with kindness(rhetorical question)? It is time to start. It is time to start complimenting people you pass in the hallways. It is time to start smiling at people who seem like they have had a rough day. It is time to start giving people a little bit of light in their day because you never know the impact it may have (anaphora). Kindness is easy, but it is meaningful and powerful. The effects that kindness can have on the receiver of the kind deed can be obvious, but studies have shown that kindness can benefit not only the receiver, but also the giver and observers of small acts of …show more content…
Everyone should regularly perform small acts of kindness because kindness spreads, has an extraordinary impact, and is scientifically proven to help the health and happiness of people who act kindly
In a short story called, “Thank you ma’am”, the author is trying to convey the theme, or message, of the importance of showing random acts of kindness towards others to help institute change. Mrs.J show one act of kindness when she washes his face. Another when she makes Roger food at her house. Mrs.J is kind and shows multiple examples throughout the story.
“Making a Difference” by June Callwood is an expository essay created to inspire the reader to make a change in the world around them, and to stand up for what they believe in. By just doing simple, positive things, people can make a huge impact on their lives and the lives of people around them. June Callwood, author of “Making a Difference”, changes the way many people see the world by describing scientific research and telling the stories of people who performed small, random acts of kindness that made a huge difference in people’s attitudes and the community around them.
Kindness can really make a difference in a person's attitude. In “A Christmas Carol”, the Cratchits and Scrooge's nephew Fred show kindness to Scrooge, even though Scrooge showed quite the opposite to them. Or in “Thank you M’am”, when Ms. Jones makes Roger food and gives him money to buy his shoes, instead of reporting him to the police. Even in “Little Things Are Big”, when Jesus decides to help people even if he has to face prejudism. These stories all show turning points, and these examples show
Positive interventions have previously been shown to have a positive effect on those involved in these types of activities. This investigation hypothesized that performing kind acts and noting gratitude would have a positive effect on happiness as measured by self-esteem. Further, it was predicted that differences would be observed based on several factors: experimental condition, gender, and religious commitment. Participants (N=30) from a large, northeastern, urban university participated in an experiment in which positive interventions were performed daily for one week. Pre-test and post-test measures of happiness were obtained. The findings confirmed an increase in happiness following both interventions. However, the differences predicted based on the factors investigated were not observed.
Human beings can be unpleasant, selfish and inconsiderate in their treatment of other people. Also, the manifestations of human aggression and egocentric attitude together with the mass destruction effected by War propelled Sigmund Freud to believe that people are aggressive by nature ( ). Humans habitually act to benefit other people in an act exemplified as prosocial behavior. Behaviors such as sharing personal resources, helping someone in need, volunteering time, effort, expertise and cooperating with others in an attempt to achieve a common goal ( ). Although people are often in need of help and act of kindness from another human being, however, the decision to help someone in need of aid is not a simple or straightforward decision as it might seem. 1) In your opinion, what causes people to turn a blind eye when they see others in danger?
“Sometimes it 's easy to walk by because we know we can 't change someone 's whole life in a single afternoon. But what we fail to realize it that simple kindness can go a long way toward encouraging someone who is stuck in a desolate place.” ~ Mike Yankoski
The virtue of kindness is not meek it is not niceness. Kindness holds firm to its foundation and values, but it does it in a way that is gentle. Kindness is not naïve, it is wise and discerning (Corey, 211). People confuse being nice as kindness because on the outside both are soft. The inside is what shows the difference. Niceness has no substance, it will go wherever society takes it. Kindness is different, it has a firm, solid center (Corey xv). The components of soft edges and firm centers make kindness warm and inviting and yet it remains deeply rooted to its core beliefs.
Psychology’s history is a relatively rough one and has only recently been considered a science. According to Martin Seligman (2000), negative psychology is psychology that deals with recovery and healing, using the disease model. This type of psychology has been popular in America since the end of World War II because of grants given to the industry during that time (Seligman, 2000). That time period left positive psychology, the psychology of developing ones skill and wellbeing and perfecting what is already there, overlooked and forgotten. But what psychologist have recently recognized is that positive psychology can be just as useful as negative psychology but it is a vastly under developed area. Thus many scientists have embraced the new frontier of positive psychology. I did a study on the subject of positive psychology. I took two life experiences, one that I found personal pleasure in, and another that wasn’t as fun at the time but benefited others and compared and contrasted the resulting feelings of happiness.
We as educators and parents want our children to grow up to be the best that they can be. Are we helping them when we tell that they are doing a good job on something or are we hurting them? Some research has shown that praising a child with words like “Good Job” or “Way to Go” is not helping them build their self-esteem or grow as individuals. We need to do more to help them grow as individuals and learners. According to Alfie Kohn (2001) “praise is a verbal reward” (p. 1). He states in his article “Five Reasons to Stop Saying Good Job” that praise is also controlling (Kohn, 2001) Have you ever been at a restaurant or out to local grocery store (or even said to your own kids) and hear if you will be good I will buy you a treat. Controlling? Yes controlling, but in the classroom do we use the same type of praise to get our students to do the same thing?
It's not about giving people things, but more so about one’s daily gestures and what one says to everyone each day. Being kind might be tough at times but in the end avoiding a rude comment is much better than saying one. There are so many ways to show others that being kind is important so don’t be afraid to try some out. Looking into it further, if everyone in the world was kind, we could avoid conflicts from small fights on the streets to world wars because everyone would be able to communicate and compromise with one another in a civilized
Indiana Gazette published an article “Teen helps…” explaining how strangers could eventually help you out tremendously. In my opinion, strangers can become a friend of yours, regardless of their age. However, we normally judge people before we get to know them, and they will always end up being a stranger. But this is not true for me, because I like to find out more information about someone before I assume anything about them. Alexis Baize, my classmate, who was a stranger but, is not anymore, because I have spent time on getting to understand how we have some similarities to one another based on where we are from.
My favorite act of kindness is complimenting someone, because it lights up their face and a wide smile usually spreads across their face. I know that when I’ve been complimented, it often makes
Aesop once stated, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” In this time period, many people around the globe only focus on their life, and they do not focus on lifting others up. Kindness is one word that can change lives, even when the person that shows kindness doesn’t even know the impact they are making. One act of kindness does not appear to be very important, but every act makes an impact. The world is full of hatred, war, and terrorism, but anybody can start to make a change. Some reasons that any act of kindness has an impact include other people needing positivity, the start of a chain reaction, and the benefit of other people in the world.
The most joyous season of the year in our house is Christmas. All the family gets together, gifts are exchanged and we give thanks for all that we have. This Christmas however, was one that I will never forget. If it weren't for the help of a stranger coming to my rescue, my holidays would have been ruined. He reminded me that a little kindness really does go along way.
