Discrimination and conformity are an ever present problem in society and in this essay I will examine the similarities between Tim Buton’s Edward scissor-hands and About school by anonymous. feature a main character who don’t conform to the rest of society. Edward Scissor-hands is a romance/fantasy film featuring the main character, Edward, who has spent his whole life with little to no company. Peg (a door to door makeup sales girl, with a stereotypical family consisting of a husband and two children) goes up to the castle like mansion and meets this peculiar character who literally has scissors for hands. She brings him down to the suburban area and at first the towns people are all intrigued by Edward, but that quickly changes and Edward
is forced back into castle. Burton uses a variety of camera angles throughout the film, the high camera angle is used a lot at the beginning and the end of the film to communicate the general concept of vulnerability and loneliness. The film includes flashbacks that slowly reveal the mystery of Edward's past, in the end viewers are showed about the death of the inventor that made Edward, and that want for hands meant nothing when it came to his father like figure dying. From beginning to end there is a very clear symbolic use of colour, Edward wears all black and lives in a castle like mansion alone, the people in the suburban area live in pastel coloured houses with bright clothing. Just taking a simple look at Edward in the town he stands out a lot, and that would have made it obvious to the townspeople that he fit in there. About school is a poem about a boy who is clearly in a state of depression, none understands his need for a creative outlet. At the beginning the boy has found painting as away to deal with his unique way of thinking, by the end he has been unhappily forced to conform. This poem has a very unique rhythm, the poem was written in third person but the writer was writing about himself, continuously in the poem he mentioned the word stiff many time putting extra emphasis on how he felt. The poem about school has effective way of showing how being different feels on the inside, to quote 'he always wanted to say things, but no one understood' no one understood this boy was alone, and simply couldn't deal with it
Edmund Perry’s maintaining the same personality toward both his peers from home and Exeter is a mental journey by itself. Dealing with racism at Exeter has put Edmund through a journey mentally trying to keep his temper and follow his personality and qualities, although the racism finally bothered him to a maximum point that Edmund change. Edmund has experienced a journey by altering environments drastically from predominantly black neighborhood to a predominantly white school that might have strength his personality. At Exeter, Eddie was the strong student that he showed to be in Junior High. Edmund tells us a testimony of Herney, “He was, said those who had taught and coached him, matured for his age, serious, studious, determined and not at all in awe of the strange new world that was Phillips Exeter.”(114) I maintain the same qualities that his teachers and coaches saw him as. I also see a similarity in the way we use these qualities, to excel in education as Edmund did. After a situation at Exeter, explained in the book, Edmund says that “Eddie didn 't let any group or clique tie him down, which is kind of amazing… He could be with black people, and he could be with white people and he could be with himself.” (165) I connect strongly to this feeling or way of life. I feel as though, I do not need to have a certain group or clique to be with, all I need is myself. I am not racist nor judgemental so can be with and enjoy myself with any group nor clique. As the student begins his essay, he points out that Sammy is part of the lower class structure. He is an “eighteen-year-old boy who is working as a checkout clerk in an A&P in a small New England town five miles from the beach” (2191). In human society, there are only a select few that choose to avoid conformity which makes them an individual in being that they can control their minds and make decisions up for themselves. A famous sociologist, Solomon Asch, conducted the Asch experiment which was a line experiment to see if people would change their answers just to fit in with the group of people around them. Astonishingly, the results proved that over 75 percent of people conform to society to fit in. The story begins with Jodee’s description of how she was victimized in a 4th grade Catholic grammar school; coming to the defense of deaf children that were being treated cruelly. She supplied the school officials with names and was labeled a “tattletale.” No one would talk to her, recess was spent in anguish, and she would find garbage and spoiled food in her book bag. As she progressed into 5th grade some of the social atmosphere began to shift in subtle but profound ways. Being accepted into a clique was all that mattered. Instead of being admired for class participation, as in earlier years she was laughed at and labeled as “teacher’s pet.” She said the rules were simple “shun or be shunned—if you weren’t willing to go along with the crowd, you would become the reject.”
A distinct conscience is formed by the values and desires of one’s unique identity. However, common beliefs of societal standards can influence conscientious desires. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces a young girl named Scout, who learns about the difference between social conformity and human conscience. As we take a look at two different essays by two different authors’ John Gatto and Alfie Kohn, both highlight what’s wrong within our educational system in today’s society. As John Gatto explores the concept if schools are really as necessary as they’re made out to be; Alfie Kohn analyzes the non-importance of letter grades within our schools. Although both essays are fairly different, they still pose some similarities in relation to the educational system in today’s society.
The 1950’s have received a reputation as an age of political, social and cultural conformity. This reputation is rightfully given, as with almost every aspect of life people were encouraged to conform to society. Conforming is not necessarily a negative thing for society, and the aspects of which people were encouraged to conform in the 1950’s have both negative and positive connotations.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
When life becomes overwhelming during adolescence, a child’s first response is to withdraw from the confinement of what is considered socially correct. Individuality then replaces the desire to meet social expectations, and thus the spiral into social non-conformity begins. Is there anything that you’re hiding that you’re even afraid to tell your best friend? Just walking in the halls and not knowing who you can talk to about your situation due to the pressures from society that may restrict you from acting the way you want or do what pleases you in order to meet social standards of status, success, gender roles, etc. It can cause us to lie in order to meet society's expectations and feel dignified or proud in society. In the text, the Socs and Greasers are put into roles with specific limitations, which impacted their lives accordingly. These standards for each group come from ideas relating to maintaining reputations. This could range from being the poor kids with turbulent, misfortunate lives to the wealthy kids who got to live a life of opportunity.
