American philosopher Robert Maynard Hutchins once said “The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.” I believe this to be true; Without education we couldn’t learn to read, write, or use higher order thinking. Education helps u also manage time by having certain deadlines for assignments; which will help with our careers when we get into the “real world”. education is suppose to prepare us for the future ahead of us. When I first started college I was nervous freshman that was homeschooled all of her life. I never been in an actual classroom, never took notes before, I didn’t even know how to cite properly. I was jumping into a new situation in my life and I was terrified. When I got into college …show more content…
When I first started working when I was 16 I just wanted to make money. I never tried to work too hard or try to make myself better. But, throughout my college years you can see how I’ve grown. I learned how to write a proper cover letter or how to make a resume. During college I ended up changing jobs a few times and every time I still go back to my notes in writing a cover letter and I still even use almost the same resume I made back in my freshman year of college. General Education courses give you the fundamentals to succeed out in work force. Especially by using the four skills that professors try to teach us: Managing Information, Higher Order thinking, Valuing, and Communication. Without these basic skills we can’t become the greatest versions of ourselves
I use the four skills right now with my job as a Customer Service Representative. I tend to use all four even with one customer. I manage information by listening and writing down notes while the customer is taking so I make sure I clearly understand what they are trying to tell me. I use higher order thinking coming up with a solution on how to fix what the customer was having a problem with. I compare and contrast the situation with other situations I’ve dealt with in the past by using my valuing skill. And lastly, I communicated with my customer on how I’m going to help fixed the problem they were
Robert Leamnson’s essay “Learning (Your First Job)” effectively proposes the importance of learning by suggesting ways of making notes, studying, and doing assignments. Leamnson cannot stress it enough, how learning will not be accomplished unless you want to do it. If you do not have the want of learning then there is no point in doing it. High school education is so much different than your post-secondary education. The material that is being learned in the college classes is materials that will be useful for your later career. This essay has given me a better understanding of to how and why I should take college classes
Doing something you’re good at, and learning the different skills that will help you better yourself in the job are more important that what you could learn in a school. College isn’t for everyone, but you can learn just as much without it. Nothing beats, “The satisfaction of being good at what does for a living” (Murray 237). Education is important, it’s been taught since before Kindergarten that a good education will open more doors. And that’s true, however there are also a number of things that you learn through hard work that can’t be taught, instead “work smart...make every move count” (Rose
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. It will help people stand up, be a leader, and take charge to make the world a better place for everyone. That gallant leader will argue against the fallacy, lies,
While many first year college students are over stressed and constantly in a state of panic or fear, I was able to teach my brain how to relax and keep stress to a minimum. It is because of this that my first year of college has been relatively easier then
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Through the completion of my graduate program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and found valuable in my seventh grade English classroom. My outlook on student learning and my empathy towards students has also been positively affected by the program. These learning opportunities have led me to become a better educator both inside and outside of the classroom.
For my presentation I decided to talk about college education. I decided to pick this topic because it’s something that I feel very passionate about when I talk to my fellow classmates. Many students talk on how college is expensive, but don’t realize the benefits that come with higher education. I wanted to show how free college education could effect the future and the mind of our students. The main reason that I chose this topic was to share that struggle is part of the process to success. Like some actors say in the movies “no pain no gain”
As I started my first day at college I was very nervous just because of the new environment, new people, and the fact that I was living on campus. In highschool I always said my plans after high school would be for me to go to a four year university, but of course never thought it would happen. But it happened, I knew going to college was going to be the best thing for be to be successful in the future. Getting used to the new environment & being around new people was difficult, but by the first two weeks of college I felt like I knew everyone already.
When I began this exploration, these two words: pedagogy and andragogy, my first thought was here I go again with learning about pedagogy. What in the world is andragogy? To much my surprise, I learned the history behind pedagogy; instead of, the theories that are supposed to work in the classroom. I never heard of andragogy until I started my research; when I started reading about pedagogy and andragogy, a thought entered my brain. The old question, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” “Which came first pedagogy or andragogy?” Does a student begin to learn from someone else, (pedagogy) or does child begin learning when they are self-directed (andragogy)
Education is the key to a successful and fulfilling life. The purpose is to give each child an equal opportunity to achieve his or her goals. I believe that the overall purpose of education is to prepare for the future.
Education will help you grow as an individual because the more knowledge you have the better understanding you will have in any given problem that will come your way. It will give you self satisfaction and will boost your self confidence. As an individual I know it will help me in a lot of aspects in my life. It will give me a financial stability because I will be able to land a good job and a high paying salary. I will learn how to spend my money and will learn how to invest it wisely. The more education I have the more respect and acknowledgement I will get from people. Knowledge is really important that is why we need to take it seriously. It is the strong weapon you can have to conquer this complex world. If you have a good education nobody can fool you and you will not tolerate any mistreatment from people. It will give you a better views in life if you are well educated.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
The two philosophies that I have chosen to write about for my Education Philosophy Paper includes progressivism and existentialism. Progressivism focuses on the child rather than the subject matter. Due to society always changing, new ideas are important to make the future better than the past for students learning. This educational philosophy stresses that students should test ideas by active experimentation. Learning is rooted in the questions of learners that arise through experiencing the world. Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one 's education. Existentialism is a highly subjective philosophy that stresses the importance of the individual and emotional commitment to living authentically. It emphasizes individual choice over
