Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas was a French artist, some people would refer to him as the expert of drawing the human figure in motion. He was known as an Impressionists, and was different from all the other artist of his type. Edgar Degas was a person who, at certain times, brashly defied propriety and common social practice. Although he could be the nicest person, at times he would go into rages during social gatherings, becoming hostile with the people who disagreed with his ways and opinions. Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834, at Saint-Georges in Paris. His father was a French banker, and his mother was an American from New Orleans. While Degas was growing up his idol was the painter. He began his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres.
After studying there he moved on and started classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1854, he left and went to Italy. For 5 years he stayed there and studied Italian art, mainly works. Edgar Degas was known as an Impressionist. The Impressionist were artist who exhibited their works of art in independent shows from 1874 to 1886. It was the common desire to make an open forum for artist to show their work that united the group.
The word "Impressionist" was created by the critic Louis Leroy after seeing paintings in the first Impressionists exhibition in April of 1874. The name that Leroy gave his article in the French periodical was Charivari "Exhibition of the Impressionists" and sarcastically protected the new style of painting that ignored details, bared brushstrokes, and put unblended colors beside each other. Just like most of the French public, Leroy did not take into consideration the works by Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar as art that deserved serious attention. In 1859 he returned to Paris. There he painted portraits of family and friends and many historical subjects, where he used both classical and romantic styles.
In the late 1860’s he switched to contemporary themes, painting both theatrical scenes and portraits with big emphasis on social and intellectual implications of props and setting. Around 1868 Degas began to get recognized as an artist. During the early 1870’s, the female became Degas’s favorite theme. In his studio he sketched from a live model and put poses together in groupings that illustrated rehearsal and performance scenes. In 1872 he visited some of his relatives in Louisiana, he painted The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans, which is his only picture that was aquired by a museum in his lifetime.

It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.

He and his family belonged to Peter Blow and his family. Dred started his first job, to take care of the Blow children who weren’t much younger than him, when he was four.
Edgar Degas was born July 19th, 1834 in Paris, France. Born into wealth, Degas became well educated throughout his youth. He studied Law at the University of Paris, due to his father’s desire for him to achieve financial security on his own. However, his love for art was ever-present, even at a young age. He turned his bedroom into his own personal studio by age 18. During his time at the University of Paris, Degas met well-renowned artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who encouraged him to pursue his talent. Shortly after, Degas was accepted to the premiere Ecole des Beaux-arts ('School of Fine Arts'). Post attendance, Degas traveled to Italy for three years to continue his artistic studies. Degas life was nowhere near perfect, when he was 13 years old, his mother passed away. This caused him tremendous heartache, due to the fact that his mother was a lover of the arts; she was an opera singer and often gave recitals in their home (“Edgar Degas”). She inspired and encouraged his artistic ways.

Although professor Sapolsky’s research ended with the death of the Keekorok troop, there was a time frame, when the last fleeting moments closed in, that he witnessed the death of aggression and saw the ushering in of kindness and tolerance amongst each other. This epiphany was imperative to Sapolsky’s understanding that nothing is concrete; there is always some way to branch out and make a better environment.
The 1973 Roe v. Wade is one of the most controversial cases in United States in not only the abortion issue, but also in American government. In this paper, I will discuss the case, argument, the decision, and the significance of Roe V. Wade. The Historic decision made by the United States Supreme Court in 1973 legalized abortion on a federal level. As the federal court- particularly the circuit courts and the Supreme Court have become more important in determining American public policies. (Greenberg 435) Now more than thirty years later people all over the country are trying to overturn the decision as well as striving to keep in intact.
Dred Scott was a slave in the slave state of Missouri. In 1834, he was taken to Illinois and the Wisconsin Territories, which was considered free land under the Missouri Compromise. Sanford was not Scott's owner. Mrs. Emerson arranged to sell Dred Scott to her brother John Stanford. Though his name was misspelled as "Sanford",it became attached to the legal case. Stanford was left in charge of the ongoing legal battle. Scott fought to buy freedom for himself and his family, In 1856, he filed a law suit in the court of Missouri for his freedom. Abortion is the method of removing a fetus or an embryo from the mother. Prior to 1970s, states had the power to decide the right to abort over the pregnant women. This situation continued until the Roe v. Wade case, which changed the whole country. It started in Texas, where there was a law stated that abortion was not allowed to be performed in any circumstances, except of life-threatening conditions. A Texas woman, who went by Jane Roe, challenged the law, stating that the abortion right is a “fundamental right”. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, which made this the first time ever in the history to recognize the right of privacy against the compelling interest of the states on abortion (Pearson Education, Inc.). In the case of Roe v. Wade (1973), with a decision of 7 to 2 majority vote, the Supreme Court upheld the right to abort. The Supreme Court stated that the First, Fourth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments protected the right to abort against the state laws. Henri Matisse was born December 31st, 1869 to two storeowners, Emile and Heloise Matisse. His father wanted him to be a lawyer, so later on in life he could takeover the family business. They sent him to Henri Martin Grammar School where he studied to be a lawyer. There was a hint of artist in Henri because while working as a lawyer’s assistant he took up a drawing course (Essers 7). It was for curtain design but it seemed to be destiny for a lawyer’s assistant to take up such a distant hobby as drawing.
Impressionism is very pretty and complicated. It was from 1860 to 1910. Monet is the perfect Impressionist. Impressionism had its basic tenants. Their subject matter was the middle upper class, the city, and leisurely activities. They painted on en plein air which means they painted outdoors. They painted in snow, rain, storm, just in order to record directly the effects of light and atmosphere. They painted with strokes and touches of pure color by using a great deal of white and rarely black. They recorded the shifting play of light on the surface of objects and the effect light has on the eye without concern for the physicality of the object being painted. They were influenced by Japanese art and photography. One of Monet’s works is titled Water Lilies. The medium of this work is oil on canvas. Monet is an impressionist. He puts up pure color just describe the water. He said, when you go out paint, the impression of the scene not the exact scene.
In the mid- to late 1800s, a group of artists challenged the conventions that governed artistic expression. These artists, later known as the Impressionists, were initially seen as vulgar and rebellious. It took years for the public and artistic community to accept them and their work. They set up their canvases outside, using wide brush strokes and vibrant colors as they focused on expression over realism.

By 1965, abortions had been outlawed in the U.S., although they continued illegally; about one million abortions per year were estimated to have occurred in the 1960s.
