Annabel Lee doesn’t really follow a specific literary structure; however, it is very similar to an anapest and ballad in structure and has many interesting points to discuss. It is similar in structure to a anapest because it follows in general a rhythm of da-da-dum. On the other hand, the utilization of repeated words and phrases to create a mournful effect is a feature of a ballad, which is what Edgar Allan Poe claimed it to be. Poe is able to skillfully dictate the pace of the poem as though if it were climbing throughout. The stanzas get longer and the rhyme scheme becomes more complicated, creating an increasing sense of drama within the poem.
The rhyme scheme is one that is similar throughout the whole poem, but with slight variations. It almost always follows an ab*b*b... form, deviating only slightly in the last two stanzas. Also, the phrases are in the

This is easily supported through both internal and external elements as they all are with the purpose of either showing how much he loves Annabel Lee, describing Annabel Lee as beautiful, or dramatizing the poem further. However, there is room for interpretation as to who exactly this Annabel Lee is. Most claim that it is his wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe, which is supported by the fact that they were in fact married at a young age, matching the phrase “I was a child and she was a child”. However, some others have claimed that it is a long lost love from the past that Edgar Allan Poe was unable to marry. I personally believe it is his wife as all the evidence given in the poem matches her situation perfectly, such as the fact that they were in fact married at a young age, matching the phrase “I was a child and she was a
Repetition In Poe’s poem, “Annabel lee”, repetition is a poetic device that is used throughout the whole poem. The name “Annabel Lee” is repeated in every one of the six stanzas. By repeating the name, the author emphasises the importance of “Annabel Lee”. She is the main focus of the poem.
Some believe that Annabel Lee was written for his wife, but others think that the love of his life, Sarah Emira Royster, that he was parted from as a youth of 18, was the true recipient for the beautiful but morbid poem. . Mr. Poe was scheduled to wed the same Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton just days before his death. “The significance of “Annabel Lee” to their relationship may, however, be reflected in the account of his desire to have it published for the first time with their wedding announcement in the local papers. Since Poe died just ten days before they would have been married, the poem was instead first printed at the end of his obituary written by Rufus Griswold in the New York Daily Tribune” (Poe Museum)
In "Annabel Lee", a young man is mourning the death of a beautiful young lady. Even though the woman had died quite some time ago, the man is still in melancholy. He misses her terribly and constantly thinks of how she was she was tragically taken from him by the angels who were jealous of their love, and by her family who didn't think the he himself was capable of bringing her to her final resting place. He loved Annabel Lee more than anyother human can love another. The following quote tells the reader how much he loves her and shows that he would do anything for her, even if that means sleeping by her tomb, each and every night. "And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side of my darling, my life and my bride, in her sepulchre there by the sea, in her tomb by the side of the sea."
Annnabel Lee is a poem of two lovers, in their own world, living a perfect life. This poem reflects Poe 's own pain, in which Annabel Lee dies, and her lover is heartbroken.
The author of the poem relies a multiple combination of uses of figurative language including using alliteration, assonance, and usage of parallel structure. Alliteration was presented multiple times through the poem, with the usage of musical rhythm and the flow of the overall writing. The usage of alliteration made every stanza stand out to create a flow with reading the poem. The first type of alliteration that is present in the poem is the repeated sounds in the beginning
Edgar Allan Poe draws people not only in his works, but his life. In many of Poe's most famous stories and poems, there are remnants of his childhood and past experiences. For instance, take Poe's poem “Annabel Lee.” This poem is clearly about Edgar Allan Poe and his relationship with Virginia Clemm, his deceased wife. Many similarities can be found between Virginia Clemm and Annabel Lee. To begin with, Annabel Lee and Virginia Clemm are both in a deep love with their partners. Also, both girls are described as young. Finally, the two both die and end up with their partners in their tombs.
The poem opened up with a fairy tale line and right off the bat you had the idea that it was going to be about the narrator sharing his love. Not to mention, it was a poem of rhyming to help make the reader feel a type of way. This poem was written after the death of his beloved wife, Virginia Clemm (the woman who married him at the age of thirteen) so it is most likely based off of her and the love that he had for her. Love is the main theme in the poem and the love that Annabel Lee and the narrator shared starting in their childhood. In the poem, Poe demonstrates that even after Annabel’s death that their love was too strong to be destroyed by the angels or demons. Just about everything that he sees reminds him of Annabel, the stars, moon and he lies by her tomb at night by the sea. Loving her wasn’t complicated at all for him, even when he was known to struggle with relationships throughout his whole life. Even though she is dead, he makes us believe that he can still see her bright eyes and that they will soon meet again in the future. The one line that caught my eye the most about their love is this, “But our love it was stronger by far than the love of those who were older than we—“ (Poe). Their love was said to be so strong that even the older and wiser people couldn’t understand the strength of their love. The main purpose of this poem was to show all of the outsiders that there was nothing that could ever come in-between their love, no matter if she was dead or alive. Their souls will forever be united until the day that they will meet
“Annabel Lee” is based on a couple in a kingdom by the sea and the girl, who’s name is Annabel Lee, dies ("Shmoop.com"). So Annabel’s partner is reminiscing about the memories he once shared Annabel. However, the partners’ tone of voice slowly changes throughout the poem from a caring and happy voice to a sad longing voice as if to say Annabel’s name would somehow bring her back ("Shmoop.com"). Throughout the poem, it is evident that the theme of the poem is that the speaker was in love with Annabel Lee. Furthermore, in line 9 it says, “But we loved with a love that was more than love” (Poe) which is basically stating the couple loved each other so much that they felt something that was more than love. The speaker uses symbols to help the reader visualize his point. Symbols such as a chilling wind, a highborn kinsman, and winged seraphs that apparently “took” Annabel Lee from him ("Shmoop.com"). The poem of “Annabel Lee” may be a tragic love story, but in the end it is a very interesting piece of literature written by Edgar Allan
Poe writes in his poem, “I was a child and she was a child,”. (7) This quotation could be taken two ways. The first way, and the most common way is thinking that he is saying that they were young. Analyzing it further, the quotation can show that he means him and Annabel Lee had an innocent love. Early in the poem Poe writes, “That a maiden there lived whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee,” (3-4). Reading this, the reader may think that Annabel Lee is widely known and maybe even famous. Annabel probably wasn't famous, because he thinks so highly of her, he thinks that everyone knows who she is. He thinks to himself that Annabel Lee is so beautiful and amazing, how could anyone not know who she is? Also, in the beginning of line 3 Poe states that she is a maiden. Being a maiden, she is probably a virgin. Now, going back a little, when Poe writes, “I was a child and she was a child,” (7), what he really means by this is that their love was innocent. It was an emotional love, not a physical one. This could be used against the claim being stated in paragraph 1, meaning that they love each other so much that they don't even need the
The poem “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allen Poe is a beautiful story that outlines events that happened between the speaker and his love. The story paints a mental picture of a love that is so strong that angels become jealous and take Annabel Lee away from the speaker, but even though she is gone, his love for her never ended. The story is full of imagery that leads to the central message of the story, which is love.
The poem hints to various women in the narrator’s life and most significantly a young beautiful lady who dies too suddenly in her youth. The poem celebrates Annabel Lee and his’s childhood sentiments which are somehow consistent with the ethics of the passionate era. During the 18th and 19th centuries most idealists perceived maturity as an exploitation of purer predispositions of childhood and chose nature over the society as it was considered to be in a desirable inherent state. For that reason, Poe considers the love between Annabel and narrator to be complete and perpetual compared to that of mature people. Annabel shows no signs of complexity in her emotions that may end up darkening or complicating her relationship. In this case, she
Starting in the first stanza we see that Annabel Lee is referred to specifically as a maiden. Maidens are unmarried women, and the word is often associated with virginity. From this we can conclude that Poe wants to emphasize Annabel Lee’s purity. The word choice in “maiden” lets the reader know early on that this poem is not about lust, but rather love and the genuine connection that comes with it. In the third stanza, as previously discussed, Poe goes out of his way to emphasize that both the narrator and Annabel Lee were children. However, the word choice of “child” is interesting because it is ambiguous whether it is literal or not. By choosing to portray the two lovers as children, Poe once again enforces the themes of purity, innocence, and virginity that children and maidens have in common. Poe wants the reader to understand that there is no sin between the two lovers, only an undying love. Knowing this it is now easy to see why Poe asserts that the angels would be jealous of their love, as the angels would believe only such a pure love should be reserved for God. Continuing to analyze the theme of holiness and purity, even more interesting details can be found in the word choice of sepulchre. A sepulchre is simply a tomb, however the word sepulchre itself is more often associated with religious
Most people agree that Edgar Allan Poe wrote "Annabel Lee" about his departed wife, Virginia Clemm, who died of tuberculosis two years earlier. Some critics, however, contend that in the seventh line of the poem he states, "I was a child and she was a child," and he certainly was no child in 1836 at twenty-seven when he married his thirteen-year-old bride. Maybe the poem is about an earlier love, or perhaps it is purely fictional, but addressing Annabel Lee as his "life and [his] bride" in line thirty-eight and writing it two years after his beloved young wife's death, it is seems logical that it is indeed written about her and is simply embellished with a bit of poetic license.
It can be concluded that the speaker is a caring and loving gentleman. The narrator of the poem is a young gentleman whom can also be perceived as Edgar Allan Poe himself. “That a maiden there lived whom you may know/ By the name of Annabel Lee” (line 3, 4). The poem is about a person loving a woman; therefore it is positively obvious and apparent that the narrator is a gentleman. There are also repetitions of the words “I” and “my” throughout the whole poem, which confirms that the narrator is in fact Edgar Allan Poe himself. “And, so all the night-tide, I lie down by the side/ Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride” (line 38, 39). The use of the words “I” and “my” supports the theory that the person narrating the poem is Edgar Allan Poe. It is also visible that the speaker is very sad and emotional about the loss of his wife. The narrator is having a difficult time getting over the death of Annabel Lee which is apparent in the last stanza. He still sleeps by her even though she is
The biography includes where Poe grew up and how his lifestyle were. Through research and sources, I found out that Poe lived a hard life. He was in a lot of debts with no money. Not only was that, “Annabel Lee” known as a romanticism which was also established during the European times. This poem was one of my favorite.
