Edgar Allan Poe, a writer in the gothic era, was known for his eerie writing style that was influenced by his childhood. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 but before he was even 3 years old, his father and mother, both professional actors, died. As he grew up, Poe was later forced to leave the University of Virginia because his foster parent refused to pay his gambling debts. Poe’s relationship with them deteriorated and Poe moved to Boston and started editing literary journals. It was from that point on that he started establishing himself as a poet, a short-story writer, and an editor. Nowadays, Poe works have become favorites of many students and adults. His unique writing style appeals to a wide variety of people. Some of his works include The Tell-Tale Heart, Annabel Lee, The Raven, and The Cask of Amontillado. In addition, Poe illustrates his sinister imagery to provide a specific to show his tone when writing the story. An example is a poem: “The Raven” where a man is depressed and trying to forget about his pain. The Raven represents despair and how the character feels after his love left. “”(Poe). Poe is using the Gothic elements of an unreliable narrator and darkness to warn readers that there is a hidden darkness residing inside Montresor. Moreover, the connection of Montresor to the serpent brings not only the Gothic component of evil, but also suggests a connection to the devil; also, Poe does not merely use a serpent, but a fanged serpent in reference to Montresor, which means that the serpent is venomous. Using the venomous serpent to portray Montresor in the coat of arms suggests that Montresor’s strike against Fortunato will be a deadly one. Without the use of Gothic elements to create a dark and suspenseful narrative, this story of revenge might be mistaken for a tale of justice. Removal of the Gothic elements in “the Cask of Amontillado,” would greatly reduce the quality of the work and possibly change the interpretation of the short story.
