Edgar Allan Poe does practice literature within the definitive use of the intrinsic and variety of qualities that possess the many and perpetually updated definitions assigned to the word ‘literature’. Poe is an artist of words. He uses aesthetic, creative works of fiction to tell stories of drama and often horror. Poe’s’ literary genius is translated most commonly through his ingenious poetry and short stories. Consequently, it is his tendency to lace parts of his own personal life and views into his storytelling that causes critics to downplay the true art of the work by Poe. “By promoting identification across divisions of class, gender, race, nation and age, books may promote a ‘fellow-feeling’ that discourages struggle.” (Culler 40). This literary attempt to discourage struggle by the social issue and moreover of the individual is in fact an aspect practiced by Poe himself in his short story. Montresor struggles not because of his social class or a gender sociological perspective, but because of who he allows himself to be as an individual and how he submits to being treated by others. It is not at cause of any form of unfair, prejudiced behaviour by Fortunato that causes the rage inside of Montresor but his personal reaction to insult. It is in fact Montresor as an individual. His works and ideas are singular and not of any prior excerpt of another “literary theorist,” (Culler 20) but created and conjured up by the author by himself. Poe inspires an array of intertextuality in future literature enthusiasts, including music artists and English literature specialists. The combining and inspiration of literary ingenious does not stem towards Poe, but come from the artist himself. Therefore, from his macabre and spooky style in his literary works, Poe has inspired future illustrious intertextual contexts such as the Gothic inspiration of music legends such as Michael Jackson who drew inspiration from dark and twisted tales such as “The Cask of Amontillado,” whose grim and creepy aura appear in famous media performances such as the ‘Thriller’ music video by deceased King of Pop, Michael Jackson and furthermore artists.. The intertextuality of Poe’s’ works have even continued in direct connection to the Bostonian writer, whereas films and TV documentaries have been made and popularized in the honour of the literary artist, Edgar Allan
