Eddard Stark is an honorable man, and he shows as much in the novel A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. However, there is one person in the novel that contradicts this. It is his bastard son Jon Snow. Jon Snow is a child born in the south out of wedlock, and this is very unusual because at the time, he was to be married to Catelyn Tully. Multiple times in the novel, this blight is discussed by everyone but nothing concrete is offered up about it. We are given no explanation as to why he has relations with this mysterious southern woman. Robert Baratheon, who is Eddard’s old friend, even says,”She must have been a rare wench if she could make Lord Eddard Stark forget his honor, even for an hour.”(pg.33) This leads one to believe that this woman was very special in some way. Eddard never goes into detail about Jon’s mother. Eddard is very suspicious about the nature of his father figure Jon Arryn’s death throughout the novel. It is stated that Jon Arryn died of a sudden illness and the maester in charge of healing him even attests to as much, but Eddard is doubtful. He believes that Jon was poisoned, and is proven right by Varys the eunuch. Eddard still has to find out who wanted Arryn dead and why. “Why? Why now? Jon Arryn had been Hand for fourteen years. What was he doing that they had to kill …show more content…
him?”(pg.343) Varys is unhelpful and vague in his response, simply stating, “Asking questions,”(pg.343) and leaving the room. This is the start to unravelling one of the main conflicts of the book, after all, the only reason that Eddard is Hand of the King is because Jon Arryn is dead. Jon Arryn’s death is a sign of corruption in the royal court, and it spells nothing but trouble for the Starks. Eddard has to decide whether or not to go down south as he knows that Robert is going to ask him to. He also has to consider his wife’s request that he bring his daughters Sansa and Arya so that they may be wed. He is very reluctant to do so, as he believes that their eldest daughter Sansa is still too young and that the south is very far from Winterfell. This choice affects the entirety of the rest of the novel. This is the start of a series of events that eventually lead to the death of Eddard Stark and the beginning of a civil war in Westeros. Jon Snow has decided to join the Night’s Watch because he wants to make a name for himself beyond being Eddard Stark’s bastard. Tyrion Lannister is familiar with being ostracised, though it’s for a different reason: he is a dwarf. Tyrion goes up to the Wall with Jon and before he leaves he gives him some advice, “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”(pg.57) This advice allows Jon and the reader to see Tyrion as something more than a dwarf. The final line in the chapter even says, “When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king.” (pg.57) The imagery only heightens how Tyrion is seen. Tyrion is acting as an older mentor figure to Jon despite their animosity towards each other in the beginning. Tyrion is being the bigger man in this case. Throughout the novel, the distinctions between the northern and southern parts of Westeros are emphasised. This keeps being brought up because it is foreshadowing the inevitable split between all the houses. For the most part, the northerners will stick together, and the southerners will be somewhat united. The southerners will likely ally themselves with the Lannisters in order to keep control and wealth, and the northerners will rally behind the Starks. These two houses originally were reluctant allies in Robert’s Rebellion against the house Targaryen. Robert’s Rebellion is an event that is frequently referenced throughout the novel.
It is a crucial event in understanding how the realm is ruled in present time. Robert’s Rebellion signified the end of the Targaryen dynasty, and it also showed the near elimination of the Targaryen house as a whole. This novel foreshadows the beginning of a possible new ruling house. It illuminates the beginning of a civil war that will divide the whole realm, while also describing the storm that is looming just overhead much further north by the Wall. Robert’s Rebellion also put many new players into the spotlight, like Jaime Lannister, who receives his nickname
Kingslayer.
Literary villains are all around us. For instance, Voldemort from Harry Potter and Darth Vader from Star Wars. What makes a villain? They will go through anyone or damage anything to reach their goal. No matter how small or how tall they are, anyone can be a villain. One of the worst literary villains is Erik Fisher from Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor. He is a liar and a thief. Those traits are what makes the best villains. Throughout the book, Erik shows that he is a villain through his vile and offensive behavior, his need for power, and his insanity.
He probably didn’t intend to kill JonBenet but out of great anger and jealousy it happened.
The main character in the book is General Robert E. Lee. He was the commander of the Confederate Army and was one of the most famous men in the South. He led his army through many victories, and was known for coming up with very good strategies that he shared with his army. General James Longstreet, Lee’s second in command, was aware of the new nature of warfare and understood that military tactics have to change with new technology. Longstreet was Lee’s most important general and tended to be very stubborn at times, but respected General Lee.
...ficant because it further showed the growing discontent of local Virginian farmers of the Royal rule. Some may consider this the first American Revolution but I consider this a small rebellion that would foreshadow a greater problem between American and British relations if nothing was fixed. At this point in time the amount of slaves would significantly increase in Virginia. The planter elite saw it necessary to set up a social order that specifically saw African Americans as inferior. They were afraid of another uprising among the common interests of poor whites and blacks. Therefore, the years of 1675 and 1676 proved to be very significant in forming the dynamics the colonial culture after this point as well as raising a stronger awareness of discontent for increasing British rule.
Will Allen (2013), a multi-talented, meticulous man who turned his profession from a basketball player to a professional salesman and then finally, into an urban farmer, in his book THE GOOD FOOD REVOLUTION precisely elucidates the significance of being patient in everyday life and how farming played an important role in teaching him this extremely important life skills.
Writing a story is pretty difficult. Writing a short story is even harder, there is so much that has to be accomplished; in both commercial and literary fiction! The plot, the structure, whether it has a happy, unhappy, or indeterminate ending. There must be artistic unity, chance, coincidence, rising action, climax, falling action. Most importantly there must be characterization. Characters make the story! “anyone can summarize what a person in a story has done, but a writer needs considerable skill and insight into human beings to describe convincingly who a person is” [page 168]
...ture, hardened man, but also help develop much of the theme of the novel, which deals with the love that exists between Henry and Catherine and the horrors of the ensuing war all around them.
He is expected to be noble, gallant, chivalrous, and all the other stereotypes one might find when reading about a prince and future king. None of these words can be used to honestly describe him though. Instead he threatens to tattle on people to his mother when he is upset with them, and he threatens and goads people on, fully aware that they can’t retaliate without major consequences. He does this with Robb Stark when they are practicing swordplay, and with Mykah and Arya in the woods. He acts confident and powerful until he feels threatened: “Joffrey made a scared, whimpery sound as he looked up at her. “No,” he said, “don’t hurt me. I’ll tell my mother’”(Martin 126). By threatening to tell his mother, he takes the consequences of his actions off of himself and places them on those that he wronged. He knows that no matter what he does, his mother will always take his side, even if the other person is right. The other person will often get a severe punishment, much like the Starks did when they were commanded to kill Sansa’s direwolf, Lady, in place of
Men are seen as superior, while women are the inferior sex. The two are sorted into their specific gender roles as they were many years ago, and still are today. Jobs and duties are especially gendered in the show. For example, men are seen as warriors and are very strong. Women, on the other hand, are only meant to cook the food and clean the house, or in the case of highborn women, provide heirs for their husband. Noble women’s opinions are not completely trusted the way the men’s’ opinions are: “My mother wishes me to let Lord Eddard join the Night 's Watch. Stripped of all titles and powers, he would serve the realm in permanent exile. And my Lady Sansa has begged mercy for her father. But they have the soft hearts of women. So long as I am your king, treason shall never go unpunished. Sir Ilyn, bring me his head” (“Game of Thrones”). In this particular scene, Lord Eddard is to be shown mercy so long as he swear featly to King Joffrey. His mother, Queen Regent Cersei had previously advised him to not execute the prisoner, as it would start a war that he would not be able to win. Nevertheless, the King believes that the opinions of the women are not valid and executes Eddard, starting a war. In this society, gender roles are very divided, but not as much as they used to be: “We typically accept ‘masculine men’ and ‘feminine women’ as normal. That is, we expect
Resentment against Elizabeth and her Woodville family steadily grew during the course of her nineteen-year marriage to Edward IV. All in the House of York distrusted her for her previous Lancaster connections. Her father has risen through Lancaster ranks; she had been a maid-of-honor for Lancaster Queen Margaret of Anjou; her first husband, Sir John Grey, died in cavalry service for Henry VI. All

In the play Hamlet, Hamlet has many different personality traits. Three of these characteristics are that Hamlet is depressed, clever, and hesitant. Throughout the play you can see these characteristics in Hamlet many times.
In theory women during the Elizabethan Age had no power in their homes. In royal families the women are the breeders, they had the responsibility to keep the royal bloodline flowing by having male children to keep the male dominance. “A woman whose job is to represent the family, is doing the traditionally female job of being wife or mother.” (Billig) Gertrude’s role in the play had fairly little significance, besides that she was a mother and wife. She showed no reasons as to why she was in such a rush to remarry after her husband, King Hamlet’s death. Claudius, being the wicked man that he was, may have been so eager to claim the thrown as King that he married the widow to rule Denmark. This whole ordeal of his uncle sleeping with his mother made Hamlet infuriated and ill to his stomach. Hamlet showed his emotions when he said:
A hero is someone that helps others no matter what the situation. There are many qualities that a hero must posses such as bravery, courage, strength, intelligence and honor. These qualities alone are not enough to make a hero. They must also be pure at heart, fight for the good of mankind and only fight when it is to protect the people and not out of revenge. Beowulf is everything a hero should be, but contains a few qualities that a hero should not posses. When Beowulf sailed with his men to Herot he had one goal, to rid the hall of Grendal. Beowulf was under no obligation to destroy Grendal and never asked for anything in return for his services. A true hero would never ask for money or anything of value. He put his life at risk to save the people of Herot, who he didn’t even know, out of his own good nature Great strength has been a trait that has been identified with heroes in many stories and legends. Than he saw hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons But so massive that no ordinary man could lift... (II. 1557-1560) Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulfs popularity had spread all over the world. He never let this go to his head and he never thought that he was better than everyone else because of it. “Your fame is everywhere, my friend,/Reaches to the ends of the earth, and you hold it in your heart wisely...” (II.1704-1706). A hero should not be foolish or full of himself. Unferth said: You’re Beowulf, are you- the same Boastful fool who fought a swimming Match with Brecca, both of you daring and young and proud, exploring the deepest Seas, risking your lives for no reason But the danger? (II. 506-511) A hero should not have to prove to himself or to anyone else that he is brave, fearless or courageous. If he is pure a heart and his intentions are good then he can be considered a true hero.
“What a hundred years is not enough to build, one day is more than enough to destroy”-author unknown (quotes.dictionary.com). This quotation explains how during the Hundred Years War there were battles where thousands of people died and whole towns were destroyed, and all of this was happening while a better country was trying to be built. The Hundred Years War was a very significant time in European history. The Hundred Years War brought the Middle Ages to a close and changed warfare considerably.
