INTRODUCTION The four learning goals for this lab are:
1. Each student will examine the individual level of the ecological hierarchy.
2. Each student will complete an online survey (www.myfootprint.org) that estimates the impact that his/her lifestyle choices (“ecological footprint”) will have on other organisms.
3. Each student will survey at least 10 other people before deciding how much individual(s) can impact other areas of Ecology.
4. Each student will use the scientific method and at least 3+ scientific resources (cited in-text and using proper MLA in the “Works Cited”) to complete and turn in this laboratory exercise by the class due date.

This hierarchy consists of different levels starting from individuals and ending with the biosphere. The hierarchy consists of these levels starting from the bottom: individual, population, community, ecosystem, and biosphere. The individual level consists of the individual organisms and it examines how one organism interacts with the environment around it. A group of similar organisms make up the next level, population. A population is a group of similar organisms living in a specific geological location. Now when you add another species into the mix, you are moving to the next level which is a community. A community focuses on the different relationships that develop between the different species, such as a predator and prey relationship. When you add abiotic factors to a community you have created an ecosystem. An ecosystem focuses on how the biotic and abiotic factors interact. Finally the last level is the biosphere; the biosphere simply represents everything on earth. The hierarchy is important because it helps us to understand the world around us and how affecting one part of the hierarchy affects the whole …show more content…
“The scientific method is the best way yet discovered for winnowing the truth from lies and delusion” (Wudka). The scientific method is comprised of about six steps, depending on which variation you use. The first step of the scientific method is to make an observation(s). After you have made your observations you move onto the next step which is to ask questions about the observations and gather information. The third step of the scientific method is to form a hypothesis. Once you have formed your hypothesis you can test your hypothesis and make predictions. From there you analyze the results of the experiment that has been performed and accept or reject your hypothesis. The last step is to “reproduce the experiment until there are no discrepancies between observation and theory” (Bradford). The scientific method is important to know and understand because it is a basis in any science class or field of science, in addition, everyone should know this in order to understand the science in the world around
One would think that science is methodological. After all, the sole purpose of science is to discover universal truths. There are practices meant to remove any bias, such as peer review, repeatability studies, and a hard reliance
Throughout the movie The Awakening, Robin Williams demonstrates his knowledge of the scientific method. The scientific method is a procedure of steps that is used to prove problems. In the movie it is used to show that patients suffering from an un-named disorder do have a slight opportunity to return to their normal state of being. The scientific method is a list of steps to prove something and make into a law or theory based on your final product and findings.

In conclusion, the title and context of the article are clear, and appropriately match the hypothesis of the authors. There is consistency between the objective of the experiment and its relationship to science. This writer found some issues in the overall presentation of information, in that the text lacks smooth transition, and was difficult to read and follow.
Scientists make progress by using the scientific method, a process of checking conclusions against nature. After observing something, a scientist tries to explain what has been seen. The explanation is called a hypothesis. There is always at least one alternative hypothesis. A part of nature is tested in a "controlled experiment" to see if the explanation matches reality. A controlled experiment is one in which all treatments are identical except that some are exposed to the hypothetical cause and some are not.
The scientific method is the analyzation of evidence, to examine a case from every angle possible, to not give up on an investigation until all of the angles are covered and to not allow personal emotions create a bias in their mind (Osterburg 2010). A scientific method example would be when an investigator arrives to a crime scene, they would first search the area for clues and see if something doesn’t seem right. Next they would have to search for different forms of evidence, most important would be trace evidence because it can provide DNA evidence which can also link a suspect to the crime. There are many more ways evidence and other clues can be harvested from a crime scene but it is up to the investigator to use their knowledge and help find the person responsible for the crime
In today’s society people tend to be followers. People wear things or do things that they see others do, not knowing that everyone is born their own person. Things that make people unique and different from others is what makes them stand out. That leads me to introduce the topics to this paper. From nature-nurture, Bronfenbenner’s ecological system, and overall our culture is what makes us humans. Going through certain phases and transtions in life helps us to define ourselves over time. After reading this paper, it would give you a better understanding of my life and who I am as a person.
Community structures and functions are constantly changing. Organisms die and replaced over time. The gradual process by which ecosystems change and develop over time is called ecological succession. Succession is usually defined as ‘a continuous, unidirectional, sequential change in the species composition of a natural community’ (Mackenzie, Ball & Virdee, 2001). Succession occurs because the environmental conditions in a particular area change over time. Each species is adapted to compete against other species under a very specific set of environmental conditions. If these conditions were to change, the existing species will be replaced by a new set of species that are better adapted to the new conditions.
Anything that can be studied is absolutely considered a science. When people think of science and the scientific method they most often think of chemicals. Human experiment’s can also be conducted and considered scientific. The scientific method can be used to study people. Simply start by asking a question, doing background research, and then constructing a hypothesis. When studying people or their culture you can absolutely start with these simple steps, therefore using science to study these people. After determining your hypothesis, you can test it with an experiment, record your results and form a conclusion. “Science is the best system yet devised for reducing subjective bias, error, untruths, lies, and frauds.” (Harris, 1994, Pg. 6) Harris states that using science is they best way to prevent errors or miscalculations. We use science everyday; to assess every situation, and every problem that we have, even when we don’t think we a...
Every day the world around us is changing ever so slightly in many different ways. Humans can affect the environment through our day to day lifestyle without even noticing the change. An ecological footprint is a measurement of how much a person uses the environment around them to live their life. This given measurement can help one to see their impact on the earth. It is an important tool to understand what actually a human does to change the habitat near them. My ecological footprint results gave me a perspective of how my daily life can impact the world I live in, as well as, how I as an individual can change my actions to make less waste on earth. It is also useful for each person to know their own ecological footprint since no one live

Adjusting these two requests opportuneness and exactness has perplexed school across the nation. Not all teachers have successfully joined environmental change in the educational programs. Now and again freshness to the subject goes about as a weight, diverse conditions there's assurance in the gathering. We're similarly endeavoring to get the teachers to allow them, students, to fathom that we have alternatives as an overall population, as individuals in your own specific lifestyle. So the students can completely think about the method, and look at the choices, and see that with each choice there are coming about.
An ecosystem consists of a community of living organisms and their interaction with the other organisms and the environment. In an ecosystem all the living organisms are constantly interacting with each other and the non-living components (water, soil, air) of the environment. In an ecosystem, all the organisms either directly or indirectly depends on one another. This dependance keeps the ecological balance of the environment.
The branch of science that deals with how living things, including humans, are related to their surroundings is called ecology . The Earth supports some 5 million species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. These interact and influence their surroundings, forming a vast network of interrelated environmental systems called ecosystems. The arctic tundra is an ecosystem and so is a Brazilian rain forest. The islands of Hawaii are a relatively isolated ecosystem. If left undisturbed, natural environmental systems tend to achieve balance or stability among the various species of plants and animals. Complex ecosystems are able to compensate for changes caused by weather or intrusions from migrating animals and are therefore usually said to be more stable than simple ecosystems. A field of corn has only one dominant species, the corn plant, and is a very simple ecosystem. It is easily destroyed by drought, insects, disease, or overuse. A forest may remain relatively unchanged by weather that would destroy a nearby field of corn, because the forest is characterized by greater diversity of plants and animals. Its complexity gives it stability.
The steps that are included in most pre-college textbooks are defining the problem, gathering background information, forming a hypothesis, making observations, testing the hypothesis, drawing conclusions, and communicating the results, but this method is not used. One reason for this myth is the way results are published in research journals because it makes people believe that scientists follow a certain research plan. Philosophers have shown that no research procedure is applied by all scientists. Usually scientists use imagination, knowledge, perseverance, and other methods used by problem solvers. This myth teaches that science is not different from other challenges that humans face. This myth has a chance to be corrected because many newer textbooks are taking the method out of the discussions of
