The Ebola and Marburg virus are extremely lethal viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever. The Ebola and Marburg virus are both in the virus family of Filoviridae in which Ebola and Marburg are known to be filoviruses. These viruses can be spread easily through the exchange of bodily fluids. When a human body becomes infected by any of these viruses, their body will bleed out internally, as well as externally, where blood rushes out in every opening of the body. The virus causes the internal organs to liquefy as well. Because of the effects, the way it spreads easily from person to person, and its power to easily kill many people, the Ebola and Marburg has the potential to be the slate wiper. In the novel The Hot Zone, the author, Richard Preston, does a wonderful job in explaining and describing how the Ebola and Marburg viruses affect the body through real experiences from the deaths of some of the infected people, as well as the researchers from the CDC and USAMRIID. In very detailed descriptions, Preston let the readers imagine how these viruses go through one’s body, liquefy the body’s internal organs, as well as cause the body to turn into a corpse prior to actually dying. Not many people are aware enough about what these viruses could do, where they came from, nor where the outbreak could start at any moment. Just as Preston describe in his book The Hot Zone, “You can’t fight off Ebola the way you fight off a cold. Ebola does in ten days what it takes AIDS ten years to accomplish” (Preston). The survival rate of these viruses are very low and in most cases, many people who were infected have resulted to death. There is no known cure for these viruses so it would be hard to survive if and when infected. Ebola from everyone’s point of view is seen as inferno. Dr. Steven Hatch’s memorable journey began with him volunteering to leave for Liberia in 2013 to work at a hospital in Monrovia to fight Ebola in one of its most affected areas. There were only a few patients with Ebola when he arrived. The number of patients rapidly increased over his time in Liberia. After six months Ebola was declared a world health emergency and not only were ordinary people outside of the hospital getting the virus but the medical personnel that were tending to the patients had caught it and some of them had even died.
The novel, “The Hot Zone”, by Richard Preston, is an extraordinary tale about a virus called the Ebola virus. The author interviews a number of different people that all had encounters with the virus and records their stories. He is very interested by what they tell him and throughout the novel he is always seeking to find more information about it. There were many different encounters in this book but in my summary I am going to explain the ones that interested me the most.
The Hot Zone by Richard Preston is a true story about an outbreak of the Ebola virus, just outside of Washington D.C. in the 1980’s. Early in the story, the author describes a series of several outbreaks that took place in Africa, in order to describe the true destruction of this very lethal virus. The first appearance of this virus happens in a cave in Kenya. The virus infects Charles Monet, and then he is later taken to a hospital where his bloody death is described in detail. Later on the nurses that treated him also become infected with the disease, starting an outbreak. There are many more outbreaks to come later in the story.

The viruses are widespread due to the errors that occur when the viruses are in the presence of human beings. The effects of the errors performed by the human race include a decrease in population and wildlife. The viruses are spread in many different ways in the novel, but all are due to human mistakes.
The main way that Preston does this is by appealing to the sense of fear and the ongoing battle of good versus evil. By making people fear the virus Preston hopes that he drives the action towards preventing the virus’ spread and destruction because people fear for their friends and family as well as themselves. Preston’s illustration of good versus evil also creates a heroic aspect to fighting the Ebola virus as no job is more revered than that who combats evil for the common good. The Hot Zone is a nonfiction story written about the lethal filovirus, Ebola. Charles Monet was working in the Nzoia Sugar Factory. During a trip to Mount Elgon, Charles visited Kitum Cave. After his trip, he started having headaches. During his visit to the doctor, he fell down and bled out. During Charles' examination, he threw up in Dr. Musoke's eyes. After nine days, Dr. Musoke had a backache, which was not normal for him and his eyes turned red. When he could not diagnose himself, he called in another doctor. After getting his blood tested, the results showed positive for Ebola. Over a few years, many signs of Ebola and Marburg, a closely related virus to Ebola, had shown up in Africa. The blood fails to clot and patients may bleed from injection sites and into the gastrointestinal tract, skin and internal organs. Massive destruction of the liver is one distinct symptom of Ebola. This virus does in ten days what it takes AIDS ten years to do. It also requires bio-safety level four containment, the highest and most dangerous level. HIV the virus that causes AIDS requires only a bio-safety level of two. In reported outbreaks, 50%-90% of cases have been fatal.
