Too old to trick or treat? No worries, go to a haunted house! This Halloween, have a good time being scared at a haunted house, whether it be in your neighborhood, school, or carnival. For thrill-seekers, this is a perfect opportunity that can’t be missed out on. Frightening zombies, spooky stories, and bone-chilling experiences await anyone who dares enter a haunted house. The history of haunted houses is very rich. Early versions of a “haunted house” date back to the Ancient Egyptians, who would set up traps in tombs of rich people to scare away body snatchers. The first haunted house was a wax museum in the 1800’s that carried wax figures of decapitated people, such as Mary Antoinette, Maximilien Robespierre, and many other historical
figures from that time period. As the years went on, multiple haunted houses would open up, such as Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, which opened up in 1969, or Six Flag’s Haunted Castle, which opened up in 1978. Today haunted houses can be commonly found all across the world, thrilling people with their scary attractions. Some haunted houses have a certain theme, whether it be a love story gone wrong, or a ghostly spirit haunting the owners of the house. Similar activities that could relate to a haunted house could be escape rooms, where participants are trapped in a room and given clues and a certain amount of time to escape. Scary attractions aren’t limited to only haunted houses these days. If you don’t want to go to a haunted house, there are amusement parks, mazes and many other activities to take part in. All in all, there are many ways to spend your Halloween, whether it be trick or treating or having a party. Haunted houses can provide a fright of a night and many thrills to excited thrill-seekers and regular people alike.

The story of Woodburn Mansion has been told to residents of Dover, Delaware for many years. A 19-year-old Caucasian male student at the University of Maryland told this particular version of the ghosts of Woodburn Mansion. Now a sophomore architecture major, he grew up in a small town just outside of Dover, where the story of Woodburn is known all too well. The story was first told to him as a young teenager while actually visiting the mansion with his parents.
Ghosts and goblins are lurking around every corner. Mysterious creatures are waiting to jump out of every shadow. The boogieman and his accomplices are posted under the bed and in the closet, counting the minutes until children go to sleep so that that can attack and scare the life out of them. We all grew up with these fears in the back of out heads. There is always at least one person and one building in every town, whether it be small or large, with a story... a history of mysterious, paranormal behavior. The little town of Canton, Missouri is no different.
The Haunting of Hill House is a gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. Supernatural occurrences take place within the house revolving around Eleanor. Eleanor is a thirty-two-year-old woman who never once has felt the sense of inclusion. Eleanor seems to never recall the feeling of delight in her adult years due to the fact that she was a caretaker for her now deceased Mother; who took away most of her freedom by being incredibly restrictive. Dr. Montague, a doctor that specializes in analysis of the supernatural rents Hill House, a supposedly haunted house. During the renting period, Dr. Montague begins an experiment inviting individuals who have had involvement in abnormal events
The particular story I collected takes place in Philadelphia, where ghost stories are plentiful. Philadelphia is an old city with a rich cultural heritage, and our founding fathers made history in the place that was once our nation’s capital (Eidmann). Many believe that their spirits and spirits of those from colonial times still lurk around. It is easy to feel like spirits are around when in a place where many people have lived and died before, and in a place that is filled with old buildings and landmarks. All of these factors make this city a perfect place for a ghost story.
All houses are haunted; all persons are haunted; throngs of spirits follow us everywhere, we are never alone. Every county has they own haunted places some more known than others. I know this very personally because I live less than 100 yards from one of those haunted places, Marsh Road. I will take you on an adventure though Wisconsin’s past and present gulls and goblins that will sure give you a new look on Wisconsin. The haunted places in Wisconsin are worth learning about.
Atop the list of the most impressive, satisfying haunted house movies created in the last decade is Insidious (although the sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2, essentially tainted it). The back-to-back stories set forth in the Insidious films focus on the Lambert family and their connection to the spirit world, which they reluctantly navigate through with the help of a team of paranormal investigators.
The Nelly Butler hauntings is referred to as the first recorded ghost story in American history (LiBrizzi 5), and possibly the most exciting hauntings to date as there are still many unsolved mysteries. The apparition appeared on more than 30 separate occasions to over 100 witnesses in Sullivan, Maine, just over fifteen years after the American Revolution (5-6). Although the Nelly Butler apparition is one of the most convincing ghosts of all time, it was subject to suspicions of fraud. These claims turn out to be groundless as the evidence reveals the ghost to be genuine.
From the perspective of a ghost story, the narrator makes references to some “creepy” ideas early in the story, noting her first impression of the house is, “it is haunted” (Gilman 746). Beyond the aesthetics of the house, we see a level of fear overcoming the narrator in: “there is something strange about this house-I can feel it” (Gilman). What about the house makes it appear and feel haunted? Not the aesthetics of the home, but what’s inside…..inside the wallpaper. Almost immediately we see the issues...
This story, although somewhat unique in its exact plot, contains many elements that make it a typical and traditional ghost story. These elements suggest common fears in today’s society of people in general, and children specifically.
C. It takes about 45-55 minutes to get completely through the haunted house, depending on the person. The only exit out of the building is a four story slide. "Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult."

Imagery is used in the story very often and is used by giving the reader a mental picture of what is being described. There are many examples of imagery in this story with the use of metaphors and similes such as “The doors go shutting in the distance, gently knocking like the pulse of a heart.” this imagery allows the readers to picture in their mind the image of the ghost roaming the house and shutting doors in their wake. The title A Haunted House is an irony in itself most people associate haunted house with horror and evil creatures, but in reality this story is the opposite of that, “This gentle tale both references and refuses many of the characteristics of conventional ghost stories, and so ‘we see no lady spread her ghostly cloak’.43 A ghostly couple preside over the house, ensuring its safety and that of those who live in it. Their stirrings are not those of destructive poltergeists.” Woolf decided to reject the conventional ghost stories that have been told time and time again and give people a different view on ghost by making the ghost in this story protagonist who are just reminiscing about good times and the love they share throughout the story. this shows the readers that things are not always as it seems and to not judge a book by its
