Jazz has been a style of music for about a century. It is one of the only types of music that has changed with the times. It has created so many subgenres with itself, like Funk Rock, Swing, Bebop and many others. Many schools even have a Jazz band for the students. That is just one-way how Jazz music effects music today. There are also many other ways that Jazz has affected music today, like without it, African-Americans would not have the same rights as whites, because Jazz was one of the things that helped with the Harlem Renaissance, and the Harlem Renaissance is what started the pathway to civil rights for African-Americans. With so many different styles and artists, Jazz has survived to today, since the early twentieth century, and has become a popular style of music.
Jazz first started in the early twentieth century, during that time, live music was still the main for of entertainment. Historians believe that the birthplace of Jazz music win in New Orleans, Louisiana. It started in New Orleans because there was all kinds of music there. The music that was especially prominent there was Ragtime, from Missouri, and The Blues, from Mississippi (Tyle, np).
Just before World War I, the Creole band toured around the country as part of a vaudeville company. This introduced Jazz to many parts of the country. Even though, the Creole band was one of the first Jazz bands to make a record, it wasn’t until 1917, when the original Dixieland Jazz band would lay down the first example of New Orleans style Jazz. Another musician is Louis Armstrong, and he was one of the best Jazz musicians of his time. He preferred doing improvisation, and he had some of the best improvisations that there ever was (“History of Jazz”, np).

Because of all of these reasons, Jazz has made it all the way to today, and is still a well known type of music. Without Jazz, the music industry and the lives of many would be completely different.

The first appearance of jazz was at the turn of the century in New Orleans and is called “Dixieland Jazz,” or “Classic Jazz.” It developed out of music for street parades in the black community. It also had deeper roots in a style of music called “Blues,” which was used to express the daily experiences of the community (History). Other influences include the combination of West African folk music with the popular classical music of Europe, developing into syncopated rhythms and chord variations on classical pieces (Passion).
Because jazz is not an identity statement, some of the feelings and expressions that were used during the beginning of the era have diffused. With this, jazz has become weaker, but well known. Jazz will always continue to have character. Jazz will always be art. Jazz will always have a story to tell.
Jazz became popular during the 1920s and was developed from Blues and Ragtime. The 1920s was nicknamed The Roaring Twenties or the Jazz age because it was a time where many traditonal moral standards were not followed and people indulged in new danicng and dressing styles. Jazz is still important to us today but according to Nielsen‘s 2014 Year-End Report, jazz is continuing to fall out of favor with American listeners and has tied with classical music as the least-consumed music in the U.S., after children’s
Jazz was a unique form of music, there had never been anything like it before. It was rebellious, rhythmic, and it broke the rules- musical and social. It started a musical revolution, “With its offbeat rhythms and strange melodies, jazz was blamed for everything from drunkenness and deafness to in increase in unwed mothers.” Jazz was seen as immoral and worried the older generation that their kids would lose interest in classical music. It was also seen as against society because it came about from the African- American culture, but despite all of that, jazz led to a new era of music that still prevails today.
Mr. Armstrong had many of talents such as singing, film star, comedian, and being a bandleader. Although he was blessed with many talent, he left an outstanding imprint on Jazz. Louis Armstrong was the first person to bring jazz out of New Orleans and spread it all over the world. His unique technique show different characteristics on a trumpet. For example, in 1922 Louis started to put his style into jazz whenever he joined King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band. The way he improvised shocked all sorts of musicians because he was able to improvise a perfect harmony part, no matter how anyone played it.
Jazz was introduced directly after World War I by African-Americans (Boundless.com par. 1). Although jazz was composed by many different African-Americans the main founder of jazz was Ethel Waters (McCorkle par. 8). Jazz was first played in New Orleans, but as the African-Americans moved north, white citizens caught on and tuned jazz into a new craze (Lindop 107). Even though jazz was created in New Orleans, Chicago became the home of jazz music (Bingham 8). The first jazz players derived the tune from a mixture of Latin American, African, and European rhythms, making it very popular among many different types of people (“Latin Jazz” par. 1). Jazz was so well-liked because it gave the artists the opportunity to make the predetermined tune their own (“What is jazz par. 1). When listening to jazz the same song is never heard twice because the band members each put their own spin on the way they play their instrumen...
Imagine you are walking the streets of New Orleans. You are standing right where jazz was established in the United States of America. Jazz wasn’t just about music, it also affected the culture involving social, economic, artistic and jazz leaders.
It could not be examined when and by whom Jazz music was found. People began hearing jazz music in the early 1900s. It originated from
To understand the genesis of Jazz one must also understand the setting of its origin, New Orleans. The city was founded by the French in 1718, then in 1763 the city ceded to Spain and remained under Spanish control until later being returned to the French in 1803, and then was immediately sold to the United States under the Louisiana Purchase. New Orleans was also heavily populated by African slaves making up 30% of the total population of the city at this time; so New Orleans was experiencing a lot of cultural diversity and was being shaped and molded by the many different fashions of people who lived in the city. These different social groups along with their culture also brought with them their deep rooted musical traditions, the fusion and combination of these traditions would give rise to what we know today as modern day Jazz. Jazz is a genre of music that could only have formed in America; it draws from many different cultures and art forms creating a cocktail of traditional European and African music, mixed with a blend of Spanish tinge, with a strong base of blues filtered through the American experience.
Jazz is referred as “America’s classical music,” and is one of North America’s and most celebrated genres. The history of Jazz can be traced back to the early era of the 20th century of the U.S. “A History of Jazz” presents From Ragtime and Blues to Big Band and Bebop, jazz has been a part of a proud African American tradition for over 100 years. My appreciation for jazz began when I was just seven, listening to an old record player at my great grandfather's house. My great grandfather would always have me get a Louis Armstrong record and put it gently on the record player. He told me stories every time a song ended. After "What a Wonderful World", he told me that he had never heard singing brought to jazz until Louis Armstrong came around. He said that the way Louis sang was revolutionary, at the time. Then he had me go put on another record, this time it only had musical instruments playing. Once that one was over he told me "Satchmo was just the best trumpet player I have ever heard. There is no one who could have beaten Louis when it comes to the trumpet." After we were done listening
Merriam Webster dictionary defines Jazz as “a type of American music with lively rhythms and melodies that are often made up by musicians as they play (Webster, 2015). Music is extremely powerful and has the ability to change people’s feelings; in fact, music therapy has recently become a popular method of helping people deal with problems such as stress, anxiety, and pain (Music Therapy Makes a Difference, 2004). Vocal Jazz is rhythmic poetry tied with powerful instruments and the lyrics behind it, all are a key component of what makes it a powerful
Jazz music has got a lot of importances as much as it lacks a correct definition. It plays a role in the entertainment sector. It entertains the listeners who are passionate to the art. They get a special entrainment especially for the working class who find listening to jazz as an activity done during the leisure time. Jazz on the other hand is very educative and informative of the past and the current issues. Since it is a long time art, it can be used to safeguard and protect the cultural practices of the people of the community. The culture is stored in the jazz songs and easily passed from one generation to another. It can also be transferred from one community to another since jazz music listeners are all over the world. Hence jazz music is a store of culture of a people of a particular social locality or geographical location.
In conclusion, the evidence is overwhelming that jazz has left a large impact on American culture. The birth of jazz started with African Americans and has lasted throughout the years because of African Americans. Events such as the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance allowed for artists such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to spread the popularity of jazz. Jazz was able to change how Americans viewed African Americans and their culture and essentially invited Americans into their culture and shape America to where it is today. This change was happened because jazz brought a change to the music scene, acceptance of African Americans, and a change of lifestyles to the everyday people. Although some will never be convinced, but jazz is here to stay.
In 1920, the Jazz music emerged in the City of New Orleans and from there, there were also many great New Orleans Jazz musicians. Jazz is a music style that combines three main elements: improvisation, bluesy flavor and swing feeling. Often, African Americans play Jazz on the streets of New Orleans and they start to form bands and perform for people without charging them money. In the early history of Jazz, there was one major artist that had major contributions to Jazz, his name was Louis Armstrong.
