The first artifact I chose was an article review I did on development with music for early childhood development: birth to age 6. I Chose this article review because it’s a great article in showing the many ways music can help build children's social-emotional, physical, cognitive, language and literacy development. What I learned from this article is that there are any ways children can develop their skills by using creative new ways for instance like the music in the article that hit five different areas of development just by using music nothing else so think of all the cool other ways as a teacher that you could come up with in help to promote approached yet creative and fun ways of development.

Standard 1 for the NAEYC professional preparation is “Promoting Child Development and Learning” With the key element “Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs” the artifact in which I choose is the activity plans with adaptions done in the How Children Learn class. In my opinion this activity allowed us to think further than a typical developing child. Adaptions were to be planned for children that are gifted, autistic, and ones that may have speech and language impairment. Being able to plan activities based on the child’s own needs and developmental range is why this artifact fits well with this key element.

The picture I choose for my personal artifact assignment is a picture of my old HALO-3 helmet based of the video game HALO which is a sci-fi & military science fiction first-person shooter video game. The game deals with inter- galactic warfare which also involves fictional characters to travel around in space, explore new discoveries and findings in planets. The reason why I choose this helmet as my artifact is that it relates to our coarse earth and space a lot as it merely almost looks like a future of what could be of a astronauts helmet and through the game and in the course they also show resemblance of how life is in space, different theories and the game also sheds some light on how the future of space travel may be in the years yet
Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. As with infants, no two are alike; each toddler is unique in his or her developmental stages, and each accomplishes milestones at different times. “Although children develop at different rates, there are common stages of development that serve as guidelines for what most children can do by a certain age” (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). As seen in the hatfieldmomof3 (2011) video, one observes toddlers at play and can determine the age of the toddlers by their actions and the milestones they have accomplished.

The daycare that I visited was Rosemont Daycare and Preschool. This center is faith based and I was able observe the “Duck Class” which was the age group of four and five year olds. I went to observe on February 11th and 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 and the 18th from 3:00 to 6:00. On the 11th and 16th, there were a total of 12 children in the Duck class. At 9:00 the children were engaged in circle time meaning that the children were learning about their bible verse for that month which was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” The children then discussed what they thought that meant. On the 11th I was present to see the children, the ones I decided to observe were Kali, Roslyn, Fiona, and Brayden. When the children were doing crafts I sat near the counter island in the class room so I was out of the way but still able to see and hear what the kids were doing and saying at the table.

Ted was born with a disease where he does not produce one enzyme and this causes his bones to be very fragile. Growing up he had to deal with several doctor’s appointments. He would go through multiple different stages with his art work. For example, when he found out that he would have to get his hips replaced, he went through a very dark stage and his drawings and paintings clearly showed this. After his surgery, he came out with a whole knew series of painting and these were very interactive. The figures were very full and his whole color palette changed. Tim Rose and his wife Natalie Rose have experienced many assumptions and stereotypical comments solely based on their appearances. Natalie is able-bodied, and Tim was born with cerebral palsy (Verstraten, 2014). The Roses have created the “Rose Centre for Love, Sex, and Disability” which aims to promote disability in a positive light, and educate disabled and able-bodied people around the topics of love, sex, and relationships (Verstraten, 2014). One thing that I was anxious to read about was incorporating hands on material for students. Students need to be given many chances to practice what they have learned. Being able to practice is just one aspect of mastering any new skill or concept. There are many important details that should be noted when an educator is choosing hands on materials. My time observing was not only educational for me on how to become the teacher I desire to be, but as well as how to better myself as a student and improve my own learning. I observed some wonderful learning tools that I have since implemented into my own education to develop my own learning.
