In Patricia MacLachlan’s Sarah, Plain and Tall the narrative style is apparent. We know that it is the character Anna whose point of view this story is from. It is essential that it is told from her point of view, because the arrival of Sarah will ultimately affect her the most. We get a sense of the pain that she has undergone, as well as the over-whelming sense of love and pride she has for her family. As Anna explains, “…I didn’t tell him what I really thought. He was homely and plain, and he had a terrible holler and a horrid smell. But these were not the worst of him. Mama died the next morning. That was the worst thing about Caleb” (MacLachlan 4). It also reveals to us the tremendous amount of responsibility that is resting on her young shoulders.
Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character’s perspective and their emotions and that in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read during school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it’s on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she’s capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few issues she tries to work through. This is emphasized through her village and in her school that is located across the bridge in white town. Stacey begins dealing with the loss of Nora, and elder in her town. And this in return begins the chain of events that Stacey begins on the path of self-discovery not only on herself but everyone around her. She begins to see things differently and clearly. Stacey is a very complex and confused character, and she begins to work through these complexities through her thoughts, statements and actions.
She is known for her spoken word poetry and she is the found of Project V.O.I.C.E., a group dedicated to using spoken word as an educational and inspirinational tool. One of her most famous poems is ‘Hands’. The piece is about the importance of hands and all the gestures we make with their help. The main theme of her poem is love. It was a typical day at Strion Middle School, and Felipe Jones was getting pushed around as usual.
During 6th grade english class Will Price is partnered up with a girl he never thought he’d talk to named Sarah Miller. Sarah is a quiet girl but as Will and her start to hangout because of this project they slowly start to become best friends. Will and Sarah become close, so close that it’s weird to even say one’s name without the other’s.
As discussed in class, discourse is our communication. Furthermore, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes discourse as a combination of one’s thinking, acting, and language that is associated to a group of others. There are different kinds of discourses; two discourses that will be discussed in this paper are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). The primary discourse in this paper is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with and by having access to and practice with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse in the paper is attending the University of Arkansas and writing this paper. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process I wanted to know if high school is destined. Was my high school experience awful or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With that, I have researched the social construct and applied it to my previous experiences enabling me to truly discover if high school is destined.
It was a normal day at Paul Wilson Public School. The grade four French-immersion class was in the middle of their second period, which was math class. They were all very bored because they were doing their times tables, and their teacher was making them do it over and over. How do I know? I was in that class!
Literary Analysis of The Girl He Left Behind In The Girl He Left Behind, Tahlie Purvis uses setting, point of view and flashback to emphasize that point of view shows different ways things are thought apon and how to approach certain situations. High School relationships are not a very easy thing to hold onto when you have a lot of other things your mind wants to go about and hold onto. The day had finally come, the day Brooklynn, and I would meet our idol. Brooklynn’s parents picked me up around 12:00, and we were off! Our concert was at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
