Setting in a film is vital in order to understand the characters. In the film “Children of Men” directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the dystopian setting in London, England 2027 helped me understand the main character of Theo Faran. This essay will describe the dystopian setting on a busy day in London where Theo is detached from the world, in the barn where Kee tells Theo that she is pregnant and the closing setting where the war occurred in Bexhill with the British government against the refugees. The dystopian setting in London on a busy winter’s day in 2027 is where Theo’s adventures began. Kee, who is an African refugee tells Theo that she’s pregnant by revealing her baby bump amongst a herd of cows. The setting creates an illusion of Jesus being born in a manger and that he’s a very important icon believed by the Christian faith. This is significant because Jesus was born to save the human race and Kee’s baby resembles the beginning of a new generation where babies do exist. The lighting is very moody which reflects the dark setting. A lighting technique is used to brighten the atmosphere which is a halo light effect around Kee’s head reflecting from the sunlight that shines through the window. This effect creates a sense of hope for Kee and her unborn baby and that she is the main focus of the setting. A close up of Kee and Theo is shown to express his face of shock when the news occurs and the important relationship that will soon grow. At first, the only words, Theo could say is “She’s pregnant” but later on, he becomes more selfless and helps her along her journey.
