“ One Choice can transform you”- Then how can someone be certain it is right? In Veronica Roth's dystopian novel divergent, it is seen that no one is sure of the outcome, yet everyone pursues their belief. The characters in the novel are seen going against their factions, families and friends to do what they feel would make a rational choice, without secure results at the end. “ Faction before Blood”(V. Roth 23). This saying is known to be the motto of all factions, nevertheless for some individuals it is the opposite. “I can’t wage war against Abnegation against my family. Wein 1). The famous quote does not apply to the factional city of the divergent, where choice comes before all things. “‘ I feel Al’s hand against my mouth again, and a sob jolts my body forward’” ( Tris 285 ). Notably, Al desired to join the attack with Drew and Peter to torture Tris, to whom once he was a loyal friend. The insecurity of Tris’s success with the simulations tricked Al into thinking the attack was the ideal choice, no matter what it may lead to in the future. “‘And I figured your friends might not be so congratulatory, since their ranks aren’t as high’” ( Uriah 271 ). Similar to Al’s case, Christina and Will concluded to parting ways with Tris, after seeing her rank first among the non- dauntless-born initiates. They presumed Tris had been pretending her inadequacy with the physical test, in which she lost to Peter. As result of, Will and Christina agreed upon not being a safety blanket to Tris, furthermore here they decided it was time to focus on themselves. ‘“ They said they were not a part of this, they were just trying to scare you’” ( Four 280). Both Al and Drew are spotted denying the claim of attacking Tris when they encounter Four, leaving Peter by himself they proceed to opt-out. They approved it was best to stay out of the fuss of dealing with the dauntless penalty. Therefore Al, Will , Christina and Drew demonstrated the act of choice over friends. All these characters choose on their personal wish first, while it did not keep their friendship they all had the power of
Bad blood is a book that was written James H. Jones who is an associate professor of History. The blacks in Macon County, Alabama were turned into laboratory animals without their knowledge and the purpose of the experiment
... from previous experiences and bases future decisions on what they have experienced. When a person makes a decision that isn’t justified, they unknowingly change how they view future problems. If the decision has not been based in truth, it allows them a certain amount of unearned freedom to make wrong decisions, as opposed to when one make a proper decisions. It is crucial that every decision made is justified in order to keep their moral compass steady and to make the proper decisions when the choice is hard.
The book Fahrenheit 451 and the movie Hunger Games both display a dystopian fiction setting. A dystopian setting is when it is a futuristic, made up universe, and the illusion of a perfect society is maintained through corporate, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. In dystopias the characters make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. At the beginning of each of these the main characters follow through with what their government wants them to do however toward the end of each they start to do what they want or what they believe is better than what the government recommends..
Throughout life, individuals are faced with decisions and obstacles that must be overcome. These decisions and actions are easily influenced by outside forces and motivations and the outcomes of our actions can have a drastic effect on one's destiny. The act of deciding a course of action is not always simple, but it is made even more difficult when we are faced with a time period and a negative outcome if we chose not to continue on our journey. In the short story “Winter’s Bone,” written by Daniel Woodrell, we are taught that throughout life people make choices between what they want to do and what they need to do. Sometimes those choices lead to unfavourable outcomes,
in every choice we make and our outcomes depend on our choices. Not too long ago, our preacher

One individual’s action may alter the lives, destinies, and future of millions of other people. In A Sound of Thunder, the killing of a single butterfly alters the course of evolution. Bradbury observes how a careless action by one traveler alters the destiny of others. “With the death of that one caveman, a billion others yet unborn are throttled in the womb” (Bradbury 3). Creating destiny is about being careful in actions. Human beings should learn how to create destiny by sticking to or changing their actions. A person should not reject doing one act of kindness even when it appears to be of no significant importance, neither should one commit a bad act even if it appears to cause an insignificant harm. Bradbury emphasizes on the significance of this argument, “destroy a single man, and you destroy a whole race of people and eventually an entire life history” (Bradbury 3). A single act of good or bad can impact or alter the future in unimaginable ways.
Throughout 1984 and Divergent, conformity and obedience force the characters to go to great lengths in order to follow the basics and rules of the government. Throughout Orwell’s 1984, the individuals of the society hang onto every word, law, and thought of Big Brother. The citizens focus primarily on the Ministries and Party, not forming connections or relationships with others. Each member of a party have certain jobs and clothing assigned to them, separating them for others to easily detect. The same concept lies within the factions of Divergent. Each faction has a different job, and different colors to wear in order to display their role in society. The leaders of each Faction also hold the phrase “faction before blood,” depicting the same messege Big Brother enforces in 1984. Both governments want the individuals to stay within their parties, and do the jobs assigned to them. However, both novels include characters refusing to conform and obey to government rules. In 1984, Winston Smith resents Big Brother, using his knowledge from the Minitrue to reveal the lies the government spreads. Because of the disatisfaction Winston shows towards his government, O’Brien follows him, tortures him, and brainwashes him into conforming like the others. In Divergent, the government leaders label Beatrice Prior as a “divergent,” or one who possesses more than one

Everyone’s days are filled with choices. They start of small; what to eat for breakfast, what shirt to wear, whether or not it worth chancing it by giving the dog full roam of the house while the brand new unmarked shoes sit peacefully next to the bed. Throughout the day and throughout one’s life, the choices gradually grow bigger and bigger, until suddenly someone is faced with a decision that the consciously know will alter the course of the life. In a world so full of choice, it is hard to imagine any kind of society where they do not exit. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley manages to do this: it shows a world in which the pressure of choice is seemingly taken away. A citizen’s life is determined from before they are anything more than
'The choice between them depends not on which one is right, but what we wish to know'
Robert D. Kaplan’s article “The Coming Anarchy," is best summarized by the following quote, which identifies the different factors that he evaluates throughout his article, “To understand the events of the next fifty years, then, one must understand environmental scarcity, cultural and racial clash, geographic destiny, and the transformation of war.” (Kaplan, 1994) This is the framework that he uses to make his supporting arguments and thus this summary will be broken down into these four main parts.
