Ever since humans have conquered or established a society, their imperative duty is to try to create a utopian environment. All you can think about in its perfect sense, no mistakes, just everything impeccable. Unfortunately, one can only dream. In which as we are humans, we make mistakes and therefore defeats the meaning of a utopia, and converts into a dystopia. The absolute contrary to what we desire. It all starts with one person sharing their perfect ideas, and illuminating a light to a darkness that every other person has. That light creates hope and the people follow that person in which then over time, gets consumed by some emotion or purpose and thinks of themselves and puts everybody else at ruins, creating a world in which those people wish they never pursued those ideas.
Directed from the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, “all animals are created equal but some animals are more equal than others” I personally think it captures the whole theme in just one quote. By simply saying in general terms that everyone is equal (given the sense of a utopia) but then adding that some are more equal than others. Emphasizing on the word “more” meaning they are superior and/or more capable than others, also giving multiple meaning to the word “equal”. The author George Orwell was influenced by what was going on in the time in the Soviet Union, the Russian Revolution. Highlighting the rivalry between Stalin and Trotskyist in which they are known in the novel as the sharper species the pigs,

Napoleon and Snowballs. They both appear to want better hope for humanity, in which later on wanting what is best for themselves. Furthermore, in the novel, it is clear that Snowball seems that he wants the best for the animals and fights for them in the first battle when the owner comes back to fight for the farm and Napoleon flees the scene. Later on, Snowball gets chased down from the farm and Napoleon claims himself the “President of the Republic” saying everything he does is best for the rest of the animals and basically frames Snowball as the villain. The story goes on, and with once saying “four legs good, two legs bad”, at the end Napoleon stands upright and does business with the humans, betraying everything they stood for at first, with the animals almost dying with scarce rations of food. In the non-fiction this comes to the war, where Stalin (Napoleon in the novel) betraying what he stood for and becoming basically allies with the enemies. Enhancing what he promised a utopia and eventually becoming a dystopia. In the film “An enemy of the People” and the Article that relates to it, reminds us of a perfect crisis displaying the alarming utopia and dystopia crisis also more of a moral/ethical issue. It displays that when Dr. Stockman, the towns physician finds out the local tourists’ waters are infested with dangerous chemicals. He decides to go tell the town’s mayor which contrary enough, is his brother. The mayor quickly explains that he would loose money and wants to cash in on all the profit the spring is making and adds that those tests are sometimes faulty anyway. The utopian characteristics are reflected upon Dr. Stockman in which regardless the mayor’s choice, went ahead and went to go tell the town fearing for their safety. The mayor is the one which mirrors dystopian characteristics in which he does not care for the people just cares for himself. He goes and turns the whole town against Dr. Stockman, creating him an enemy of the people. Supported by an article named The alienated moralist in an Enemy of the People “A single individual alienates himself from the community by disregarding its General Will, to use Rousseau's term, and by ignoring its material interest.” Perfectly describes the will of Dr. Stockman in which he alienates himself from the community and despite the material interest (money) goes and tries to safe them. In spite, the mayor in the movie explains “Think how extraordinarily the place has developed within the last year or two! Money has been flowing in .... Houses and landed property are rising in value every day.” It shows that the mayor is only caring for his personal interest with showing the town that he contributed to it more and therefore cares more. All of these, the novel, film, and article shows that no matter what age, century the issue of the utopia and dystopia will always be in question.
The person that steps up and claims to want to help that society and fills them with all that they want to hear. In which later on as it is shown in the novel Animal Farm, the naïve working class gets betrayed. As George Orwell showed, no matter what type of person or ideas they show, it is power itself that will
corrupt.
It is commonplace for individuals to envision a perfect world; a utopian reality in which the world is a paradise, with equality, happiness and ideal perfection. Unfortunately, we live in a dystopian society and our world today is far from perfection. John Savage, from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, V, from V for Vendetta by James McTeigue and Offred, from The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Attwood, are all characters in a dystopian society. A dystopia is the vision of a society in which conditions of life are miserable and are characterized by oppression, corruption of government, and abridgement of human rights.
Utopia and Dystopia are themes that explore the substantial extents of deceiving ascendancy and contrive an impelling illusion of a ‘perfect‘ society. Utopia is described as a place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs, and conditions while a dystopia, or a negative utopia, is a society characterized as an illusion of a perfect society maintained through oppressive societal control, in which exploits into an exaggerated worst-case scenario. The short stories, Harrison Bergeron, and The Lottery, are both literary examples imparted around a utopian society.
The saying “history repeats itself” is used quite often, but how many times have you actually seen it happen? The book Animal Farm portrays the idea of history repeating itself. The character Benjamin and the pigs in the story show history repeating itself throughout the book. In addition to these characters within the book, North Korea displays history's repetition outside the book.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel based on the lives of a society of animals living on the Manor Farm. Although the title of the book suggests the book is merely about animals, the story is a much more in depth analysis of the workings of society in Communist Russia. The animals are used as puppets to illustrate how the communist class system operated and how Russian citizens responded to this. And also how propaganda was used by early Russian leaders such as Stalin, and the effort this type of leadership had on the behavior of the people of Russia.
The novel “Animal Farm” was written by the author name George Orwell. Animal Farm is a novel based upon the lives of a society of animals wanting a better life for themselves living on the Manor Farm. The setting of the book is a farm called “Manor Farm”. The theme of this book is that the animals should make a stand; if they continue doing the same thing they will continue getting the same results. It is better to be free and starving, than to be fed and enslaved.
While Utopia shines a light on what a society could achieve, Dystopia shines a light on how they can fail. Both a Utopia and Dystopia can begin with the same goals in mind, although in the end can have very different results. When describing a dystopian society, our minds often conjure up the words “dictatorship” or “totalitarianism”. Both these words are commonly associated with forms of government and lack of the common man’s control. Constant supervision, regulated activities, and lack of individualism and emotion are all common signs of a
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm we get a glimpse of a strange switch in totalitarian rule. From Mr. Jones a cruel farmer who feeds his animals to little and works them to hard, to Napolean a pig that will have you killed for a bottle of liquor. Through stupidity, narrow mindedness and pure cowardice of some animals we view the inevitable as the farm animals become ruled by pigs. Old Major probably not the first animal to think of as an animal to ruin a utopia for the farm, is in most cases not a favored example to contribute to the pigs takeover. This pig finally near the end of his better than average life chose to create a rebellion against the then in power Mr. Jones. A truly justifiable act executed in a time to late, for Major died to soon to lead the farm. If Old Major had summed up an ounce of courage in his closer to piglet years further and earlier then his dying days the animals might have had a chance of a better life. Old Major can be seen as him being a late coward having what is thought on the farm to be a good life trying to end it a false legend or maybe Old Major was a slow hero wanting to leave a better life for his friends. Still though we should agree that for Old Major’s failing action or neglect was the time he chose to start a rebellion, in the few days before he died.
The bad thing, however, is when people are deceived by their own government and led to believe the lie. Ruling class detaches itself from the others. They believe they are unique in their abilities and knowledge, and that common people should be grateful to have such great leaders, as they are sacrificing their own time and effort to make their lives easier. “There was, as Squealer was never tired of explaining, endless work in the supervision and organization of the farm. Much of this work was of a kind that the other animals were too ignorant to understand“(Orwell, 121-122). They advocate equal rights as a basis of human rights, yet ironically, they believe they deserve better conditions. Such an example in Animal Farm is when the pigs form a single Commandment “ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS“(Orwell, 126). As commonly interpreted, it means that pigs are more equal that is, more superior than other animals on the farm. However, Kearney suggests that equal in this case does not mean
Animal Farm by George Orwell is a satire of the Russian Revolution that took place during the late 1930s. Orwell uses vibrant characters such as Snowball, Old Major, and Napoleon to represent some of Russia’s horrific past. While Old Major represents the idea of revolution and Snowball represents the idea of industrialism, Napoleon represents the totalitarian dictatorship in Russia. Animal Farm is a good example of what happened to Russia during this time period. While Animal Farm could represent any dictatorship, it more specifically represents the totalitarianism brought on by Joseph Stalin through communism.
“All animals are equal” (Orwell, 23) was a commandment featured in the allegory based off of the Russian Revolution, Animal Farm. An extreme corruption of power by the animals allows the commandment to later be altered to read “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”(PaGE). This dishonest adulteration of authority can also be seen in the novel Anthem. The novels, Animal Farm, and Anthem, despite the difference in their time frames, both have similar themes and concepts that are executed throughout the novel, including: The central idea of egalitarianism, corruption of power and ignorance.
Animal Farm, A novella by George Orwell, tells the tale of the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm, who after much oppression from their master, take over the farm for themselves. In the beginning it seems like the start of a life of freedom and plenty, but ruthless and cunning elite emerges and begins to take control of the farm. The animals find themselves ensnared once again as one form of tyranny gradually replaces the other. The novella is a critique of revolutionary Russia and idealism betrayed by power and corruption. Orwell uses allegory between Animal Farm and the Soviet Union to highlight the corruption of socialist ideals in the soviet union, the power of language and propaganda, and the dangers of a naive working class.
The animals in the book “Animal Farm” hoped to achieve unity, equality. trust/truth, prosperity, better quality of life, freedom and individuality, in terms of the revolution. This was achieved at the beginning of the revolution, which made it a success, but in the end the revolution was a failure.
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a main theme is that power corrupts those who possess it. A definition of corruption is,“dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.” Orwell develops this idea through the character Napoleon in various ways. Looking back in the book, the animal’s rebellion quickly turned political and revolved around, “Leader, Comrade Napoleon (Orwell 81)”. The power Napoleon possed was executed through lies and selfishness, aided by the lack of intellectual ability in the other animals. The corruption of Napoleon’s power is displayed when he favors himself, along with the other pigs, and eventually the dogs, who all get better rations of food compared to the other animals. Another main demonstration of how power corrupts Napoleon is how he separates himself from the other animals on the farm, displaying his feelings if superiority to the other animals. A ceremonial nature develops towards Napoleon. The last way power corrupts Napoleon is how he acts recklessly; killing other animals and lying about
Throughout the course of the novel the lives of everyone – human and animal – on Animal Farm change dramatically. In the case of the pigs their lives get better and better but for all the other animals and the humans their lives take a turn for the worse, after a brief period of optimism for the animals. This change in lifestyle, perhaps suggests Orwell’s thoughts and feelings about communism as he uses all of the events allegorically with the Russian revolution, for example when Snowball is chased out by Napoleon represents in history when Josef Stalin had Leon Trotsky exiled from Russia. Another example is in the card game at the end of the novel when Napoleon, representing Josef Stalin and Russia, and Mr. Pilkington, representing President Truman of America, both play the ace of spades, which represents nuclear weapons, which is historically the beginning of the Cold War.
Animal Farm is about a group of animals taking over the farm in the search for freedom and equality, but over time with wrong decisions made one animal takes control of all. Animal Farm is an example of a dystopia because it is based on five out of the nine traits dystopias have these traits are restrictions, fear, dehumanization, conformity, and control.
