On April 19, 1999 two teenagers, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris decide to attack Columbine High School. These teenagers planned to place bombs in the cafeteria and attained huge guns. They killed thirteen people, and injured many others. One of whom they injured was Patrick Ireland; he was shot in the head, and foot. “Half his body refused. He couldn't stand; he couldn’t even crawl right. He reached with his left hand, gripped something, and dragged himself forward. His useless side trailed behind. He made little progress, and his brain gave out.’’( 77-78) Patrick had lost consciousness and control of his own body. He could speak, but not really. It is like words were coming out, but they were intelligible. I could never completely understand …show more content…
how Patrick felt and how he was feeling during this terrible experience. However, when I was seven, I had a “similar” experience happen to me, I fell off the bathtub after attempting to reach for the cabinet and busted my head on the sink. I had to get staples planted throughout my head. After the incident it was like I was talking, but it only made sense to me not my parents, my sisters, or brother. My parents explained that it was like I was speaking gibberish.
Now I know that Patrick's experience was a thousand times more serious than mine, but I could definitely relate. This horrible experience left his memory bewildered and I could only wonder how it would feel to not be aware of your surroundings to the extent of his, or to not really comprehend what really happened that left him in that state of mind. He did not even understand how he got shot, thinking that he got shot in the hospital. That is astounding! After reading more about the Columbine incident, I came across a very inspiring quote by Patrick.“When I fell out the window, I knew somebody would catch me. That's what I need to tell you: that I knew the loving world was there all the time.” This quote speaks a thousand words to me, it shows that even though he feel out the window, he knew that there was a world who cared about him and a world who loved him. Despite the fact that this quote was intended for Patrick's scenario, it relates to a lot of other people including me. Sometimes I fall and I do not really think about all the people, the world of people who are out there to catch me and to help me come back …show more content…
up. This quote is very inspiring to me showing me that I do not always have to be independent, that I can ask for help when needed and that I do have a world of people to help me because sometimes I forget about those people who stand by my side every day. You always think that your own your own, but there are supporters around you, and Patrick knew that. This shows how Patrick’s faith was so strong, and I could only hope that my faith is as strong as his. Klebold and Harris seemed like some ordinary teenagers, seniors about to graduate. This is what anyone and everyone thought, but unfortunately they were wrong. They were in fact psychopaths. It is crazy to me how the children that appeared the calmest, shyest, or happiest, could actually be the the complete opposite in the inside. I knew a guy who always was smiling, his name was Lucas. No matter what he always put a smile on his face and made other people happy, when in fact he was the one who needed the true happiness. Just two weeks ago, Lucas committed suicide. This relates to Klebold, Harris, Lucas and all the other people who put up this shield, this front to pretend they are something that they are not. Although I do not want to admit it, the days I am smiling and laughing might actually be the days where I am just hiding what is going on underneath whether it is stress, sadness, etc. This is true with a lot of others whether they are teenagers, adults, or even children. Klebold and Harris in the inside were really just filled with hatred of others. Had the propane bomb detonated, the would have incinerated most of inhabitants of the commons. They would have killed five hundred people in the first few seconds.”(124-125)They had utterly no compassion for anyone. They wanted the whole school dead, whether it was friends or not. Klebold and Harris were cold-hearted people who only care about themselves and only barely cared about each other, but they had this composure in front of others that made them appear “normal.” Everyday I see all these people walking down the hallways smiling, greeting friends but who are they in the inside? The students and teachers of Columbine High School thought that the boys were ordinary students; just how most kids at Wakefield and other schools present themselves, but in the inside they could be the exact opposite of what we are seeing. Quotes like,” it’s the quiet ones you need to watch out for” connects well to this. The quiet ones could actually be the angry, furious, unhappy, and/ or the unstable ones. It is sad because over time those quiet ones will reach their breaking point, and it is not hard to buy a gun and to start shooting people and/or even oneself. One serious topic that was not really talked about as much as I wanted it to be was the gun control and how easy it was for Roberyn Anderson to buy those three guns for Dylan and Eric from the Tanner Gun show. It is terrible what happened in Columbine, but if those boys did not have access to the guns so easily then the sisters, brothers, parents, and friends of those loved ones would not have to be in this predicament. This is just something that I always thought about, what if guns were not so easily accessible, the deaths in this world would decrease; those twelve students and one teacher could still be in this world enjoying their lives to the fullest and that is what makes me furious. Throughout the book it was evident that the boys were up to something, there were several times were their plan could have failed, but everyone was oblivious to the fact that these two boys could have masterminded this plan.
This book had me on the edge of my seat considering I did not hear about anything about this Columbine incident until a class talk and as I started to read this book. I could not understand how the police, Eric’s dad, the friends and family could not have suspected anything from Eric and Dylan. First there was the the police report about Eric's website that was filled with information about Klebold and Harris’s missions and pipe bombs was taken by police but nothing happened. “ This Web page refers to ‘missions’ where possible criminal mischiefs have occurred.Curiously, Burgess made no mention of the pipe bombs, which seems far more serious,” (185). The web site of Eric’s that demonstrated the powerfulness of the bombs, yet Officer Burgess never wrote about the pipe bombs which Eric could then have gotten interviewed or questioned about his pipe bombs and missions. Then there was the one of how the boys friends knew about their guns and pipe bombs but had no idea of the plan of “Judgement Day.” They knew that they were armed with guns and pipe bombs but thought nothing of this. This seems oddly suspicious to me along with many others how they knew this information but the friends of Eric and Dylan thought it was okay. This made others come to the
conclusion that they might have been part of it the “Trench Coat Mafia” and I would have definitely accused the friends of the boys of having part in this massacre because who would not have found it suspicious that they knew the boys were armed yet never said anything. Finally there was the one when Eric bought the clips without his father's knowledge and the clerk said, “ Your clips are in.” Clips? He didn't order any gun clips.(295) This was a very close call for Eric he almost got exposed and his whole plan could have failed, but his dad thought nothing of the call and insisted it was a mistake. These three incidents had happened, yet no one could tell what the boys were up to. Although the boys did not appear to be the psychopathic people they were, there were still many hints given, yet everyone was oblivious of the boys plan. No one could even think that Eric nor Dylan would have been capable of killing 12 students, one teacher, and injuring many. This made me mad, but I wonder just as I stated in journal two, how could you know if someone is a psychopath if they have a front of being someone they are not in front of others? I thought, and thought, and thought and figured out you can not know. So what if the person next to you could be a psychopath and you would never know?
This book was written by Dave Cullen published on April 6th, 2009. This story is a stated form of literature due to Dave Cullen directly stating in this story his reason for writing this book. Cullen was one of the first reporters to arrive to the site of this crime committed by Dylan and Eric, and since the day of this massacre Cullen had then spent ten years to publicize this very informative and crucial information for those who wanted the truth and nothing but the truth. I chose to read this book due to wanting to learn more information, and learn the hard facts and truth of this horrid massacre. I myself was in a similar situation, a school I had gone to had threats of being bombed and shot at, as well as students including myself being threatened to be harmed if they did specific actions or did nothing at all, and I was extremely adamant on learning more about what happened when things, such as the Columbine Highschool Massacre, do
"Columbine High School Shootings." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 08 Sept. 2015. Eighteen year old Eric Harris and seventeen year old Dylan Klebold were two boys with a fascination of violent video games and music. These young men were known to be “goth” and were bullied all throughout their high school careers because of their different interest. In 1999, on April 20th these boys went into their high school with mixed emotions and a devious plan to get revenge. The two teens went into the high school with handguns and killed both students and faculty members, before they turned the guns around on themselves. This is a reliable source because it informed us of both previous emotion, and the aftermath of the tragedy with detail about the boys, the school and the lives affected. This source was relevant for me because of how thoroughly it described the shooting, and gave me background information as to why and how it happened.
Juxtaposing Dylan’s and Eric’s personality traits defies the readers’ expectations. Cullen first uses opposing language to focus on the boys’ conflicting views on the attack. Dylan, Cullen argues, visualized the attack as an escape from reality: he didn’t plan to follow through with it, simply fantasizing about a single attack. Eric, however, truly wanted to destroy everyone. Later, this contrast becomes more prevalent when Cullen remarks, “Eric launched a new charm offensive… he worked his ass off to excel. Dylan didn’t even try to impress Andrea” (258-259). The decision to place the sentences consecutively helps the readers gain insight into the killers’ minds before the attack. By starkly contrasting the murderers’ thoughts, it corrects the misconception that they targeted specific groups of people because they were bullied outcasts. Instead, the readers realize, Eric was quite charming. There was no specific “hit list”, as the media hypothesized, rather the killers planned to murder
During a weekly Bible study, witnesses say a white male came into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and opened fire around 9 p.m. On June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof, 21, entered into this church and opened fire. He killed 9 people that day. The church was primarily African American which also caused the nation to go into a panic and think of one explanation: racism. Whichever viewpoint you see this from; everyone can agree it was a tragedy that innocent lives were taken that day. Many speculate different reasons as to why he committed such an act: racism, mental illness, hate, etc. However, when confronted by someone in the church while committing this tragic action, he said “I have to do it. You rape our women and you 're taking over our
“I understand what they felt in Oklahoma City. I have no sympathy for them,” a remorseless Timothy McVeigh told a Dan Herbeck, author of American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing. Timothy McVeigh was a sort of social outcast who found comfort with the idea of many white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and members of the Aryan Nations. He grew up living in the fantasy of comics and fictional literary works. He was enthralled with guns from a very young age, that carried over into adulthood. He flew through the ranks in the army but was rejected by the rangers. After he was rejected he came back and did not fit into society. McVeigh began going to gun shows; at these events he began to talk to these radicals of all kinds, he
Shootings at Kent State University What happened at Kent State University? This is a question that many Americans were asking following the crisis on the Kent campus. In the days preceding May 4, 1970, protests, disruption, and violence erupted on the university grounds. These acts were the students’ reaction to President Nixon’s invasion of Cambodia.
April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, experienced a mass shooting. Thirteen people were injured and more than twenty were injured. Twelve were students and one was a teacher. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their high school for forty one minutes before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. School shootings are notorious for making headline news but in 1999, school shooting were not as prevalent as they are in the present day. The media blew up on the catastrophe that was Columbine and many questions were raised, who were these kids and why did they do this? Speculation arose about why they did it. Maybe they were bullied for being goth and social outcasts or maybe they
On the day of the Columbine High School Massacre, previously to the attack both Erick D. Harris and Dylan B. Klebold placed a decoy bomb in a field; they had set the bombs to explode at 11:14 to distract police officials. The two boys then headed to the school and entered the commons shortly after 11:14 a.m. and went unnoticed carrying the big duffel bags with propane bombs inside of them. They placed the two twenty pound duffel bags in the cafeteria with the bombs set to explode at 11:17 a.m. They went back outside and armed themselves, they each strapped on an arsenal covered with a trench coat, a semiautomatic, a shotgun, and a backpack full of different types of bombs. The boys then set the timers on the bombs set inside each of their cars outside the school. The boys sat outside armed waiting outside for the bombs to explode and shoot any
Sandy Hook Shooting Conspiracies On December Fourteen 2012 Adam Lanza allegedly drove to Sandy Hook Elementary, his old elementary school, and shot and killed twenty-six students and faculty, then turned the gun on himself before apprehension by police. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was a tragic event, it’s hard not to sympathize with the families of those killed. There is a movement, however, that claims the shooting was fake (Spaeth). IT’s believed the shooting was staged in order to pave the way for stricter gun control (Salazar).
and Dylan Klebold were two teenagers that walked into their high school and killed students while the students were in school. In all, thirteen people were killed by the murderers. The two boys were part of the Trench Coat Mafia that killed a dozen students and a teacher before turning the guns on themselves. Cassie Bernall and other students hid in the library of Co...
The columbine massacre the day where no one is safe in school or out of school. The columbine massacre is about two students named Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris both seniors 17 years old both two weeks before graduating they killed 12 students, one teacher, and 21 injured to their shooting on April 20, 1999. Both Dylan and Eric were some believe they were bullied by the sport teams in their school so they planned to kill the people who bullied them and other mostly anyone who gets in their way but that wasn’t really why the FBI he said that there target was everyone no one in pacify we will not get in to more details now. Dylan and Eric were both intelligent boys with solid parents and a good home and both had brothers younger than them. They played soccer, baseball, and both enjoyed to work on computers. Both boys were thinking on commit suicide on 1997 but instead started to plan a massacre in 1998 a year before it happened. Then the two boys had got into some trouble for breaking into a van on January 30, 1998 trying to steal some fuses and wires for bombs for them to make, but they got caught in trouble. So the court put them in a program called the juvenile diversion program, but even if they were there they were still planning the massacre and the court also put Eric in some angry management classes and people believe it worked but it didn’t he just did it to look like it work and both boys made it look like they were really sorry but they weren’t. Dylan and Eric both really hated everyone in their school and the court as well after they got caught breaking in to that van that’s when they really started to plan the massacre more and that’s when Harris started he’s journals no one really knows way but they didn’t hate a hand...
Crime manifests itself in various ways in society and oftentimes difficult to pinpoint what drives people to commit certain actions. The Columbine shooting was a particular incident that ended in tears and suffering which resulted in numerous research as to what was going through the minds of these young individuals at the time of the shooting. Therefore, this paper will analyze specifically the role of differential association- reinforcement as altered by Akers in propelling Dylan Klebold to commit such heinous act, while also giving credit to Edwin Sutherland for first formulating the framework of differential association.
Cullen explains in his book that a study done after the shooting identifies contributing factors to most if not all shootings. These contributing factors are an exact match to the research results of Leary et al. After the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, a “National poll taken shortly after the attack would identify all sorts of culprits contributing to the tragedy: violent movies, video games, Goth culture, lax gun laws, bullies, and Satan” ( Cullen p.107).
Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States society and have brought our society's safety debate to the attention of American politics. Both sides of the debate agree that we need more safety precautions but neither side can officially agree on what is to be done. What can we do about the raging number of mass shootings? There is no definite solution for mass shootings but there are precautions the United States can take to try to overcome the overwhelming number of mass shootings occurring. Gun Control is a major topic in the debate of how we can keep our society safer but how is what remains a mystery but we can start with altering the second amendment, and having stronger gun laws and background checks.
The second story was recap of the year. It talks about the shooting in the black church and the debate over the Confederate flag. It then talks about the two decisions made over the summer about the Affordable Care Act and the Same Sex Marriage Act. After that, it talks about Pope Francis and the Takata incident. Finally it talks about the Patriots and the three inmates who escaped prison only to be shot or put back behind bars. Finally, it talks about the presidential debate.
