Dwarfism
Life with dwarfism can be simple. However, it can also be challenging at times. The disease can delay your human instincts like sitting up and crawling. It might have constant ear infections and could become deaf. It could make it hard to breathe while sleeping. It can also cause arthritis in adulthood. In Barbara Walters Dwarfism interview with a dwarf family, [Georgia Family Happy to Be 'The Real Life Seven Dwarfs'. By Lauren Putrino and Jennifer Joseph via 20/20, May 4, 2012.] it was stated that “‘People sometimes calls me midget. I just ...
Then there is the physically crippled who know what happens if they outlive their usefulness. Next to that there's the physical barrier of being a black person in a racial, conscious society. All in all, being crippled physically, socially or emotionally was just a way of life back in the thirty's. Lennie is the major cause of George being crippled socially and emotionally.
What comes into one’s mind when they are asked to consider physical disabilities? Pity and embarrassment, or hope and encouragement? Perhaps a mix between the two contrasting emotions? The average, able-bodied person must have a different perspective than a handicapped person, on the quality of life of a physically disabled person. Nancy Mairs, Andre Dubus, and Harriet McBryde Johnson are three authors who shared their experiences as physically handicapped adults. Although the three authors wrote different pieces, all three essays demonstrate the frustrations, struggles, contemplations, and triumphs from a disabled person’s point of view and are aimed at a reader with no physical disability.
In Oceania, love is cast aside and adoration for Big Brother is put in its place. Two people, Winston and Julia, developed a love for one another that is distinct from relationships in Oceania. These lovers must meet in secret and pretend that they do not know one another while they are in public. Due to their circumstances, the two experience isolation from the other citizens as a result of their strong emotions. In 1984, the glass paperweight that contains the small coral represents the fragile relationship of Winston and Julia and their forbidden love life.
Many people would say that the actors were never treated with dignity and that many of the jokes in the movie were made at the actors’ expense (Crouse 213). The film is entirely politically incorrect, but that is what has made the movie ironically interesting and so popular. When the amateur cast took the job they knew what the movie would be like. The actors took their job seriously, and many of the actor went on to play roles in other movies (Simpson 208). Billy Curtis, however, generally avoided roles that undermined midgets. He was upset to see the movie posters advertising “Half-Pints in 10-Gallon Hats!” Later in his life Billy worked as an advocate for equal rights for little people. He worked against the Screen Actors Guild to allow little people full membership and full voting privileges
Pierre Maroteaux was the first person to mention dwarfism. He is largely credited for the discovery. He discovered the link between the genetic condition and prenatal micromelic in patients. The discovery was known as Lamy-Maroteaux Syndrome which is a very important topic when you are talking about dwarfism. In 1994, Pierre and his team discovered the reasoning behind dwarfism. (who discovered it? March 28, 2014.) The prognosis for achondroplasia has a normal life expectancy. There are just some health issues that come with this genetic disorder like a large head, crowded teeth, bowed legs, shortened trunk, and weak hands. They are still able to do everyday things, they just have to have to be able to conform to the everyday life. Some people think that dwarfs are not as intelligent as a normal sized person but they are. Some dwarfs even go into medical school and become doctors just like an average person would. (right diagnosis March 28, 2014.)
There are some really gross and demeaning ways in which short statured people are exploited such as dwarf throwing contests, dwarf wrestling, and generally, the portrayal of short statured people in movies and television that endows them with ‘special’ characteristics (either evil or good).
There are many disabilities that affect the Musculoskeletal System. One disability is Spina Bifida, which is a series of spinal cord defects caused by abnormal fetal development. We don’t know all the causes of spina bifida. Genetics and the environment may play a role in causing spina bifida. Spina bifida can range from mild to extreme. Some people may have little to no disability while others people may be limited in the way they move. Some people may even be paralyzed or unable to walk or move parts of their body. Although, most people affected by spina bifida lead full and productive lives. There are three types which include myelomeningocele, occulta, and meningocele. Depending on the classification there will be different characteristics and symptoms. It may be treated in different setting, with different potential treatment ideas.
When you walk into a room of people look around you at everybody. Can you pick out one or two people who suffer from a learning disability? Simply by looking at me Could you tell I do. Even educators did not realize that I had dyslexia. Unfortunately, they did not see the signs. I would like to share with you, how I have endeavored obstacles throughout life and still do, to this day.
As Little Big Man, directed by Arthur Penn opens up and introduces the Main character Jack Crabb, the sole survivor of General Custer’s last stand, tells the modern day historian about his multiple experiences in life. I felt as if the plot of the movie was a bit intricate , Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman)multiple professions or hobbies are a bit too outlandish for one individual. But these different hobbies added some humor to the plot which balanced out the complexity of the plot. It was amusing that Jack had many different lives all encompassed into one life.
The Autonomic Nervous System is responsible for the functions of the body that are not thought about to control. When this system dysfunctions, it can cause havoc on the human body. One example of this would be Dysautonomia. Dysautonomia is a rare but serious disease that affects the autonomic nervous system, has many symptoms, and offers few treatment options.
There are many disorders or syndromes that cause people to behave and act differently than others. Out of all these syndromes, I picked one of them. This is a very rare syndrome and an estimate of 4% of children in the U.S. have it. It is known as the translocation down syndrome. Translocation down syndrome is a type of down syndrome caused by rearranged chromosome material. A child with translocation down syndrome has 3 #21 chromosomes instead of the two pairs. Here, one of the chromosomes is attached to another and the extra chromosome is what causes the health problems is what causes the health problems associated with the disorder known as down syndrome.
Any child can be born with Down syndrome, which could include your child. Many people don’t really down what Down syndrome is. Around the entire world not many really know what Down syndrome really is and the importance of it. Down syndrome has different causes that one should know about. There are many different types of health issues with Down syndrome. Down syndrome defines all the causes and the different health issues that Down syndrome holds.
Some characteristics of DS are: deep folds at the corners of the eyes, hypotonia, short stature, flexible joints, small oral cavity and heart defects (Taylor, Richards, & Brady, 2005). Most individuals with DS have a moderate intellectual disability, although there is a range of disability, from severe to high functioning (IQ above 70). Since DS is a birth defect and not a disease, there are no treatment options. Improvement can be made through physicians, special education, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and psychol...
Now, children with intellectual disabilities are respected, and cared for just like anyone else. This was not true prior to the mid 19th century. People and doctors feared them and they were often ignored. As time continued throughout history things changed for the better. Some people may have believed that someone either had an intellectual disability or not, but this is not true. There are different levels to it. Children with an intellectual disability can and do attend regular schools with a little extra help, but they do experience emotional and behavior problem along the way. Not all causes for intellectual disabilities can be found, but there are a few known ones. With all of this said, there are ways to prevent intellectual dishabilles and ways to treat it as well.
“Dwarfism” is a term used to describe the condition of those whose bodies are significantly smaller than the average person’s.A dwarf may suffer from medical problems, which can lead to many deformities and complications throughout life. The deformities of some dwarfs, according to the Little People’s Research Fund website, can lead to extensive disabilities, paralysis, and even death.Over one and a half million people in the United States suffer from some condition of dwarfism (Billy Barty). What many do not know, however, is that most dwarfs are born to families that have no history of dwarfism in their families.
