Christopher Nolan is a well known movie producer, with his name associated with films like the The Dark Night, Inception, and Interstellar. His newest film that was released over the summer was the film Dunkirk, a movie that portrayed the evacuation from the French beach of Dunkirk, which was under Nazi occupation, during the Second World War. I believe that this film is worth reviewing as a form of public history, as the name Dunkirk is usually something that is known by the general public in its association with World War II. However, this movie could be a way for the general public to learn about the events in Dunkirk, without having to open a textbook. I saw this film myself when it came out over the summer, and I had to say that I was impressed with how the …show more content…
Things were looking grim for the Allies “the growing failure of communications had now made … a large proportion of the RAF to return to England” as the German Luftwaffe was shooting down to many British planes. The movie is basically split into three parts: the air, the sea and on the ground to show the point of view from different perspectives of the evacuation. It was at this point when an order was made to the people of England “requesting all owners of self-propelled pleasure craft … to send all particulars to the Admiralty within 14 days from today”. These pleasure crafts were to be used to help evacuating the trapped soldiers, as the British believed that the Germans would not take a second look at boats like these crossing the channel. Since many naval destroyers had been bombed by planes, or torpedoed by U-boats. As a result of the use of these pleasure crafts “338,226 soldiers were lifted to safety” making the evacuation at Dunkirk the largest military evacuation in
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best movies portraying loneliness and nerds. It is the story of Napoleon in high school and his lonely adventures. All the main characters feel separated, misunderstood, and have nobody to relate to. Napoleon has no friends and lives in his own fantasy land. He is avoided by everybody. His brother seems to be mislead, wanting to be a cage fighter but staying home all the time hopelessly trying to find love and attention on the internet. Their grandmother is never there for them, though she lives her own life right beside them. They live next to a huge field, reinforcing their isolation. Practically every home in the film is
Rogue One not only surpasses the other films in the franchise, but it does so in a clear and well thought out way. It's a film that had no reason to exist but it does meaningfully with a concise plot. The exposition event is when Director Orson Krennic invades Jyn Else's home and tries to make her father Galen Erso work with the Empire. This ends poorly and the Empire killed Galens wife and takes Galen into their ship while Jyn barely escapes. Rising action then takes place when Jyn, K-2SO and Cassian arrives at the holy city of Jedha. They soon discover Saw Gerrera and find out that they need to get the Death Star plans. They then head to Eadu to find Galen Erso and after sometime arguing head to the Imperial’s base on Scariff. The climax occurs when Jyn Erso is about to send the Death Star plans to the rebellion but confronts Krennic. Cassian defeats him and he goes with Jyn to the beach while the watch the planet blows up. The falling action is when Darth vader inceps the Death Star plans but the rebels escape. The resolution is when Prisons Leia is asked what the plans mean and she says Hope.

To be honest I never thought much of WWII until I saw Band of Brothers. They did a good job of really showing, the horrific side of the war. Even though the war needed to happen it was not at all an easy thing for these soldiers. I was aware that many deaths occurred, but I had never realized the way the soldiers died. My perception of the war changed dramatically. I felt the heartbreak of the soldier who watched others die. I can only imagine the broken lives of the families back home that found out they lost their loved ?one.
... which would increase morale of both the troops and the population. He also uses a metaphor and emotive language to slightly exaggerate the forces victory but it makes the evacuation sound such as an extreme success with the language emphasising the men’s ability to hold their morale; which was shown in source C where the men were firing upon enemy aircraft. He also focuses on the men’s lives rather than the major losses of equipment, which although gets a mention it is encompassed mid-sentence since it is not seen as much of a failure as the men’s lives being saved is a success, this is important as it is the major deliverance that Taylor was mentioning in his quote. He also claims that the forces refused to accept defeat, however this claim is entirely contrived since the evacuation was a final resort after defeat to the German forces in Europe
Evaluating the Success of Dunkirk There are many opinions on how successful Dunkirk was; one point of
The Dunkirk evacuation took place during World War II (WWII). This was “...the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk...to England” (Encyclopædia Britannica). Shortly before Operation Dynamo –‒ the evacuation of Dunkirk –‒ began, the German soldiers swept through the West, “...storming into Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg with lightning speed” (Dunkirk Evacuation Ends). Operation Dynamo was the beginning of a mass exodus. Over a week time span, over 338,000 men were rescued, far surpassing the initial estimate of 30,000 rescues. This was capable due to the assistance of boat owners working unanimously for the same cause, sailing to rescue as many men as they were capable
The events that were portrayed in “Black Hawk Down” drastically affected the U.S.’ foreign policy during the 1990’s. The U.S soldiers went into a country in East Africa called Somalia. They went into the one city, Mogadishu, to capture top lieutenants of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The mission was only supposed to take an hour, but it ended up lasting the entire night into the next morning. It was a short war that the U.S. never wanted to get into.
After heavy defeats in Normandy in July and August 1944, the remnants of the German troops were retreating from France through Benelux to German borders. In German lines was spreading desertion. Units disintegrated in the fight were escaping in all direction from the front back to Germany. Fast progressing of western Allies caused difficulties in supply, as the fighting was getting away from beaches. The whole Allied troops were supplied through the Normandy beaches and harbor Cherbourg. The Germans knew about the Allies problems and tried to keep ports as long as possible. The Allied Forces had trouble delivering supplies from the port to the advancing troops; they were progressing faster than the supplies could be delivered. They created so called “Red Ball Express” -supply system supported by 5,900 trucks. However, its mistake was that it consumed a lot of fuel.
“Glory” is a 1989 war film based on the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the civil war (18861-1865). It stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Care Elwes, and Morgan Freeman. It was directed by Edward Zwick, and the screenplay was written by Kevin Jarre who was inspired by two books, One Gallant Rush: Robert Gould Shaw and His Brave Black Regiment (1989) and Lay This Laurel (1973). The story is told largely through Colonel Robert Gould Shaw’s perspective and what he experiences throughout the war.
...ey were on what one my consider a suicide mission because the Devastators were out of date, slow, and would not have enough fuel to make it back to the carriers. These men sacrificed their lives for this battle.
Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" and Joe Wright's "Darkest Hour" both focus on the dramatic events of 1940, each with its unique narrative approach. They balance perpetuating popular myths and striving for historical accuracy, shaping how we view these significant moments in history. By looking at these films alongside David Luhrssen's insights from "World War II on Film" and Joe Wright's interview with BHT, we can better understand how movies influence our perception of history. Dunkirk is known for its gripping storytelling and technical excellence. Nolan’s film uses a non-linear narrative to depict the evacuation from three perspectives: land, sea, and air.
The movie Greyhound tells the story of a United States destroyer crossing the Atlantic Ocean during the Battle of the Atlantic. The Allied and Axis powers fought over the Atlantic Ocean during the Battle of the Atlantic. The victory of the battle gave the Allies the upper hand (Hughes & Milner, 2024). Greyhound shows the stress and pain Greyhound’s crew, especially Captain Ernest Krause, had to go through to get the convoy across the Atlantic. Watching sailors constantly work to stay alive while obstacles are coming, giving them no time to think, shows the viewer how terrible World War II was and how beneficial it was that the Allied Powers’ Navy persevered against the Germans.
Introduction The Black Hawk Down movie is about in Somalia in the 1990s a civil war has broken out within the country. During the civil war over 300,000 civilian deaths and the peacekeepers had to withdraw from Somalia. In response to this the United States sent their army to help stop the civil war. Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders of our time. In the movie Invictus, the devotion and love he had for the South African people is exemplified. The movie was named after a Victorian poem that brought President Mandela strength while in prison. The meaning of Invictus is “Undefeated”, a perfect fit for this movie. The opening scene of the movie shows President Mandela being freed from jail and driving past a field of young boys playing soccer. All the boys start chanting the Presidents name and running to the fences to get a better look. This is the first scene, and an obvious show of support and following for Mr. Mandela. Throughout the movie there are many different styles and approaches of leadership shown. Not only is President
