Of the two essay’s I had to choose from in my reader’s choice options I decided on “The Good Short Life” by Dudley Clendinen. A very strong subject on this essay and with a powerful message sent by the author himself about life. The rhetorical pattern, narration, is used by Clendinen to help successfully deliver his message with personal details about choices Clendinen made about his life.
In 2005, David Wallace Foster delivered a memorable commencement speech to the graduating class of Kenyon College. It was not the standard US commencement speech with “the deployment of didactic little parable-ish stories” which then turn out to be “one of the better, less bullshitty conventions of the genre”. By using pathos , Foster created an intelligent argument that wasn't overpowering but thoughtful and understanding. The argument made by Foster in his speech is about the capital-T Truth. And to Foster, the capital-T Truth is about life before death. The point of Fosters speech is to expose the importance of education, the value it possesses and the awareness it brings. Its modest amount parables, proverbs and cliches revealed the honesty behind his words and ugly truths that caused a stir the audience. Wallace Foster stripped away the standardness of such monotone and basic writing of commencement speeches to his advantage. By using pathos he builds bridges, sustains his arguments and emotionally influences his audience.
In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting three inspirational people and their experiences on reading and writing. Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, and Sandra Cisneros all had different opinions about it. All of them overcame struggles that were different but similar in some way. What really intrigued me was that they followed their hearts in what they wanted to do even though people told them they couldn't.
Nearly everyone has a dream in life that they desperately want to accomplish. Without these dreams people wouldn’t strive to accomplish what makes them happy. Sometimes happiness might be hard to reach because of obstacles faced in life. The obstacles which one faces and how they can overcome them are remarked in Anne Lauren’s Carter short story “Leaving the Iron Lung”. In order for the author to show that one must overcome faced obstacles to pursue their dreams, she uses the protagonist transformation, contrasting characters and settings.

In many short stories, characters face binding situations in their lives that make them realize more about themselves when they finally overcome such factors. These lively binding factors can result based on the instructions imposed by culture, custom, or society. They are able to over come these situations be realizing a greater potential for themselves outside of the normality of their lives. Characters find such realizations through certain hardships such as tragedy and insanity.
Conflict is an important part of any short story. The short story, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding,” contains three major conflicts: man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. himself. In this essay, I intend to explain, prove, and analyze these three struggles.

He notes two instances of men who were planning on committing suicide who, once they were able to find meaning in their lives and their futures, were able to find the will to live. I enjoyed Alice Munro’s and Tolstoy’s short stories the most as they taught me about certain things regarding life’s negative and positive shifts and the choices we make in this life regarding money versus happiness that I could have only understood through experience in dozens of years. I plan to read more Tolstoy, Chopin, Munro, and dystopian novels such as Divergence to deepen my understanding more about women’s issues, alternative societies, choices regarding happiness versus occupational prestige, and life’s ups and down. I want to be able to live as many lives as possible, and I know that one of the key venues for that is through reading more and more each day. This class was only the beginning of an amazing journey in my life that I will never give up in law school or beyond. Thank you so much for instilling such passion and knowledge in us Dr. Ballenger!
When analyzing Hard Times a number of different points will be found. Although, short in page length the story is elaborate and can be interpreted in an endless number of way. It is however doubtless that the story is mean to be a work that bring the explores the major issued of its time and which shines a light on the darkness that accompanied the industrial revolution and utilitarianism.
