'Dubliners' was published in 1914 and creates a microcosm of the state of decay and paralysis that Dublin was in, through James Joyce's 'nicely polished looking glass'. It clearly presents how the stagnant life paralysed the hopes and dreams of Dublin's inhabitants. Through realistic characters, such as Eveline, Joyce exemplifies how the city itself was the 'centre of paralysis' and thus the cause of the loss of hopes and dreams that affects so many characters in the collection. Joyce creates Eveline as a dull and monotonous character. The story begins as she sits idle at her window, contemplating a better life. The window symbolises how Eveline, and many other characters, reflect on their own lives without the strength of purpose to bring about change. She displays an overall lack of ambition, as she watches others pass by, going somewhere with a purpose; Joyce creates a comparison with the inclusion of 'a man from Belfast', as Belfast was in a state of great change and industrialism, when in comparison Dublin was dark and repressive, thus affecting the characters ambitions and overall purpose. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth is presented as a determined and ambitious character, with the strength of will to do anything to achieve her goals: 'And shalt be what thou art promis'd', this exclamation clearly displays her boldness. This strong and active nature is the antithesis of a normal Jacobean female and highlights Eveline's passiveness when deciding her future. Furthermore, Eveline's overall inactiveness is emphasised when she reviews her life in Ireland. Instead of journeying forward into a new exciting life, Eveline is trapped brooding on her past; 'Father was not so bad then' she decides. This statement, lacking in any en... ... middle of paper ... ...come to no meaningful end, with the majority of people repeating their same mundane days repetitively. Dublin was stunted, unable to move forward under Home Rule and without an established and contented union with Britain. In contrast, Shakespeare adheres to the traditional concepts of writing, as 'Macbeth' includes all the typical points to any narrative. Conclusively, both Joyce and Shakespeare successfully present their characters for their intended purposes. Eveline is trapped in a repressive Dublin; unable to move forward or change her life independently. Lady Macbeth on the other hand was strong and independent, a complete opposite of Eveline. Although, the fact that both these women focused on the past heavily eventually leads to their inability to move forward; Lady Macbeth committing suicide and Eveline being left in Dublin, stuck within a repetitive cycle.
Lady Macbeth was “choked with ambition”. Her infatuation to be queen is the single feature that Shakespeare developed far beyond that of her counterpart in the historical story he used as his source. Lady Macbeth persistently taunts her husband for his lack of courage, even though we know of his bloody deeds on the battlefield. At this point in time, with all her will converging towards seizing the throne, she has shown no signs of remorse or hesitance in her actions and hence preventing the events in the narrative from digressing away from imperative themes and climaxes of the play.

James Joyce author of Dubliners, is a book which examines the everyday life of people who live in Dublin. In this intimate portrayal of Dubliners, Joyce writes short stories about the individuals in Irish society. In Dubliners many characters feel the pressure of society, and show their desires to escape. In the stories “Eveline”, “Counterparts” and “The Dead”, the themes of individuals v. society and journey through escape are present. In each story there is a powerful person present that controls a particular person or situation. In Dublin jobs are very important, since they control the social standing in their society. Dublin itself is a major issue to the characters in Dubliners; they wrestle with the ideas of being able to escape.
Madness, curiously, forces her back into the stereotypical femininity that her transgressive yearning for imperial power had repudiated¨ (Gilbert). This loss could be described as nothing less than an injustice of Lady Macbeth's character. Analysis of Macbeth almost always concludes that Lady Macbeth is evil and nothing else, nevertheless, her need for power, even by extension of her husband, led to murder. Her belittling, even in modern literary texts, shows how deeply imbedded the idea of women being the Other has become. Lady Macbeth could represent a powerful, and obviously flawed, character instead of simply an extension or backdrop for Macbeth. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth is not the only woman in Macbeth and certainly not the only one who sought or even achieved power. The three witches were almost their own breed of women with their own type of power. "Eveline" is the story of a young teenager facing a dilemma where she has to choose between living with her father or escaping with Frank, a sailor which she has been courting for some time. The story is one of fifteen stories written by James Joyce in a collection called "Dubliners". These stories follow a certain pattern that Joyce uses to express his ideas: "Joyce's focus in Dubliners is almost exclusively on the middle-class Catholics known to himself and his family"(the Gale Group). Joyce's early life, family background, and his catholic background appear in the way he writes these stories. "Where Joyce usually relates his stories to events in his life, there are some stories which are actually events that took place in his life" (Joyce, Stanislaus). James Joyce in his letter to Grant Richard writes:
To conclude, Lady Macbeth is a multifaceted character, her persona having many sides; notably: genuine goodness towards her husband, coy manipulation, and femininity. It is therefore inaccurate to define her as purely evil; despite the means by which she desires to accomplish her fantastical end. For all Lady Macbeth’s drive and determination, she eventually loses her dominant role, captive until her demise to her inescapable femininity.
In Dubliners, James Joyce tells short stories of individuals struggling with life, in the city of Dublin. “It is a long road that has no turning” (Irish Proverb). Many individuals fight the battle and continue on the road. However, some give up and get left behind. Those who continue to fight the battle, often deal with constant struggle and suffering. A reoccurring theme, in which Joyce places strong emphasis on, is the constant struggle of fulfilling responsibilities. These responsibilities include; work, family and social expectations. Joyce writes about these themes because characters often feel trapped and yearn to escape from these responsibilities. In “The Little Cloud”, “Counterparts”, and “The Dead” characters are often trapped in unhappy living situations, often leading to a desire of escape from reality and daily responsibilities.
Initially, Lady Macbeth is introduced as a dominant, controlling, heartless wife with the ambition to achieve kingship for her husband. These words are characteristics of today’s woman. She does not let her husband run her life, but instead, a modern woman seeks the best for both herself and her husband. This weak, unsure, and unstable condition of Lady Macbeth, which is only revealed towards the end of the play, displays the characteristics of a woman from the Elizabethan times. However, the audience begins to see hints of this hidden nature by the way Macbeth addresses her.
Search for Meaning in James Joyce's Dubliners Throughout Dubliners James Joyce deliberately effaces the traditional markers of the short story: causality, closure, etc. In doing so, "the novel continually offers up texts which mark their own complexity by highlighting the very thing which traditional realism seeks to conceal: the artifice and insufficiency inherent in a writer's attempt to represent reality.(Seidel 31)" By refusing to take a reductive approach towards the world(s) he presents on the page - to offer up "meaning" or "ending" - Joyce moves the reader into complex and unsettling epistemological and ontological realms. Meaning is no longer unitary and prescriptive, the author will not reveal (read impose) what the story "means" at its close and therefore we can't definitively "know" anything about it. Instead, meaning, like modernism, engenders its own multiplicity in Joyce's works, diffuses into something necessarily plural: meanings. An ontological crisis is inextricable from this crisis of meaning and representation.

Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, pursues her goals with greater determination, yet she is less capable of withstanding the repercussions of her immoral acts. One of Shakespeare's most forcefully drawn female characters, she spurs her husband mercilessly to kill Duncan and urges him to be strong in the murder's aftermath, but she is eventually driven to distraction by the effect of Macbeth's repeated bloodshed on her conscience. In each case, ambition, helped, of course, by the malign prophecies of the witches, is what drives the couple to ever more terrible atrocities. The problem, the play suggests, is that once one decides to use violence to further one?s quest for power, it is difficult to stop. There are always potential threats to the throne?Banquo, Fleance, Macduff?and it is always tempting to use violent means to dispose of them.
In the story “Eveline”, Joyce’s main character Eveline has ambitions to escaper her life in Ireland. For the main part of the story she is waiting in front of a window ready to leave for a new life with her lover Frank. “She stood up in a sudden impulse of terror. Escape! She must escape” (29). This illustrates the theme of escape by showing her dissatisfaction with her life in Ireland. She is reluctant due to a promise made to her mother to stay and take care of her family. Being an independent person she longs to leave Ireland however, she decides to stay at the end of the story with complete awareness of her decision. “NO! No! No! It was impossible. Her hands clutched the iron in frenzy” (34). She could leave her father and live a happy life instead she lives this displeasing life. Eveline is overwhelmed by her unending struggle with her will to leave.

Eveline is an individual stuck in the boring routine of life, but is given the opportunity to take a chance and possibly make a better life for herself by leaving Dublin and going to Buenos Ayres with a man who she loves named Frank. However, in the end, Eveline chooses to not take the opportunity given to her and instead decides to continue with the monotonous routine of her life in Dublin. Many authors of short stories allow the reader to make their own judgments about characters. However, Joyce decides to show his frustration with Eveline at the end of the story and judges her harshly. In fact, Joyce goes as far as to call Eveline a “helpless animal”.
