July 9, 2016, a tragic car accident killed three friends of mine and injured two. The driver was negligent and under the influence of alcohol, driving 80 mph down a 25 mph side street. Should he have been let go because it was his first offense or should prison time come into place? People should think before they get behind the wheel. Alcohol hits close to home for me. My great grandmother was a real bad alcoholic, and so were my uncles. Even my own mother drinks from times to time. So, I know from seeing others that is close to me suffer from the effects alcohol have on them. They make careless mistakes unknowingly yet it was their choice to pick up a bottle so they have to deal with the consequences. Drunk driving is uncaring of. Car accidents occur every day, but if there are not many/no drunk drivers behind the wheel and on the streets they will significantly decrease. First, according to mudd.org, in 2014, 9,967 people were killed in an alcohol-impaired car accident. That accounts for nearly one third of all traffic deaths. 10,076 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2013. That’s one every 53 minutes. Another example from Everyday in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. It might look misdeed to imprison a driver when caught by the act on their first time, but it's true that imprisonment helps drivers regenerate. This reduces the frequency of accidents that involuntary manslaughter innocent people. Last but not least, evidence suggests that most road accidents are caused by drunk drivers who lose control when driving. Yet everyday people drive drunk 300,000 times but less than 4,000 get arrested (intoxalock.com). Others are simply let go or have to call for a ride.
