I strongly believe the boy was too young to go into the war. The Drummer Boy of Shiloh is about a fourteen year old boy who is to young to go into war. His role in the war was to beat the drum. this historical fiction written by Ray Braddford. The drummer boy of shiloh has many uses of symbolism such as drums and caps.
First the drums is an example of the use. The drums were connected to the battle because shiloh was beating it. Charley is the main character in the book Soldier's Heart, He is going into the war at Fort Snelling. Charley was very young especially for war, he enlisted to the union at the age of fifteen. The war needed more soldiers, so Charley lied about his age and enlisted. Once Charley got in the war he completely changed his mind.

Additionally, it is important to note how prevalently longer sentences are incorporated within the text to suggest the plethora of items they carry in common for the war, as O’Brien elaborates, “They carried M-14s and CAR-15s and Swedish Ks and grease guns and captured AK-47s and Chi-Coms and RPGs…” (7). In this case O’Brien’s inclusion of “and” allows him to extend his sentences in order to convey how uniform the soldier’s identities have become due to the war, as they are now only responsible for carrying their necessary weapons and equipment. Another passage that suggests the soldiers’ uniformity is when O’Brien depicts their lifelessness while marching by claiming, “They marched for the sake of the march. They plodded along slowly, dumbly, leaning forward against the heat, unthinking, all blood and bone, simple grunts…but no volition, no will, because it was automatic,” (15).
The Things They Carried describes real objects American soldiers carried during the war. They carried an M-60, a .45-caliber pistol, an assault rifle, ammunition, compass, maps, code books, the PRC-25 radio, sandbags, tanning lotion, toilet paper, tranquilizers, rabbit’s foot, Purple Hearts, diseases, the wounded, the weak, and the land itself. Many soldiers experienced horrific events in Vietnam. War affects the mind. O’Brien said, “We all got problems.” (O’Brien 18). O’Brien relates one example of the war’s negative effect when a soldier shoots a baby water buffalo. He not only wants to kill the animal, but to make it suffer. Silence disturbs soldiers. In the short story “Chickamauga”, the author Ambrose Bierce uses a young boy to connect to his audience with what is the disillusions of war, then leads them into the actuality and brutalities of war. Bierce uses a six year old boy as his instrument to relate to his readers the spirits of men going into combat, then transferring them into the actual terrors of war.

One of the significant concepts in The Things They Carried is that of the importance of certain objects or feelings used by the soldiers of Alpha Company to survive the war. Some examples of these items are the picture of the girl carried by Jimmy Cross, the Bible carried by Kiowa, and the stockings carried by Henry Dobbins. All the items helped the respective soldier to survive from day to day and to continue fighting the war. One of the most important things that helped the soldiers is their friendship with each other. This bond that the soldiers form helped them to survive, excluded someone who was outside their group, and helped the men of Alpha Company to cope with the war after they returned to the United States.
When the prisoners formed the choir it was the first act in the ‘rebel’ against the Japanese and brought all people hope in the camp that even if they were there and things happened they would not let it bring them down. The power of the human spirit was so strong that all the prisoners in the camp were filled with hope and a joy that the detainers could not take from them.
In "The Soldier", Brooke's firm patriotism towards England is shown through two different points of view--the octet illustrating what will happen when he dies in battle and the sestet describing the afterlife. He believes that if he should be remembered for anything, it would be that he is English. He even goes as far as stating that "In that rich earth a richer dust concealed," meaning that if he were to die on a foreign land, its soil would be made better because a piece of England would be buried along with him. The entire poem glorifies England as Brooke incorporates it into a sonnet, includes various forms of imagery, and also develops his admiration towards his country by describing it through positive connotation.
In “Beat! Beat! Drums!” Whitman shows his view of what he thinks will the coming war will bring. His poem describes a noise played by drums being extremely loud. I believe the noise being played represents the importance of the coming war. He says “Leave not the bridegroom quiet—no happiness must he have now with his bride; nor the peaceful farmer any peace plowing his field or gathering his grain.” He is saying that the music should play so loud that it should not be quiet anywhere. I believe that he is saying that the war will be the main focus and everything else will be unimportant. This fits with Whitman’s important features in his poems, which are content and emotion. Every time we had visited Williamsburg, my mother had always wanted to see the famous Fife and Drum Corps. Dressed in full costume of red coats and tri-corner hats, these re-enactors parade down the Duke of Gloucester Street playing their instruments in a “call to arms” of the town’s militia. These men have always been one of the main attractions of Williamsburg and one of the symbols of the colonial area. They perform only once or twice a week and by either bad luck or fate, my mother has never actually seen them march. The single time that she did wait for their performance to start, it was cancelled due to bad weather.
