Freshman year of high school always seems to be the tougher year. People you thought were friends end up changing their ways and become a whole new person. High school is when a person’s personality really shows. Everyone finds who they are inside, and they find others like them. Some try to move up the popularity pole, and will do anything to reach the top. Others seem to just fade away out of existence because of drugs. My friend Todd was one that just disappeared from my life.
At the beginning of freshman year, I didn’t know many other people at my school. All of my friends choose to go to another school that was in our district. I was in the cafeteria talking to one of my friends when she introduced me to a guy named Todd. We got to talking and found out we are a lot a like. We both planned on trying out for baseball in the spring, we live close to each other, and we went to the same middle school. Our humor was pretty much on the same level, I would try anything to get a laugh out of him.
After freshman year had ended, and we became best friends, I found out he smoked pot. This didn’t really bother me because he said he only did it a couple times a month. I knew he wouldn’t try to get me to do it because he was a true friend. He had a party right after school started up in August, and a bunch of our friends were there, and so was some of his that I had never met before. Weed and alcohol were at the party but he only asked me once if I wanted any. I told him no and he left it at that.
As school went on, he started to do it a little more. Again he would ask me more continuously if I wanted to do it. I held firm in my answer until he sat and smoked in front of me on night. I sat and watched him do it for a while. As all the smoke came out around me, I did feel a something, a little happier, like I didn’t care about anything at the time.
James Desmond Booth, who is presently 30, had received good grades all throughout all his years in school and had a good family life, after being adopted by his grandparents. He also played varsity basketball in his hometown, at New Smyrna Beach High School. His grandmother, Beulah Booth, stated that her grandson was also a good father to his daughter and infant son, while other family members suggested that he loved his young children and he continues to make contributions in their lives. It is peculiar that a man with these beginnings and familial connections went on to receive seven felony convictions, with some including “possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon” (Frederick 2014 p.1: Sept. 29, 2009). After sitting in on the current trial brought against Mr. Booth and taking notes, sociological theories of crime were utilized to help to interpret the previous actions of this particular man’s history of misconduct.
Every person has different personalities that they develop during different stages in life. Many personalities start with parents and how they educate their children. That is the basis of who someone is. Once you get older you start to finally try and figure out who you are. High school can be either the best or the worst place to figure it out. High school is usually thought of a new scary place when starting freshmen year. There are kids who will be older and you will meet different types of people that you might have never met before. The way parents treat their kids can affect their school life. Meaning that if student’s lives at home are not good living conditions that can cause a gap between other students at school. The movie Carrie made in 1976, Carrie was bullied at school but also in way by the hands of her mother who also bullied her at home.
High school. It’s tough. Especially if you’re a freshman. Everything changes when you get to high school. You start to notice specific people more, your friends start to change, and even your likes and dislikes change. These may just sound like the typical high school cliche sayings, but in the novel Sleeping Freshman Never Lie, written by David Lubar, Scott Hudson had to go through all of that in just his first year of high school. Throughout the novel, Scott Hudson encounters many changes in his freshman year of high school including, the arrival of a new baby sibling, friends coming and leaving, being on student council, writing for the school’s newspaper, working on the school’s play, all while he is chasing the “girl of his dreams”. The
school years he turned to marijuana because he had to deal with several personal problems.
The following two paragraphs are a summary of Gloria Jimenez's essay Against the Odds and Against the Common Good. States should neither allow nor encourage state-run lotteries. There are five major arguments that people use to defend lotteries. One is that most lotteries are run honestly, but if gambling is harmful to society it is irrelevant to argue if they are honest or not. The second is that lotteries create jobs, but there are only a small handful of jobs that would be eliminated if lotteries were put out of business. Another argument that would support keeping lotteries is that, other than gambling addicts, people freely choose to buy lottery tickets. This is true, however, there are misleading advertisements that may cause people to buy tickets under false pretenses.
In the poem, The Friendship Only Lasted A Few Seconds written by Lily Lee Adams, the overall tone is consistently solemn. The narrator conveys her tone about war through her relationship with the soldier when she states, “After all the friendship only lasted a few seconds” (Lines 30-31, Adams). This demonstrates the limited time the speaker has to encounter the moribund soldier. This line makes light of the speaker's tone as gloomy due to the fact that she has nearly acquainted this soldier, yet he is at death's doorstep. Another example is when the speaker exclaims, “I felt I was in second place” (Lines 14-15, Adams). The nurse feels like a replacement for Mary, and cannot help but feel downhearted that the actually person cannot be there
Greek mythology is thought to be very fascinating to many people; I personally wanted to learn more about it and the Hellenistic period. A new cultural age was led by Alexander the Great when he took over Egypt and the Near East, historians refer to this period as Hellenistic.
Introducing the option of Nevada having a lottery has been enticing for many. Although lotteries might provide extra revenue for school, when one takes a deeper look into the facts, everyone loses.
The time was around 10:30 and my eyelids felt as heavy as a brick to keep open. I was just about to shut everything down for the night, when the loud sound of a snapchat notification startled me awake. I looked at the blaring screen of my phone in the dark, to see it was from my friend Jordan. Flirting with each other was our thing, but nothing more. At the end of everything, he's a junior and I'm a freshman, he still wants me to grow up a little bit. I opened up
I can understand why I found it cool, many people did, and still do. There’s some kind of dangerous and risky appeal to it. But, it’s place on my personal pedestals has definitely been replaced by other blooming trends and things I consider cool. There is no strong force still drawing me to smoking cigarettes and i’m thankful for that. Thankful that I listened to my parents and never smoked, and thankful that I wasn’t like some of those children from my hometown in India that actually got addicted. Before, I was drawn to smoking because it was strange and mysterious, yet it had some kind of elegance. Now that i’m more capable of understanding this thing and its side effects, therefore I feel no need to try it. More so, over the years it lost it’s power over me because as multitudes of facts and reports of its negative side effects were released and it became less idolized since more people realized how physically dangerous it
...to save the mother's life. "The court ruled that the states were forbidden from outlawing or regulating any aspect of abortion performed during the trimester of pregnancy". When Roe was decided, most states restricted the practice of abortion. These restictions were challenged amid the sexual revolution in the 1960's.
My best friend used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis. Over time, he developed many obvious bad habits and changed his life style tremendously. He started getting lazy with schoolwork, and did not show much interest in anything at all. His parents noticed all these side effects that had been occurring but were unaware that their son smoked marijuana. After the grades fell so much, they decided to take him to get checked out because they were afraid he had developed some sort of ADD. They come to find out that because of him smoking so much marijuana it had led to brain problems, memory problems and affected his thinking skills. He was unable to stay concentrated on something and constantly was out of breath when any physical activity took place. My friend finally quit smoking marijuana because he saw what it was doing to his life. Many teens try marijuana not knowing all the side effects that come with this drug. This drug has many misconceptions from when it is really legal to what marijuana will actually do to your body. People think that marijuana is the most harmless drug because one never hears of people dying from it or getting deathly ill. This is false because marijuana does things to the body that can not be seen from the outside. The majority of the damage is in the brain and lungs which can get extremely dangerous. All the bad side effects from this drug will really harm people’s bodies and ruin their futures and lives.
Starting high school is tough for some people. Moving to a new city is also tough for some people. Or me I had to deal with both. I can remember my very first day of high school, I was so nervous. I didn’t make any friends over the summer so I didn’t talk to anyone. I was pushed out of my comfort zone to talk to people and make new friends. A few months into school I received my first interim. It wasn't the greatest but , I blamed it on my transition to high school and promised that
and I vowed to myself that smoking would never become a part of my life. Not only was I wrong, I had no idea what was in store for me. As the years went by, my sister's smoking habit no longer came as a shock to me, but the addiction is still crude. As I turned 15, I started to notice that one of my good friends had
You know, it is really strange how quickly time passes, after spending my whole childhood wishing I was an adult, now here we are and it's a little hard to grasp. It feels like just yesterday I was standing here in the same position at eighth grade graduation. Ahh, middle school, such a joyous time for all of us, free of maturity and not a care in the world. The biggest decisions I ever had to make then was deciding which group to stand with at passing time and choosing which shirt from my extensive collection of Stussy and No Feat apparel to wear. We were all naive to the danger that lurked just around the corner. We were unaware that the carefree world we lived in was about to come crashing to the ground in a blazing inferno of real school work and responsibility ... otherwise known as high school.
