Drugs
An issue of personal, local, and national concern that I would like to focus in this essay is drugs. There are many reasons why I find drugs to be an issue of great importance to me.
First, drugs is a personal issue to me. For most of my life, I have been living in places where drugs have surrounded me. For the past ten years, I have been living in the Duncan Projects in Jersey City, where the temptation of selling, buying, or even using drugs seems to be growing every day. Every day I see older people and even young kids engaging in the act of buying, selling, and using drugs. I ask myself why do people get involved in drugs; is it because of a financial need? Sometimes people believe that having a lot of money makes them a success, but they are wrong. People also be...
Burmese pythons (Python molurus) are popular pets in the United States because of their attractive color pattern, reputed docility, and the allure, for some, of owning a giant snake. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, approximately 99,000 Burmese pythons were imported to the United States between 1996 and 2006, compared to only 17,000 between 1970 and 1995. The species is classified by the World Conservation Union as “near threatened” in its native range in Southeast Asia due to exportation for the pet trade and hunting for skins. Thousands of pythons are also captive bred each year in the U.S. for sale as pets. An inexperienced snake keeper who takes home a 20-inch hatchling is, within a year, responsible for a brawny eight-foot predator. Unable to
The invasive species, the Burmese Python has done irreparable damage to the Everglades National Park in Florida. A steady decline in mammals has been observed since the introduction of Burmese pythons occurred. Burmese pythons were first introduced into the United States as part of the pet trade which then led to the escape or intentional release out into the wild. The first notation of these species arriving was in the year 2000. However, within just eleven years this invasive species had done such a large amount of damage to Florida’s Ecosystem that many species had gone almost completely extinct.
How are Burmese pythons get here? Many people believe that they were brought from other countries like Southeast Asia and were kept as pets when brought to the U.S. When the pythons became too big for the owner to handle they would release them into the wild. Not only that, but the pythons were also released from animal warehouses in Miami, Florida, when a devastating hurricane hit. Many of the shipments that are sent into Miami with wildlife are sent to such animal warehouses. 12,000 shipments of wildlife are sent to Miami every year. Including in the last four years alone 140,000 wild caught pythons were shipped to these wildlife facilities for studies. After the hurricane hit the warehouse, the pythons slithered their way to the Everglades where a variety of food could be obtained and where hiding places could ...
Drug use has been an ongoing problem in our country for decades. The use of drugs has been the topic of many political controversies throughout many years. There has been arguments that are for legalizing drugs and the benefits associated with legalization. Also, there are some who are opposed to legalizing drugs and fear that it will create more problems than solve them. Conservatives and liberals often have different opinions for controversial topics such as “the war on drugs,” but it is necessary to analyze both sides in order to gain a full understanding of their beliefs and to decide in a change in policy is in order.
The war on drugs in our culture is a continuous action that is swiftly lessening our society. This has been going on for roughly 10-15 years and has yet to slow down in any way. Drugs continue to be a problem for the obvious reason that certain people abuse them in a way that can lead to ultimate harm on such a person. These drugs do not just consist of street drugs (marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy), but prescription medications as well. Although there are some instances where drugs are being used by subjects excessively, there has been medical research to prove that some of these drugs have made a successful impact on certain disorders and diseases.
We claim that we need to "set a good example," but the government's every effort to impress fear upon our youth, to stigmatize drugs and drug users, has failed to have any effect.... ... middle of paper ... ... Ideally, I would not have to persuade my readers with facts.
Over the sequence of the industrial revolution, America was swept with vehement new inventions and ideas. In 1793, inventor Eli Whitney successfully created a cotton gin that separated seeds from fibers, accelerating the production of raw cotton. This invention resulted in cotton becoming America’s number one leading export by the mid 19th century. ("Cotton Gin and Eli Whitney") Around the climax of the revolution, Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanization of rubber. By doing so, Goodyear successfully brought “rubber fever” back to America. ("The Charles Goodyear Story") In the year of 1913, the industrial revolution made a final mark in the united states with Ford’s mass production of the Model T Car. This was the last innovation of the american industrial revolution, after which began the takeover of white collar careers. (Morris)
I have lived in the same trailer park my whole life. As a result, I have had to deal with people treating me differently after they find out where I live. Many people jump to the conclusion that I am poor. Although at times, money has been tight I would never classify myself as poor. My family has always been able to provide for me. Other people assume that my family must be living off of welfare. I can also say that my family has never received welfare. Despite the fact that some people match those stereotypes, everybody should not be lumped together with them. I have met multiple people who also live in trailer parks, and most of them do not fall into the stereotypical categories associated with them. People should not be judged based on where they live.
Burmese pythons are causing large problems in Florida. In the Everglades National Park, it is hard to spot any small or large animals, because the burmese pythons are hunting them. Which is concerning to animal population.
By the 1750's, the industrial Revolution had begun. At first, inventions were strictly limited to cotton weaving. Inventions such as the spinning jenny and the water-powered frame, both of which provided spinning yarn faster, the spinning mule, the power loom and the cotton gin, all helped the manufacture of cotton goods by speeding up the process. Mass production had begun, along with capitalism. Capitalist, people who have their own materials, money and space, bought many machines and stored them in a factory, where hired people worked the whole day manufacturing goods. The factory system had replaced the cottage industry. Mass production made usually expensive items, such as shoes, less expensive and easily affordable by lower class and less wealthy people.
Some people are likely to generalize about the causes of drug related crimes and say that they are simply related to people who do not do any good for our society. However, in certain instances drugs can be used as a source of income for people and they commit crimes in order to facilitate that goal (Nurco, 1998). These people have no way out of their drug lives and therefore may not necessarily choose this life style but are brought up into it.
A major research concern for behavioral psychologists and sociologists today circles an integral part of the American family routine and life. Something that has become so inset into homes that it would be rare to find one without it. Research has shown a hidden danger lurking in our homes, and the origin may surprise you. Television has been around since the early 1950’s but behaviorists have just recently begun to start studying the effects these machines may have on children, social interaction and families. Research has begun to show negative consequences of television on children’s development and socialization proving that it does reduce and affect social interaction.
Most famously recognized as a time of great technological innovation, the Industrial Revolution gave birth too two of the most transforming technologies, which came to spur the revolution on; cotton spinning and steam power. The two technologies are closely linked, the improved Steam Engine, invented by James Watt and patented in 1755, was originally used ...

The effect of television is known to direct children in a negative way, such as brain development, behaviour, and their health. When someone thinks of television, they think of it as a good thing. Well that is not the case; there are not only positive aspects of watching television, but also many negative ones. But some examples of negative effects of television would be exposing children to things like drugs, alcohol, and violence that parents do not want their kids involved in at any point in their life. However, parents and guardians do not want their children to be influenced by these things, as they are very harmful and dangerous, and can cause serious concerns of their child’s development. Television is usually put on as a distraction,
