Hello, today I would like to start off by telling you a story. Three years ago on a trip coming back from Hot Springs, my friend and I were in a car accident. My friend had dozed off, and when I looked up to see what was going on we were in the other lane. We swerved out of the way but still hit the vehicle in front of us. I sustained a broken right leg and two dislocated fingers. My friend and the other driver sustained only minor injuries. I now have a titanium rod in my leg and can’t run long distances. This is something that happens too often. How often have you gotten off work after going to school and taking care of all the daily things that are necessary and you were exhausted? Two or three times a week, maybe more? All of us have things that make us tired. Drowsy driving is dangerous, but it is something preventable. Today, I would like to convince you to not drive while drowsy by stating the problems/dangers of driving while …show more content…
drowsy, listing possible solutions to combat the problems, and showing you positive ways to get involved in preventing drowsy driving. To start with, I will address the hazards involved with tired driving. It not only affects you but it also could hurt others around you. Motor vehicle accidents involving tired driving can cause property damage and possible financial trouble. Driving while sleepy causes the person to have decreased reaction times, decreases attention to the road and makes them less likely to make good decisions. As stated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “there could be as many as 1.2 million crashes, 8,000 lives lost, and 500,000 injuries due to drowsy driving each year.” The most common reason for the crashes is that individuals are too tired to drive safely and won’t get a ride instead of driving. Most of the crashes occur between midnight and four a.m., or in the late afternoon which is the time that most people would naturally sleep. The dangers of drowsy driving are many but preventable. Next, I will talk about strategies to reduce the issues associated with drowsy driving.
The warning signs of drowsy driving are a way to understand and prevent it. The signs are: Yawning or blinking, hitting the rumble strip on the side of the road, not being able to remember the last few hours, or even missing your exit. If you experience any of these signs, stop and rest or change drivers. Another good strategy to avoid getting sleepy is to get at least 7 to 8 hours sleep every night. If you are going on a long trip sleep well the night before. If you use medications that drowsiness is a side effect of use public transportation or get a ride from friends or family instead. You should try stopping and walking around or drinking a cup of coffee as this can stop drowsiness for a short time. You should have a buddy to talk to and to be able to switch out with while driving. Also, be aware of how much quality sleep that you and your family receive. The best way to avoid driving sleepy is to get enough sleep and be vigilant while
driving. Finally, I will talk about ways to get involved with preventing drowsy driving in your community. The National Sleep Foundation has declared the first week in November as Drowsy Driving Prevention week. This is to bring awareness to the problem of drowsy driving and possibly save lives. Educate your family and friends about the dangers of drowsy driving. Give them helpful hints to help them when they are driving. Take a personal pledge against driving drowsy and ask you family to take the pledge. Make sure that you and your family always call home when they arrive safely at their destination. The National Sleep Foundation has developed a kit to help schools, individuals, and businesses address this problem. You can contact them at the National Sleep Foundation website to obtain the kit. The goal of preventing drowsy driving is any easy one with practice and forethought. In summary, I have talked about my accident involving drowsy driving and have shown how anyone could have it happen to them. I have shown you the hazards of drowsy driving, given you possible solution to the problems, and illustrated good ways to get involved with preventing drowsy driving. I hope that this information has given you pause to think about the implications of drowsy driving and help to prevent you or one of your loved ones from being involved in a related accident.
We understand the dangers of driving under the influence, texting while driving and distracted driving; however, drowsy driving continues to be a problem on our roads. Needs assessment Between 1998 and 2008, 16.5% of fatal car accidents in the US involved a drowsy driver, and 13% of non-fatal accidents where at least one person was admitted to the hospital involved a drowsy driver (Tefft, 2012).... ... middle of paper ... ... Sleepiness, Driving, and Motor Vehicle Crashes.
There are approximately 5,400 deaths per year that are linked to distracted driving, and thousands more were injured. (U.S. Department of Labor). Those fatalities are our neighbors, close friends, and even family. How can we prevent this from being so prominent? How can we make the roads a safe place to be again? These questions have many different answers, but many prove to be un-effective. I believe that the best and only way to resolve this issue is to implement tougher laws on cell-phone use in vehicles, and educate our youth to the best of our abilities on the dangers of distracted driving.
Each year numerous lives are lost due to careless and irrational driving. The disregard for safe driving has been a predicament to Queensland for years. For many years? police have relied heavily on speed cameras, breathe testing and heavy fines as a deterrent against unlawful drivers. Over the years fatality rates have increased, so Queensland Transport has composed a series of safe driving campaigns. On many occasions the transport department informs and advises the public about the importance of responsible driving. They propagate safe driving through the various channels of the media. Their safe driving campaign is now using effective propaganda aimed directly at speeding; drink driving and tired and reckless driving
Drunk Driving is defined as: Operating a motor vehicle while one 's blood alcohol content is above the legal limit set by statute, which supposedly is the level at which a person cannot drive safely. State statutes define the legal limit to be between .08 and .10 depending on what state you’re in. Every 51 minutes in America, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash(MADD). That equates to 27 people every day. Which comes to a total of at least 9,855 deaths in a year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32% of fatal car crashes involve an intoxicated driver or pedestrian (MADD). As of right now, in society the total number of drunk driving accidents is slowly but surely increasing and if nothing is done about it, it’ll result in a tragic amount of deaths and injuries. Drunk drivers are extremely dangerous not just to oneself, but to society as well. That is why one serious solution to this societal epidemic is to create a portion of the driving test where drivers will be required to be at least ten beers deep and while drunk they must drive through a set of
The combination of driving an automobile after drinking a significant amount of alcohol has been recognized as a serious problem since the motor car was invented in the 1880s. By 1910, the law in the United States had already codified drunk driving as a misdemeanor offence. Prohibitionists used the danger created by mixing alcohol and driving as a key point in their argument in favor of the eighteenth amendment, as a result of which the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol was banned between 1920 and 1933. Apparently lessons were not learned and many decades later drunk driving has been called one of the most serious problems confronting America today” (Kinkade). This should not be a problem for any country as individuals should be able to control their drinking behavior.
Evidence for this argument can be seen in the research performed by Williamson & Feyer (2000), which study the relative impairment of sleep deprivation in cognitive and motor performance. They found that fatigue caused by sleep deprivation plays an important role when driving. In fact, it can even compromise the accuracy and safety needed in the road. Furthermore, Rogé, Basheer, Pébayle, Hannachi & Muzet (2003) advocate that sleep deprivation can increase the levels of drowsiness and fatigue, which can cause deficiency when detecting signals or responding to stimulus in a driving simulator. Sleep is an important part of human health, which can help improve our ability to perform tasks. It can also be detrimental to both body and mind. It cannot only cause damage to us but to others. Therefore the effects of sleep play an important role when realizing to what extent it can damage performance and become a risk to
Whether it is a text massage from love one or a bite of a sandwich, it is not so important than a human life. Distracted driving is an epidemic, so more tough laws should be implemented. The law for distracted driving should be tough just like a driving under influence. Distracting driving is a killer on the road, it should be banned because, it is the number one killer of the U.S. teenager in the road, not only the teenager in the road, but also cause a collision which is often fatal, and some incident were driver or one who involve on an accident became disable. Distraction is an involvement of driver where his or hers eye or mind are engage and performing on other things rather than driving, such as while talking on
Driving. While I haven’t had the greatest experiences with driving related problems; I’ve run into some pretty funny ones. When I was about four years old my family was over at my grandpa’s putting in a well for him. I of course was sitting in the unattended van on the top of the hill in the back seat. While many people would think that it was completely safe and there’s nothing to worry about they are wrong. You see I was a clever little toddler and could at that time unbuckle herself and climb over the center console right into the front seat. Also being the genius child that I was I managed to switch the car from park to neutral and begin to roll down the hill. Now I don 't remember my mom and the other adults running towards the van to
Even though there is an age requirement, alcohol should be banned because it leads to drunk driving and kills. Here in the state of Missouri, statistics show that in 2011, 9,878 people died in drunk driving crashes. One crash every 53 minutes. There are two types of drunk driving offenses. One is DWI, which is driving while intoxicated. The other is the DUI, driving under the influence, which would be of alcohol or other drugs. They both follow the same rules and laws.
Driving under the influence is one of the most common and dangerous situations in which anyone can be or be placed. Drinking and driving is a serious offence that can cause someone to be physically harm or even killed. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but you are also risking the lives of passengers in the car as well as any other car and occupants sharing the road with you. Many people believe that increasing fines for drunk driving offenders will play a compelling role in cutting down the occurrences of driving under the influence. However, while harsher DUI laws will look effective on paper, they will not make a significant step in the fight against drunk driving. Although there is a law enforced for drinking and driving in the
For many years, drunk driving casualties have been viewed differently. Many believe that drunk driving laws are strict while others believe that it is too lenient. In this generations, where alcohol is cheap and very accessible many tends to abuse it. This people who abuse alcohol is known as drunk drivers because after taking three or four drinks they still believe that they are not drunk and goes back to the wheel of their vehicle without thinking of what will happen next. This drunk drivers are willing to risk their lives and the lives of others because they are ashamed or too big to call a family member or a designated drivers to take them home. If they are lucky and did not die on their way home. Then they create this dangerous cycle of
Drowsy drivers who feel like they’re able to drive should re-consider their judgment. Sometimes people feel like they’re able to drive under sleepy conditions but honestly they’re putting themselves and others on the road around them in serious danger. Drivers can prevent drowsiness by taking naps or drinking some kind of caffeine drinks. This can help promote awareness and can improve the safety of the driver driving and also other drivers on the road surrounding the driver.
Reasons for drinking is different for everyone and everyone does it whether they 're legal or not, but as soon as you step behind that wheel after a few drinks you 're signing your death certificate, or worse, someone else’s. Alcohol-related traffic deaths in the US were 12,998 in 2007. This is more than three times as many American soldiers who died in combat in the first six years of the Iraq war-according to drugfreeworld.com. Forget for a minute the buzz and relaxed sensation you get by drinking and think about a bloody crash site filled with dead bodies, think about taking someones child away from their parents or your best friends body lying bloody on the road. Buzzed driving gets laughed off because people don 't believe its drunk driving,
Lack of sleep may cause an accident. As you get drowsy, your reaction becomes slow as much as driving drunk.
The main distraction of driving is cell phones. Most adults and teens will engage in texting and driving. Due to the major issue of texting and driving many campaigns have been launched, one being launched by AT&T “when it comes to texting and driving, it can wait.” This campaign has many drivers take the pledge to no longer use their phone when driving, there is an available app that will send out automatic messages to anybody that sends a while the individual is driving. When someone is driving at the rate of 55 miles per hour for only 4.6 seconds, it will equal the length of a football field, 100 yards. So, even stopping full vision from the road for a few seconds will still risk serious danger. Another cause of distracted driving is being exhausted or tired, doing so will cause a much slower reaction time. The slower reaction time causes many of the accidents that happen when people are tired. Another possibility is falling asleep behind the wheel even for a few seconds you could drift, or swerv into another lane and hit another car causing a major or fatal car accident. When taking driving classes, the students within the class will hear the saying “stay alert, stay alive.” The final major distraction of driving is eating and drinking. One of the problems of eating and drinking while driving is that it causes both a visual and manual distraction. When removing your eyes from the road many dangers will be
