How would you feel if you got to sit and relax in your car while you were going somewhere but not actually having to drive? Well thanks to the advanced technology driverless cars are already in the making. People may think it is a good idea for the United States to move toward a society with driverless cars but it is not because the cars would have safety issues, the cars wouldn’t be able to go very far without help from humans and the car will be expensive.

Who fault is it when a driverless car gets into an accident? Google is the primary car and vehicle creators, and the government’s actions both in the U.S. and overseas are spending nearly billions of dollars to care the growth of the vehicle technology with the possible to make highway travel way more harmless than it is nowadays. How does someone apportion blame between a vehicle’s mechanical systems and an actual human driver? Is it the software the blame for the accident or was it the hardware? These sorts of problems have led to proposals that liability will be a problem when these driverless cars are released to the public.
Driveless cars, are they the future or are they going to be an idea that never succeeds? It is something that everyone is wanting to know and see if it will actually work out. It's 2017 so what more can we ask for than cars that drive themselves? It is a great idea and if it actually works out as planned then it will definitely be one for the books. Motor accidents are one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the United States. In the year 2000 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that around 41,000 people were killed in traffic accidents within the United States. This mortality rate has since dropped 25% from 2000 to 2009 (Rockett et al., 2012). There are many reasons for motor vehicle injuries, ranging from lack of seat belt use, elderly drivers, alcohol and young children being improperly secured. All of these things factor into motor injuries differently and must be addressed as a separate problem. Highway safety is an important issue in public health and many things have already been implemented to help reduce accidents and injuries. Actions like mandatory seat use, shatter resistant windshields, speed limits, and child restraints.

Also those surveyed people are in conflict with themselves, trying to decide what outcome could be better. Inventors hope to help people with autonomous cars because “autonomous cars can do things that human drivers can’t” (qtd. in “Making Robot Cars More Human). One of the advantages that driverless cars have is that “They can see through fog or other inclement weather, and sense a stalled car or other hazard ahead and take appropriate action” (qtd. in “Making Robot Cars More Human). Harsh weather conditions make it difficult and dangerous for people to drive, however, the car’s ability to drive through inclement weather “frees the user’s time, creates opportunities for individuals with less mobility, and increases overall road safety” (Bose 1326). Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers. Like any groundbreaking technology, there is a fear of the unforeseen problems. It was confirmed in May, that a Tesla Model S crashed into a passing truck, killing the Model S passenger. Tesla’s Model S was operating completely on autopilot. This incident was the first fatal crash involving autonomous driving technology. This incident enlightened policymakers around the world of the downside of autonomous driving.
